Review Port vs Brisbane QF @ The Gabba - It's OK Guys, Finals are a Bit Scary

Mission accomplished - home prelim embarrassment avoided. Hinkley is now bigger than the Club, and protecting him is the most important outcome. The media lap that up, and we've just signed record numbers of happy clappers.

This Club is completely unrecognisable. I felt more positive about the future in 2012 than I do now.

Duursma will never be more than a c-grade battler. Fumbly, poorly skilled, zero hurt factor.

Finlayson is only useful if the ball is delivered perfdctly to him on a lead. If it isn’t he cant mark. Under pressure he cant mark. In packs he cant mark. Under percieved pressure, nope. Someone looks at him? Cant mark. He isnt a finals footballer.

Just another embarrassing finals loss. Limp, poor, zero resilience
Re X, sadly Portia was right. I do wish you and she still did those pods. That one was a classic.

Condolences. I was flicking through your general AFL thread the other night and after reading such comments as "these 2 are trash" "Pies are really gettable" "what a shocking game" "wouldn't even know this was a final, I tuned in last night expecting an absolute Port Adelaide master-class. I must add I did the same thing when Collingwood played you at your ground toward the end of the home and away season and was left scratching my head.. last night I saw a team that finished top 4 lose by 50 points and I find myself scratching my head again

Another glaring issue is having the worst AFL leadership group in the AFL
Jonas can’t make the side
Wines dreadful year
DBJ shouldn’t be in the side
Compare their performances to Cripps Moore Gawn Greene and even Jack Steele over the weekend it’s bloody embarrassing.

Ken will double down on Wines again next season and we can add that to his long list of terrible decisions.

I bet you read pr0n mags just for the interviews right ? 🤣

Just makes the point again that it was so dumb to extend Hinkley’s contract before the finals. Just wait until the finals were over. Extend his contract if we make the GF, anything less appoint Carr.

And Hinkley couldn’t use the threat that he’ll walk to another club. No one wanted him

Is Carr really the answer? Why do we keep assuming this? In two showdowns, a QF and a couple of other big losses, he has presided over a very capable midfield that has been soundly beaten. He failed to select/develop a second ruckman early enough this year, investing wasted games in Teakle as his preferred option when Lycett was dropped. He hasn’t got the wings right at any stage. He couldn’t find a way to get games into Jackson when his form was running hot. I don’t think Carr’s the God of coaching that everyone assumes he is. He might be an upgrade by far on Hinkley, but we have to look properly for the best candidate when the time finally comes to get a new coach.

meh, no one has won at the GABBA all year. A bit surprised we lost by as much as we did but not converting set shots has killed sides all year.

At no stage did we even try and control the ball, every time we took an intercept mark we kicked it down the line to literally no one.

I know it was unlucky regarding the subs situation but to me it screams how inept the coaches are.

We are only down 10 points at that point and kicked the most recent goal?

How the * are you panicking and reactionary already? No wonder the players ******* piss their pants every single final.

Who the * activates a tactical sub before the 4th quarter too?
Craig McCrae put Ginnivan on approaching time on in the 4th. Hinkley is the dumbest person on earth.

None of those comments were wrong, thats the thing. This season is wide open and nobody is unbeatable in the 8.

What you've clearly missed is that nobody has faith in a Hinkley coached side to get it done either.

Your lot quite likely will get it done, but its not because they are a dominant force. Its because they are well coached and have heart.

I watched the game at a pub in Neutral Bay, with the sound off. Probably helped me get less worked up.

Anyway, some observations.

Brisbane are a better team than us, and haven’t lost at home this year. So everything had to go right, with everyone pulling their weight. That obviously didn’t happen.

Though the Lions dominated the I50s in the first quarter, we had the better chances. Most of the misses were unforgivable as none were on particularly tight angles and only McEntee’s outside 50. It was the difference between a good start and playing from behind all night.

Marshall’s misses were so bad my son asked me how someone who kicked so poorly could play at this level. I explained he was once our most reliable kick for goal, but it was a hard sell!

Conversely, 19.9 was Brisbane’s most accurate game of the year by my calculations and they could barely miss, even or especially from the boundary.

I’d love to see the XG for both teams as I will bet it was a lot closer than the final result.

Though our pressure was good for most of the night, I thought our tackling was diabolical at times. Time and time again a Lions player would break a weak tackle or grab, inevitably leading to a scoring opportunity.

For the most part Brisbane ran harder and in greater numbers. There was always an outlet kick or handball on and we struggled to trap the ball I50. They also dominated in the air around the wings as we were trying to transition out of defence.

This is where we really missed Dixon as Lycett is a poor contested mark and neither Marshall or Finlayson are a great pack mark either.

I also thought we were unusually fumbly. I don’t want to pick on SPP as he always gives his all. But there were a few times when cleaner hands would have stopped the ball falling over the line and given us a chance to put more pressure on their defence.

Speaking of defence, it has been a weak spot all season so we were the last team who could afford to lose two important players within a few minutes in the third quarter.

We were (incredibly) in the game until that point but with DBJ also off, there was nothing left in the cupboard.

To me the whole game just affirmed how many holes there still are on our list and that the number of close and lucky wins this season flattered us.

GWS will be very tough. They are a more well rounded team and almost everyone is fit.

I expect to win at home but am also preparing myself for going out in straight sets.

Good post PB, but I'm assuming `dropped their guts' must have a different meaning now, as back in the dim darks it was used as a reference to a fart that could clear a room!
Definitely that but the main crux of the metaphor was that 5 to 10 minutes before half time, the willpower to play to win the game was gone.

Once you don't have the willpower to win, the game is over and the other team runs over the top of you.

But yeah, no doubt, the team left a malodorous smell up at the Gabba.

Really good post. Agreed with all of it.

Perhaps you should be more worried about playing Brisbane in the Grand Final than taking cheap shots at us? That is assuming you make it. Pies are no certainties and are gettable if not by us maybe by Brisbane.
