Review Port vs Brisbane QF @ The Gabba - It's OK Guys, Finals are a Bit Scary

I thought Lycett was OK. Battled hard in the ruck. Doesn’t offer much anymore at ground level though. Used to bob up with a goal or 2 here and there. Don’t think he’s kicked a goal this year at all.
Yeah Lycett was fine. Actually probably better than fine. He did his job. McInerney wasn't a factor.

Same shit different year

Blown off the park in a big final

It’s the coaches, it’s the players, it’s lost management. Our defence is a joke and it’s not premiership quality, that’s on Cripps.

Wines lol what a joke of a player. How many times have him, Boak and Lynette failed to deliver in a final.

I actually don’t care about next week whatsoever

There's no use talking about specifics. Everyone is talking about personnel and criticising individuals when it's obvious that isn't the problem. We have people saying Wines can't play when he literally broke the record for most Brownlow votes of all time less than 2 years ago. We have people saying Marshall can't kick when he couldn't miss from anywhere as recently as last year. The problem is not individuals. The problem is coaching and culture.

We have no discernible system other than hoping the midfield dominates and trying to lock the ball in our half. We can't control the tempo of a game in any other way. A coach's job is to bring a group of individuals together to be collectively stronger as a team, minimising its weaknesses and maximising its strengths. It's obvious this is not happening.

Our culture is the worst part though. We accept mediocrity so that is what we get. The continued extension of Hinkley is the obvious example but it's a broader narrative than that. The little battler club mentality. The constant loser talk from everyone at all levels of the club. It all comes out in these big occasions when we go to water. Strong clubs with good cultures rise to the occasion in these games and actually perform at a higher level than normal. We play meek and scared and that's because we are a meek and scared club. We see ourselves as a challenger brand and that's the way we play. Oh we'll have a shot at the big boys but it's a bit too much to expect us to win, don't you think? There's no hard or ruthless edge, no determination or resolve. It's just going through the motions and oh well, always next year.

There's a very good reason the more astute people on this forum were unfazed when we won 13 in a row despite everyone else talking about grand finals. The evidence suggests that we don't have what it takes to win finals and perform at the business end of the season against the good teams when the stakes are high. That evidence only grew stronger last night.

When the senior coach comes out pre-match and publicly states "finals are scary", anyone who thinks that sort of loser talk doesn't trickle down into the mindset of the players is kidding themselves. The players were given an out clause, and mentally they took it. Simple.

The way we visibly lost all momentum when Finlayson went into the ruck was stark. In fact, the two goals they kicked from centre clearance in a minute during the third quarter that blew the margin out from 2 to 4 goals was the decisive moment in what had otherwise been a scrappy game that we were doing enough to give ourselves a silly chance in.

We had no run and carry from our backs.

I lost count of the number of times we paused/stopped at HB. Is it a plan to tone down the 'tempo' or a lack of options

offered by those up field? Either way it's a coaching issue. Are we scared the oppo will get a 'run on' and by logic a

concession we can't go with 'em? IF that's the case what a damning indictment on our gameplan... well clearly NOT.

We've had the same coach for 11yrs and just extended for another 2 which tells everybody "nah nothing to see here".

Those of us on here who've had enough are labelled "whingers, not true supporters blah blah. Seriously it's as tho' people think

such whingers do so by choice. What effing universe do you live in. Posters like me, paid up members with thousands

of thought bubbles on here being reduced to now casual observers who no longer get 'pissed off'. Towards the end last night

I said to myself "carn Port we can still squeeze in a 10 goal loss here".

See you all at the footy next week. You'll be on the telly and i'll be on the sofa watching with arms folded and a thousand yard stare.

I don’t think it’s out of line to say Jeremy Finlayson has been a disgrace to the jumper the last couple of months. He’s not just out of form, he shows utter contempt for the jumper every second that he’s out there.

I smell a welch
PAFC66 Mr Experience pretty
I didn’t rate Brisbanes form going into finals as much as everyone else and didn’t think we would be that much of a choking hazard in a QF with a second chance.

Our choking has been more an issue in knockout finals so I thought we were a good chance to play without those mental demons tonight but I was wrong.

Apologies for trying to be positive. Congrats on being right, so happy for you.

for me it’s not about revelling in being right it’s sad. Any optimism was gone long ago

I was furious when I heard he said that. They lost it from that comment alone. The opposition had Port from the get go.

Ken is a liability talking to the media. He needs to STFU.

if we thought cameron getting us was bad just wait and see what daniels and bedford have instore for us next week

Mids are still too young and slight. Immensely talented but that was a hard inside midfield slog in which our “bull” turned into jane.
We had no run and carry from our backs.

Houston, Burton, Farrell and Williams had very little penetration going into the F50.

Those backs can get to 600 metres and sometimes 700 metres gained were around 300 metres or so.

Bergman at 400.
Farrell at 316.
Houston at 286,
Burton at 259.
Lachie Jones at 196.
Williams at 132.
McKenzie at 117.

I think it is the most damning stat apart from the scoreboard.

And thats when you have to credit Brisbanes half forwards. R1 Burton and Byrne Jones (before he became a forward) came off the back flanks and did what they want amassing 24 and 27 possessions between them in that game

Noticed Fletcher and Cameron come off the arc a few times to impact centre bounces which worked and those who didnt pressure stuck tight to their opponents which is a reason farrell and houston weren’t able to free wheel and deal like they used to.

Quite funny Brisbane had the same amount of time +/- a day or so since their last round and they took time into planning to get under butters’ skin, get daniher to research and study aliirs patterns one on one and construct forward entries to create space, dominate midfield stoppages for our so called generational midfield

meanwhile we spent 3 hours watching a film about nazis and thought it was a good marketing idea to go with that when we could of used that time more wisely, also what happened to the a avalanche

We lost because we missed set shots according to Kane. Move on y'all. Nothing else could be done
I turned it on to hear what shitty excuse he gave, and it was even more stupid than I thought it would be. Also pointed out the list deficiencies, setting himself up for a "but what more could Hinkley do he's got a shit list and he's only had 11 years to fix it guys"

Apart from a couple of players - we do not look like a finals team. Don’t deserve to be there.

And Ken continually playing injured players to deflect his own incompetence. Marshall shouldn’t have played last night but now everyone will be talking about Marshall’s game rather than Kens poor player management and game plan.

If only we had medical and fitness staff who could stand up for their players

I turned off at quarter time as I was getting too angry.
Amazing how much less angst I have this morning.
I saw Marshall’s shocking goal kicking in the first and thought, oh this will be not be our night.
Didn’t realise we lost 2 defenders late in the game. Who were they?
Anyway, we continue to be deficient in many areas it seems.

Spent most of the first 3 quarters down by 10-20 points when really should have been up by 10-20 points on xScore. And even at the end should of only lost by about 20 instead of 50.

Goal accuracy isn't everything but if you miss the amount of gettable shots that we miss it gets to the point where the level will drop off. If we had kicked the shots we should have I doubt we lost by the amount we did.

What is that flog kingy going on about saying we had a “horror” week? We were woeful last night but what happened during the week that was bad that he would even know about?

To be fair to our undersized defence the inside 50 count was ridiculous in the first half and that is down to the lazy forward line and midfielders up the ground. The defence was under the pump big time.

Thought in some ways it looked similar to how we lost to Centrals in the SANFL the week before. Very easy transition in both games and terrible team and one-on-one defence, leading to easy goals. Which isn't really surprising but does give some insight into the holes in our football program
