Have been too hung over today to post before this.

What an awesome victory, made even sweeter by the fact that I watching it at a party with Adelaide fans. We had a drinking game where if Adelaide scored a goal I had to scull a drink. If Essendon scored a goal they had to.

.

Teams should really thank us for getting on the juice, especially North Melbourne it gave them a finals appearance.

Considering their pathetic effort in the final I would think they would be cursing us.

Major focus for me is long bombs in to the forward line - I counted 8 to 10 times when a player about 60 metres from goal kicked it long to a two on two contest - Ideally you want one of these players to lead up to the ball carrier - This gives the ball carrier two options - Hit up the leading target ( do this once or twice and his opponent won't sag off ) or then as a second option you can then kick it long to a true one-on-one contest.

I do prefer that Hurley plays deep forward and Crameri as the high forward - This gives Hurley a better chance to time his leads and also Crameri with more space can double back on his opponent.

You got private health insurance? At least dental?
Copped quite a lot of unprovoked banter throughout the day, mostly lighthearted stuff. A few morons who let their emotions take over and actually were not happy to even see us in their state still. Could've easily been violence if we weren't so laid back.

All in all a great weekend. Let's keep this going for more than 9 weeks this year.

Pretty much the same for me. Got to the airport to head home about 9 last night and thought I'd put on my Essendon jumper. Good thing there was another bloke who was wearing his so the hate was divided, haha.

Wore my essendon jacket out last night, general consensus is people feel sorry for us for the situation we are in.

I prefer it when people hate us to be honest... Hopefully we can get to 9-1 again, then capitalise on it and the hate will start to come back...

For all our general dread about playing at Football Park, we've won three of our last four games there now, and the one loss was when we were injury ravaged and by just four points, to a side that ended up five points and some horrific umpiring short of a Grand Final last year.

Very pleasing. Now we need to make real inroads on our Perth record (against the Eagles especially) and I'll consider our travel hoodoo well on the way to being laid to waste.

I will get to a few things no one has mentioned yet.

...

2. The small forward position. Looks like we are right on the ball with this in that the AFL will no doubt change the SUB and interchange rules next year and we have gone with having a number of players who can play midfield/forward or back who are also pretty hard at the footy. Last night Howlett stood out but expect to see a lot more of Watson, Goddard, Melksham, Stanton, Dempsey playing forward in the rotations along with the frantic attack on the ball from the likes of Kommer.

I think you're 110% right on this.

It is amazing, with the benefit of hindsight, just how suited to playing as a small forward Howlett is. Not in the fast category he is a Mark/Jason Johnson type explosive athlete who is a tackling machine that is very good in traffic and finishes well. If Howlett wants to be a midfielder he may have done himself a disservice on Friday night because he may be more important to the side if the balance of his games is weighted 60:40 in favour of playing forward.

Having watched the replay there probably isn't that much more to add that hasn't already been said.

Heppell was better than I originally thought he was and certainly one of our best early on (which I think is more important when we struggled as much as we did early).

Pleasingly, Myers was also better than I initially though he was. If he was involved in a passage of play that didn't benefit us I missed it.

I probably also underrated Carlisle's game but I still don't think he did anything worthy of the rave reviews he's been getting. He probably broke even with Walker who, like Hurley, was done few favours by the conditions or his teammates.

I want to see more from Kommer and, in particular, Baguley before being convinced that we don't have better options. Baguley seems physically and mentally off the pace required of a small defender whose game is probably limited to stopping opponents. Last year it could be put down never having experienced the pace before but almost 12 months later he seems to be much the same player (and I don't think that player is more than depth).

When it comes to key defenders, I often compare their performance to that of a wicketkeeper. If you don't notice them, then they are having a good day. Carlisle didn't do anything out of the ordinary, but then again, he doesn't need to. Someone else mentioned in this thread that come the end of the year, once we really know what level Walker is at, only then can we really rate Carlisle's performance. For me, he was very good. Stuck to Walker all night long and at the very least broke even with him.

Two things, that rationale is excellent but to my frustration is inconsistently applied.

The other thing is that Walker's performance was also influenced by the conditions and his team. Carlisle's performance is not going to get any better and it doesn't matter what Walker does for the rest of the season because, performance of his role aside, it is not like there were many genuinely 50/50 battles to be won and, if I'm being harsh Carlisle probably lost the one or two that occurred.

Reading the flight of the ball better and positioning himself better is a win.

Walker is a damn good player. Only goal of his was Carlisles fault.

Has to do with the Media saturation. It is excessive.

Im not in Adelaide, i'm in Melbourne.... And im not surprised that people that live in Adelaide and don't barrack for them hate them more than Essendon, the same as people that live in Perth but don't barrack for the Eagles would hate them more than any other club.... But in melbourne i find that hard to be the case..

i know a few hawk fans that do hate crows more so one is a former s.a person [mentioned in post ] there may not be a huge number of melbournites that hate crows more then you lot but there are some , some have been to games there and encountered the ferals [i know there maybe some good ones but there are quite a few not so good ones] and what they do to people from Victoria, cheersquads from other teams get security or police escorts out of there these days due to what has been done to them in the past that is a fact, was told that by cs members when i was in the cs

all good,,, I just found it strange how people are reacting to Essendon winning a game of footy,,, it's a reaction which i did not expect, I never once felt sorry for carlton when they were crap for 10years, we aren't even crap at the moment yet people seem to be feeling sorry for us...

not feeling sorry just happy as you won , but thats cool i can understand that you feel thats strange i would probably be the same if other way around too :)

How about Goodard, he would float back 30-40m on the back of a ball up, the player who was standing in the area where he was going he would point to them where he wanted them to stand and the player he moved on 2 ocassions ended up with the ball 1 time it was Hooker and 1 time Baguley.
How can you put a value on these sorts of plays.

I have always liked Essendon since the Wanganeen and Greg Anderson connection in the early 90s.

I watched the Adelaide game and felt Essendon has come a long way since last year. Last year, Essendon looked zippy but maybe a little too fast.

In the Adelaide game, Essendon look fast but solid too.

Zippy is entertaining but Solid wins premierships. I know its only round 1 but geez you guys could have a wonderful 2013.

Just some casual thoughts/observations from friday night's game;

Merretts ability to provide a leading target on the flanks was promising and was involved in the chain of a lot of attacking plays.

Blocking at the center bounces/stoppages was impressive, a real team effort. Was great to see the likes of BJ, Stanton and Myers providing blocks on Dangerfield while he was being tagged which allowed Hocking to rove a few taps. Must be a set play for sure.

Same number of scoring shots for both teams despite 14 more inside 50's is concerning. Is that a blight on the defence or the delivery into our fwd line. A lot of just bombing the ball in, i can only remember maybe 3 passes to a leading target inside 50.

When the game was tight and contested, Davey was nowhere to be seen. When it opened up in the 2nd half he was dangerous. Using Davey tactically as a sub coming on midway through the 3rd qtr could be a option for games. Gives a chance to the likes of NOB or Kav who seem better suited to that type of contested football seen during the 1st half of games.

Very impressed when on a few times Adelaide broke quickly from defence, only to be held up because we were quick to organise defensively with the midfield running back hard, limiting any open targets.

Hurleys running through a Crows player in the last 2 minutes of the game when sent to defense with only eyes for the ball. The guys a warrior, and thats what i rate him highly on. He'll never be overated on that part of his game in my book.

Also, Walkers dont argue on Kommer was brillant, the guys a beast. Well done on Kommer for getting straight back up and competing.
