A hell of a lot of young blokes in their 20’s do dumb s**t..

Now imagine how much dumb s**t a young bloke in his 20’s who’s being payed a million dollars a year could get up to…

Seriously.. are half the crew were in here we are discussing this stuff with angels that were bought up in monestary’s?..

I mean… Who didnt do dumb s**t in their 20’s..
I am sure most of us did.

The difference here is he was already close to edge, knew it, got publicly humiliated for his behaviour, and still can’t learn his lesson. Driving on a suspended licence is a big deal, it’s not like a speeding fine. He’s showing more and more he’s a very loose cannon. Some loose cannons make it through pretty much unscathed eg Swan. Some don’t eg kerr, cousins.

Spot on Clammy ......we forget these are still young men ....probably worse than the average person, given they exist in a sports bubble, and everything is regimented

The AFL takes these young lads, pays them large amounts of money.. and, like you say, then the industry places them in this bubble and puts all sorts of pressures on them to perform..

Then, the club/the afl/ their manager/the afl media gets all shitty and critical with them when they “bring the game into disrepute”

or

Dumps them like a hot potato when they cant perform.

Of course some of them are gonna get a little loose!

Lot of pressure on young men.

The general public would only hear 1 5th of fxxk all of the stuff these lads get up to..

Clayton gets even more scrutiny as hes a high profile player.

With all respect Clammy...

A medical doctor would only recommend a license suspension on medical grounds, if adequate EVIDENCE was present. To go against this recommendation is a bit more serious than "getting a little loose".

My youngest daughter is adopted by me after being orphaned for this precise circumstance. Her case actually changed the law in Victoria to allow doctors more powers than the previous "recommend to patients not to drive" position.

Young men will be young men. We always have and most of us have survived to boast about our old war stories of recklessness and disregard for potential consequence. But how many of us would now, or in the past, allow a mate to drive when pissed? If inclined to turn a blind eye, would it be different if he had his family in the car as well? I would say that we all have an innate desire for safety and especially for innocent potential victims.

Based on the reports of Clayton Oliver's year, the doctors recommendation, and his subsequent disregard of this well meaning advice (help), he is now that guy who, clearly drunk, is leaving the party, heading to the carpark and fumbling for his keys. If you were the only witness to this moment, what would you do? Trivialise it with a joke the lads would laugh at and justify your inaction with "he's been under pressure at work"?

I've ranted on this previously that Clayton Oliver needs help. Right now. A change of circumstance with a fresh start in a new town might well be a good first step. If we were a good club with a good culture and strong ethical comradery, he just might find a move to Adelaide a very good decision.

Is he being accused of drink driving now?..

Really?..

Is that what he’s been charged with?

And no.

As loose as my mates and I ever got there was one rule amongst us that had to be strickly adhered to.

No driving under the influence of drugs or alcohol.

And we inforced that rule with force if required.

You didnt want to even give my mates or myself the slightest sniff of an idea that you were maybe considering driving under the influence.

I’m just not comfortable with the way some are piling on this kid based on reports in the media.

Maybe he would be better off moving to another state.. maybe he grew up with no real father figure and sees Burgess as that, maybe the melbourne bubble is having a terrible effect on him.

Its all media speculation though.

Yet some here are instantly ready to call him a crack whore, a lost cause, paint him as some sort of criminal and/or claim he’s off the rails.. based on rumours being spread in the media.

I said it a while back, but I'm getting some serious Ben Cousins type vibes from Oliver atm. He seems to be heading down a similar path.

I think Melbourne made a big mistake in not trading him during the last trade period, his value will never be as high. They could have got minimum 2 first round picks and ended up with Harley Reid as well as another first rounder this year. If he continues down the path he is on they won't be able to give him away next year with that huge contract.

Hardwick and Gold Coast will take him in a flash

yes we have all done dumb shit, but seriously Oliver is now building a resume of dumb shit……..

let’s not sugar coat this

Oliver is a ****ing adult, he gets paid well and gets a level of support not offered to most in the community and he keeps making ****ing stupid decisions

the lad had obvious issues, and despite all the extra support he gets he keeps making bad decisions, outside of his contract he would be costing MFC a fortune in player support

Oliver is no longer a kid, it’s time he got his shit together

He’s certainly got an opportunity many can only dream of, some forget this, those $$$ aren’t available outside their bubble

Extra support?..

What extra support did the Dees give him?..

They gave him an ultimatum very publicly through the media basically putting it out there that they were the innocent party and he was the devils child!.

If we are all to believe the media rumours about Oliver then shouldnt we also believe the rumours about the coach and some of the leadership team at the dees?.. if so, the “guidance” and “support” he is getting is probably questionable.

Also..

Why does everyone think they can always help these lads?..

You can provide all the guidance, support and advice you want but ultimately the only one that can bring any change in any persons life is themselves.
They have got to want to change.

But none of this is the point I am trying to make.

The point I am making is that referring to the lad as “Off the rails” is a little bit over the top ffs.

Now if he starts running around getting in fights or sexually assaulting people or stealing cars or breaking and entering then yes.. I’d be saying he’s “off the rails” and out of control..

All we’ve seen so far is the actions of a lad that just needs to pull his fxxkn head in a bit.

Driving when you’ve been directed by a doctor not to is the actions of a selfish moron… but its not enough to say its the actions of someone who’s completely “off the rails”..

How can you not love this kid? One of my favourites in the whole team and I also believe on the verge of breaking out to an elite level talent. We all know the traits - fearless (some of those last qtr efforts vs Pies at The G), competitive, excellent athleticism with pace, agility & leap and decision making, composure and kicking skills.

love seeing him stand up for his mates and fly the flag. Grabbing the big American (one on one initially) when USA tried to intimidate. Seems like a bloke you want in the trenches.

we missed out with McAsey but got Murray, Worrell and Hinge all within around 12 months at that time (2 for free, one a mid-late second rounder). Big picture, that’s a great result even if the highest probability player turned into the bust. Wouldn’t you love to hear the negative nancys talk about the exceptional recruitment of Murray, Hinge and Worrell even half as much as we hear about the one failed pick in recent years..

Having had a friend die at the hands of a drunk driver who got parole 🙄 so drink driving was a non negotiable with mates.

Not sure why you aren’t taking the default negative stance here? There are REPEATED instances of bad behaviour here. Inexcusable. Any lesser player and he would likely be goneski. And if you don’t understand the strong support players are provided with - multiple mentors with peers and coaches, psychologist, culture coaches etc then seriously you don’t understand how footy clubs are run. The level of support he would have received is top 1% of anyone in the population yet he has made very bad mistake after mistake. Personally if Dees want to get rid of him end of 2024 in my view we would be bloody stupid to entertain the idea of turning around his entrenched lifestyle, all whilst contracted deep into his 30’s (past his likely best) for 6 more years at 1m + (TPD kickers)

I hope the lad gets help. He needs it

finally I admire and respect you and your mates looking out for each other. Genuinely good stuff

Clarry Oliver has also had drink driving offences in his past:

A first time offender, the court at times depending on the offense may give some more leniency and compassion.

A repeat offender, less likely.

This will be interesting.
