I’d add Sparrow to that list in case he breaks out …. He’s not anything special yet but it’s a year he could improve . Rate him higher than Stephen’s

Im not that concerned about it tbh. You look at what Geelong brought to last years GF and the profile is hardly awe inspiring. What Geelong did/do really well is play to their strengths.

We've already had one opposition coach this year recognise "pressure at the contest" as our signature. Our score off turnovers this pre-season is back to a healthy level. Our disposal seems to have been a focus preseason. We are carrying the ball further in transition making our F50 entries more potent, and we have the cattle and variety up there to make us a difficult match up.

There is no copy/paste template in the AFL. Teams who build game plans around their squad strengths are the ones that succeed. I feel we are building a tenacious, super fit squad with loads of scoring power. Dont mind it at all.
We scored 11.6 off turnover last night … pretty sure we were close to worst in league last year after being consistently up there in Pyke years

Good sign we’ve worked on our pressure and ball movement off back of our pressure

Our stoppage stuff is pretty good and was pretty good last year

I know for fact when we played swans at scg they thought we were really fierce and some of the most pressure they were put under around the ball

Just going to take time with inconsistency but trending well

Poor skill level & turnovers have been our biggest issue the past few years.

If we can rectify this, will go a long way to rising up the ladder.

We appear to be a far better skilled side than the past few years.

I don't understand everyone's desire to see Keays overtaken.

He's clearly best 22 and I'd say now a player that would fit on many teams lists, he can play midfield and forward and gut runs all day.

Watched the replay, bloody happy with with Berry, Hinge, Fog, McAdam,Soligo and Dawson.

Looking like steps in the right direction
If you rate him and he’s overtaken, doesn’t that mean we are better?

It never happens: Geelong's 2022 midfield Danger (#10 FA from Crows), Blicavs (#54 rookie draft), Cam Guthrie (#23 ND), Joel Selwood (#7 ND), Tom Atkins (#11 rookie draft), Isaac Smith (#19 ND), Mark O'Connor (Supp). Mitch Duncan (#28 ND).

One single digit draftee, one elite mid traded from another club and the rest...

I mean mate, I only had to go back 4 months ;)

If we can steal the lunch money from a loser club like Adelaide for our elite we'll be fine.

Just leaving aside the whole Selwood thing.

The issue is there isn't really an elite SA midfielder in the league that we could get back home like Geelong did with Danger.

The Neale ship has sailed, Port already have Rozee and JHF... who else is there?

It seems very unlikely we'd be able to get an elite non SA player here. Since we've never been able to do that
We're one of the few examples of a club to lose a genuine elite.

From that we should infer that we'll totally attract one.

Exactly … let him play half forward and relief mid for 3 years and do lots of team oriented jobs

There’s plenty of class around him even though he’s barely missed a kick or handball all pre season

Aye. We finished 14th last year. Let's see what happens.

Murray could prove to not be good enough. He's still not completely convinced me.
Keays may yet need to be overtaken by the likes of Taylor, Cook or Nankervis to take us from top 8 to contender.
Then it's probable we need another gun midfielder, a ruck and someone to replace Brodie Smith to go to another level.

What if Soligo or Fog gets hit with a career ending injury, or seeks a trade? it's all cross those bridges when you get there kind of scenarios. That said, I don't think squad wise, we're that far away, personnel wise. The biggest issue is just age at the moment. The guys we need to be A-graders to push into a finals side are 20-21, not 23-25.

I think it's safe to say we'll go back to looking for a small forward, seeing we need one of Rankine/Rachele to move to a full time mid (and really, we probably need significant midfield time for both owing to how much talent they have). Ruck is (long) overdue seeing ROB is a cruiser. Beyond that, it's hard to say with any real certainty outside of we need talent. Elite big bodied mid would be one, not particularly neccesary, but worth it's weight in gold if we lucked out. Half back? Maybe, though Hinge/Parnell are in a good position to be able to replace Smith.

Probably the most important thing at the moment is just making sure the 2nds pipeline doesn't dry up, on top of having a solid idea of what we want the side to look like. That talented kids keep coming into the side to replace the ones who stagnate, injured or (god forbid) decide to leave.

That said, Keays is one of the guys I'm confident won't be overtaken (well, overtaken anymore). Defensive forward is a difficult role to find success in, and one Keays is rather well placed to make his own. Especially as the team around him gets better, seeing that'll help keep the goals/score involvement up (and this is a guy who has a big-time defensive game). He probably won't get a CBA from '24 onwards.

A combination of that, and not being confident enough as a unit in our ability to move the ball forward. You could argue it goes hand in hand, but we’ve looked very stagnant at times since 2018

The last two weeks were like watching a totally different team, in that regard

He doesn’t have to kick goals every week (he’s obviously capable, though), but you know at minimum he’ll work his arse off and actually find a bit of the footy

The transition of Keays to HF happened earlier than I expected, but I’m not going to complain

It appears we have switched our game plan from loss minimisation to attacking... helped by a more dangerous forward line.

Thanks Mate, good luck for your season too with the Kangas. Fog is pretty exciting if your nephew picks up anything hopefully it's Fog's kicking style

Believe it or not, he's been studying a lot of old Scott Welsh footage. He is trying to model his game on Welshy, and Fog! I know, he's 8! He is obsessed, I tell you. He's already caught the eye, of TAC cup teams, at such a young age!

I am surprised anyone has doubts on Murray. His defending has always been very good (he is in elite territory for one on one contest wins), the issue was his decision making with ball in hand, but that seems to have improved.

Always have Keane as good backup if Butts/Murray drop off/get injured. Also still have Worrell to come back in. Not at all worried about our KPD stocks, even if Doedee leaves.
My only knock on Murray is his ability to injure his team mates by just being that little bit too clumbsy at times..

That freo game where he hurt the captain is a prime example.

There was no need for him to fly at that contest.. Dawson had it covered and was about to take the grab..

All Murray did was spoil Dawson and injure him in the process..

Thats dumb football..

Fxxk I love it when he puts an opponent in a world of pain though!

Just needs to be a bit smarter and more aware is all.

Was great last night.

Elijah Hollands being a crows fan growing up and going to a team with minimal support like GC should be a target. Does he become an elite mid? Not sure yet.

Phillipou is the other one that comes to mind.
Didn’t Elijah also live in Adelaide at one point?.

or maybe his mum did/does?

Note: might be getting him mixed up with chance jones, not sure..

It’s odd though, that’s not how we played in the internal and against Freo, against West Coast it was just run and attack, no chip chip chip kicking

I think a large part of that was West Coast were powerless in stopping us playing fast (and of course a lot of turnovers in dangerous areas). We did speed up a bit against Freo in the second half once we had control.

And I don't think there was anything to really take out of the trial.
