Mini will get good buy in with that strategy. Not valuing kicks/marks/handballs while valuing impact on the next contest means it's something everyone can shine at as long as they want to.

It's how Richmond won all those flags - even the spuds were able to play a role because it didn't matter what their stats were as long as they were influencing the contest.

Tbf I found that a bit cliche. Feel like thats what every coach in the modern game wants (including simmo)

Good news to see Hewett and Long back, coach reckons Hewey is fit and ready to go!
Enjoyed Mini's presser and team meet. He sounds the biz, bit of steely resolve about him.
Woosha will add some grunt! Ginbey stays back with Baker it seems.
Hall's new hair/style in one pic looked half decent, was often the joke amongst players.
Be interesting to see the 3 amigos slot in soon amongst the crew.
I presume Mini's chaos ball thing won't be a direct template of Richmond, every team is doing it, it will have his own customised tweaks, with individual players abilities in mind.
Just great to see training start...

Interesting times for Tom Cole, if Ginbey, Hough and baker are all playing back. Not surprised he was back day 1.😂

Those legs are tiny compared to his upper body
He has big shoulders and chest for sure, but have a look at that photo and tell me the dude doesnt put any work into those legs.
Hes an AFL footballer, not a union or league player so isnt going to have power lifter legs. Nothing skinny about those pins and he is one of the best sprinters at the club.

Cole is leaky played deep in a shutdown role but we're always better when he's higher up playing aggressively and coming through the back of stoppages. Has good instincts picking when to go and his disposal isn't technically as sound as eg Duggan's but he makes better decisions in quick time. I've always thought our default setup has their roles the wrong way around.

Your right
He is horrid one on one defender, statistically one of the worst in the league
But further up the ground looks better

He’ll get good buy in but Richmond’s gameplan fell off a cliff just like ours. New rules have exposed the genuine battler types who have below par skills. Brisbane (nearly everyone else as well) basically play the same turnover and get the ball forward asap style, but they do it with skill and have more gears to control the ball.

Feel like we’re going down the wrong path by trying to recruit and implement the Richmond 2017-20 era. It’s not innovative, it’s outdated and imo will never put us where we want to be. The modern game relies more on individual skill than it used to and you can get by with a good “team” anymore.

I think this is a really simplistic assumption on where we're going as a club due to having an ex-Richmond assistant as our head coach and a couple of Richmond players on board. When we picked up Simmo, Rawlings & Petrie did you assume we were going the North Melbourne template?

McQualter (not calling him Mini until he wins me over with an absolute heart and guts win) has said there will be aspects of both Richmond and Melbourne gameplans - where he has worked as an assistant and both have been recent premiership winners - with his own spin on it. Concentrating on contested footy and pressure is not specific to the premiership Tigers and will fit well with our sub-par and young list in building confidence and belief and influencing the game by not relying purely on talent - which is effectively what he said.

Yeah fair points but we’ve also got their former list manager building the list so I’m not really that confident we’re forging a new path.

The days of having a couple of guns in the middle and soldiers everywhere else is fading fast. They’re obviously essential but you also need good ball use out of the back half and entering the forward 50.

Richmond and Melbournes gameplans of running and pressuring teams off their feet just doesn’t cut it anymore when teams can do that and slice you open with good skills.

If those are the two teams he’s basing it off then we’re f*cked because both did the same thing and have been found out since. It’ll be Harley (Martin, Petracca), a couple of good key pillars and shit, in terms of skills and 1v1 ability, everywhere else.

Of course - those styles are dated and those teams have fallen off for a reason. However, people can evolve throughout their career - especially off-field. Malthouse had different gamestyles at the Eagles and the Pies over a huge amount of time too. Both McQualter and Clarke may surprise you beyond being the one trick ponies you may assume. Well let's hope so anyway.

So you are basically saying:

1) Recruit guns in every position.

2) Good ball use from D50 and entering F50.

3) Good ball use to work through defensive systems, not just elite fitness.

1 is impossible and 2 and 3 is what every team is trying to do.
