That describes an aging list that lacks hunger, size and speed.

Our lack of intent in many games over the past 3 to 4 years has been deplorable.

That is what needs addressing first and foremost.

And in 2025 I am confident that the last two drafts and trade periods will address that and we improve on the small steps taken last season.

The look on Sheeds face at training told the story. "How the hell am I going to keep up with all these kids, never mind three best 22 recruits."

Can see this season for Sheed following Gaff's final season.
If the game is mostly played between the ears shouldn't the ex Cricket Australia sports pyschologist on our payroll be able to address the lack of intent.
Couldn't help but notice he was part of the large crew at the draft, maybe he's getting in early before they get bad habits from the older players.

Another session in the books

Continued focus primarily on skills and ball movement. Bit of work on positioning to set up for a turnover and then transition the ball forward

Some contested work but nothing like last year at this stage. Finished the session with a few 400m runs

Didn’t see - McGovern, Brockman, Dewar, Livingstone, Johnston and Cole (who did make a late and very brief appearance)

Long, Chesser and Reid did some stationary work for maybe 20 minutes or so before leaving

Jamieson, Hutchinson, Sheed, Yeo Hough and Petruccelle all did rehab work to varying extents but all look a bit away from joining the main group. Don’t think any of them will participate in a meaningful way this side of Christmas

Thoughts on a few players from today
• Ryan is fine when the balls are out but struggles with the running (didn’t do the last few 400m runs) There’s work to do on his tank and he will be interesting to see if that impacts selection should it not improve
• Baker is becoming increasingly vocal on the track and his leadership that was spoken of pre-draft is showing through. I know we paid a high price for him but I’m starting to see the attraction
• Hewett is being managed so he doesn’t overdo it but when he is involved in drills his speed and power is noticeable. Still a long way to R1 but if he gets through preseason unscathed he can have a real impact
• Duggan is low key having a good preseason and looks in pretty good shape. Perhaps a bit bigger in his shoulders from memory
• Hough I’ve not really seen this preseason but he was doing some run throughs with Yeo on the boundary. He looks to have added even more size and was hard to tell apart from Yeo. If anything he’s a bit bigger than him
• Flynn is covering the ground well. Lead the big men in the runs. Seems determined to make up for last year
• Gross showed some nice clean hands in a couple of the ball movement drills
• Bazzo did a fair bit of the main session but not all as he works his way back to fitness
• There was a new face in training that looked like Harley Sparks from our WAFL team

Enjoyed reading this (and your training posts in general). Any other info on Baker, Graham and Owies regarding their speed, endurance, skills, leadership etc greatly appreciated, given the furore they caused during trade period.

Made it down to training again this morning, a solid session to start the week. Similar to the last couple weeks, mainly focusing on ball movement with a little contested work, and regular 400m runs and set shot work to break it up. Session lasted around 2 hours (9:30 to 11:30 again), though about a quarter of the list either weren’t there or were on light duties.

Details on who did/didn’t train:
  • Players I didn’t see: Brockman, McGovern, Johnston, Cole*, Livingstone, Dewar
  • *Cole did come out around an hour into the session and said hello to some of the boys, but didn’t train. Was sporting a cast on his right hand.
  • Looks like ToastieBoy18 ‘s post about Gov injuring his ribs was correct as he wasn’t out there today (just quietly they have been sharing some nice inside info on here recently)
  • It means 37 listed players trained at some point + 3 train ons - Burgiel, Brock and a new face in Harley Sparks - our reigning WAFL Eagles B&F. So 40 in total on the track
  • Of those 40, Chesser, Harley and Long did the least. All I saw them do was some stationary kicking and handballing for about 20 minutes before heading inside
  • A group of about 5 - Hutchinson, Hough, Yeo, Sheed, Petruccelle - were doing rehab work away from the main group. They ran laps, did run throughs and some basic skill work - nothing too strenuous, though it’s the most I’ve seen those all those players do (bar maybe Sheed) since the squad returned.
  • Petch probably did the least of that lot and was done by 10:15, Hough, Yeo and Sheed finished up about 10 minutes after, and I’d say Hutch did the most - was ramping up his speed by the end and was the last of that group to finish.
  • I did see someone move to the Oval 1 grandstand around 10:30 and do some work on the stairs for about half an hour - looked like Yeo but couldn’t really tell from a long distance away.
  • Jamieson came out about half an hour later than the rest of the players and did some light run throughs for 20 minutes - again, very low intensity but it’s the first time I’ve seen him running since the players returned from their break.
  • Ginbey and Hewett were managed out of a couple of drills but otherwise trained (very) well - will get to these two later
  • Ryan seemed to struggle in the 400m runs the boys did and went inside a fair bit earlier than everyone else. He is not a great trainer at the best of times so it’s nothing too unusual, but as Keys mentions I wonder how much McQualter will take this into account in regards to selection this season, compared to what Simpson did
  • The draftees did the first 80-90 minutes with the squad before heading inside. They also sat out the 400m runs and a couple of the other ball movement drills.
  • In good news Bazzo trained fully after being managed a bit recently

Now, some observations/things that caught my eye:
  • There is a clear focus on fast ball movement in the drills they’ve been doing. I do realise it is only training and they’re not really going against a proper team defence, but it’s still very apparent. One of the drills they did involved moving the ball from a contested situation into the forward line to a leading target. Another drill involved defending the short kick options from opposition, forcing them into long down the line and a subsequent turnover, and then moving the ball forward as fast as they could off that turnover. The speed of the ball movement was clear in both drills.
  • First look at Sandy Brock for me and I didn’t mind the look of him. Probably needs to add some size but moves well for a player of his height and was regularly hitting targets with a nice left foot kick
  • Flynn is moving well - was apparent in the 400m runs they did, where he held his own and was among the faster of the tall guys. Jack Williams continues to impress too.
  • Hewett is looking very good at the moment - just looks a class above at stages and is running well. As I mentioned he doesn’t do every single drill but he’s well exceeded my expectations so far this preseason
  • Just want to shout out Ginbey again, just an outstanding trainer. Best runner in the squad, built like a brick shithouse, brings ferocity to the contact work, really vocal out there and is always one of the last to leave the track. They seem to be holding him back a bit at the moment but I just love this guy - will be in the leadership group within a few years I think.
  • Baker similarly brings a great intensity to his training and you can see why he was VC at Richmond - starting to become more vocal on the track
  • Hunt is training well - looks fully fit and is using his pace regularly after an injury interrupted 2024
  • Duggan, Maric and Sparks trained with the backs when they split into smaller groups at the end of the session. They completed a kicking drill under the watchful eye of Shannon Hurn

Great news about Hewett (and Ginbey) - fingers crossed he gets a good run at the season!

If you're getting injuries, I'd rather them hit at the start of preseason and not the end.

It is a bit concerning that a bunch of guys seemed more injured after the break than the last round of the season (eg Hutch, Harley). Hopefully they're just easing them in and managing loads.

is Sparks just training to improve his game or is he a sneaky chance for an SSP instead of Burgiel, 23 and similar position?

Not sure, hasn’t been announced. I wouldn’t mind taking a punt on him if he trains well in the coming weeks, he’s a classy distributor off half back and really composed with the footy.

Now I think about it, he is actually quite similar to Burgiel in the way he plays

SWFL won a Hayward medal with highest score ever recorded.

Just a reminder that last year we also had a few injuries in the lead up to the season but during the actual season we ended up being pretty durable.
I'd think it'll be similar to last year, push the players hard, yes they might break down a little but nothing serious so during the season we get through even better again.

From the few training reports from other clubs I’ve seen, we seem to have to most players on restrictions.

I posted about this earlier that it’s a low key concern just how many players we have on modified programs. It’s not panic stations yet but I’d prefer to see some of these players joining back with the main group sooner rather than later

One feature of last preseason was our tendency to pull players out of full training at the first sign of any issue so I think this might just be Innes taking a cautious approach

G'day squires, here's some shabby footage from this morning for those of you who are obsessed.
Was pretty windy and I was just balancing the thing on me knee, so much of it is quite shaky - unlke our footskills which are beyond reproach.
