Atkins will be perfect in the finals if we need a cooler on a mid - thinking Collingwood - Taylor Adams, Melbourne - Jack Viney, Sydney - Warner. He can play small down back, pressure forward as well as quality midfield time, and just gives us flexibility. He adds to the mids, but also to the pressure runners (Myers, Stengle, etc). Only misses if he is carrying an injury IMO, otherwise he will be backed on form I think.

How is "form" calculated and what do the points represent (e.g is 60.1 a % higher than average, or rating points?)

AFL rating points adjusted for game time, player position, opposition difficulty and access to inside midfield rotations

60.1% greater than expected point given that players' game time, player position, opposition difficulty and access to inside midfield rotations

My concern with Atkins is is complete drop off in form in the last three weeks, its about 60% lower than his expected by position and a 66% drop off compared to himself. Selwood is in a similar boat with a drop off of 43% in both. Atkins' mid season purple patch seems a long way away, he could be vulnerable right now as there isn't much space for him to go down back either.

Miers has been in great form in the 2nd half of the year, his early season form was atrocious, It made me biased against him but I just have to get over it.

That's without considering how to fit in Menegola, Duncan, Henry forward or back which flows to Kolodjashnij( pre-concussion was up +30%/+30%) and Rohan.

I'm glad I'm not the match committee,
All 3 games were fairly low intensity.
You’ll find that the more intense the game is, the more Atkins will become involved.

Look at his games when the heat really is on.
He’s exactly the player we need playing finals.
He’s one of the last players I’m concerned about.

This is they key, it's unfortunate but he really does need to perform come QF time, purely due to tightness of spots (same as Rohan, Miers, Zuthrie etc etc)

Expecting this to be very close. Confident we’re the better side but Collingwood are riding a wave at the moment and that can’t be underestimated.

The unpredictable nature of their forward entries is what worries me most. They don’t have a singular target as such which makes it much harder for our backs to zone off. Their ball movement is fast and aggressive too so there will be plenty of 1 on 1 opportunities. This is an area where I think we can be a little susceptible at times.

Geelong by 7 points in a high scoring shootout.

His last 3 weeks have been far below his standard though, I back him to turn that around come finals of course but he's a bit more wobbly than he was a month ago.
That WCE game had absolutely no pressure. We laid like 20 tackles for the game. Ofc a player like Atkins would struggle to dominate in that environment, but if our finals are played like that then we either have a shit ton more to worry about (if we're being smacked around the ball), or nothing to worry about it (absolutely dominating). If finals play out like we expect them to (close, high pressure, need for clean hands and quick thinking), he will come to the fore.

Who plays on Nick Daicos?
Do we tag him?

Depends because with the pressure players we have in our forwardline I just don't see him getting the time and space he needs.

30 disposals under pressure from Stengle, Close and maybe even Atkins, he won't be kicking at his 75% DE in a final.
Against the Swans he had 20 disposals, 6 clangers, was fairly average and kicked at 60%. Not great under Swans pressure. Swans didn't run a hard tag on him, because they had the pressure up.

We will be the same.
We are going to win centre clearances, i50 stats etc. But unlike Carlton (but like the Swans) we have small pressure forwards who, you know, actually pressure well. So Daicos won't be afforded the time and space to run off his man (likely Close) because Close can keep pace with him defensively and I don't think Daicos can afford to let Close get off the chain because he hits the scoreboard and makes assists.

Zac Guthrie has had a much better year than Bews, and looks a good fit for Elliott.

Tough call as Bews has actually been ok in finals relative to his team mates.

I think they will go with Bews and Zuth will be sub.
Overcall. Bews has been reliable and solid and attacking. Not one player has demoralised him this year, let alone beaten him. That I can recall anyway.

I still think he's safe purely because they take a conservative view with Danger and Sel minutes wise, or halfway expect niggles to present. Guthrie with the slight issue too and Parfitt has terrible luck with getting injured in finals. If Stanley went down and Blicavs had to ruck then similar thing.

They are really big on mid rotations this season so I think they like Atkins even in a reduced role, but ready to step up at any time or if things aren't going well with the others.

Could be a useful sub, but I'd argue Menegola or Zuthrie are better options for that.

Exactly. He doesn't get beaten and wins 1v1s/hard balls. Occasionally breaks the game open but in reality you need a couple of "anchors" in an attacking side and Bews is one of those for us. Ludicrous to think he'd be dropped.

1/ what a stupid time of day to play it.

2/ you’ve got to respect what Collingwood have done over 3 months.

3/ I actually think we play similar styles but we are just a lot better.

4/ talk of big wins are silly. 20-35 points for me.

5/ no resting. None. We pay Cameron $1 mil. If he breaks down he breaks down. Geez, he ripped them a new butthole last time.

All chips in time.

CATS fans can breathe a sigh of relief with prolific midfielder Cam Guthrie expected to be fit for Geelong's first qualifying final in 12 days’ time.

"Cameron got a knock on his shoulder joint in a collision incident during the game against the Eagles," head of medical and conditioning services Harry Taylor says.

“He was taken off the field as a precautionary measure and we expect him to be available for selection for the first final.”

The classy Mitch Duncan is also expected to be fit for selection after missing the final two rounds of the season.

“Mitch had a minor hip issue that resulted in the decision to leave him out of the Round 23 game against West Coast,” Taylor says.

“We expect Mitch to be available for selection for the first final,” Taylor says.

The duo joins Jeremy Cameron (hamstring) and Rhys Stanley (groin) as potential inclusions for the First Qualifying Final, with both Cameron and Stanley still tracking as expected after missing the final round.

Jeremy Cameron and Rhys Stanley remain on track and expect to be available for the first Final,” Taylor says.

Jake Kolodjashnij will need to tick all the required boxes to be considered for the clash after he landed awkwardly on his head in the first term om Saturday night.

“Jake has entered the AFL concussion protocols and will be monitored closely during this period with his availability to be determined once he exits the protocols,” Taylor says.

Sam Menegola was withdrawn from the side that took on the Eagles as the club looks to get him in the best shape possible for its finals campaign.

“The decision was made to manage Sam for the game against the Eagles to give him every opportunity leading into the first Final.”

Bews will most likely get Ginnivan. The concern is he can be sloppy with his tackles at times, especially on the divers.

Hopefully the umps continue to not pay those high ones where the player in possession contributes to the high contact.

Have said this before about our current goalkicking
Also if it is a problem in ordinary games how bad is it going to be in final?
Hawkins, Cameron, Rohan, 3 primary forwards look very flaky on set shots of late.
They’ll be fine.

Pendelbury - I'd be telling Atkins and Parfitt to nail him - he always fakes a disposal to buy himself more time and it works - just keep running at him and when he fakes don't buy it - you get that extra 1/2 second to close on him and make the tackle.......
and if he ducks into it, make him earn it.

Let’s be real - Atkins is 100% certainty to play.

I would guess:
Atkins, Cameron, Stanley; Duncan all in

Sav, ceglar, O’Connor, kolo all out

Kolo unlucky, club will be cautious with him and concussion, no real matchup need for him against collingwood

Menegola will be sub

Kolo looks like an odd man out against a few teams. He is needed if we face Sydney and their talls.

Maybe kolo is needed to give us flexibility to move Henry around if needed.

All being equal there is going to be some unlucky players this September at Geelong.

Not sure that’s right about Kolo having no opponent. With Mihocek (192cm) and Johnson (193cm) they seem ideal matchups. Henry will get the one Kolo doesn’t. De Koning on Cox.

It’s shaping to me that Zuthrie will be the stiffest player omitted in a very long time.
