OK, so my son (17) and I are going to spend some of the Christmas break doing our own version of "The Streak": given we've won flags in six consecutive decades, we will watch one per day from each decade.
The 60s, 90s, and noughties selections are trivial, but what about the 70s, 80s, and threepeat?
On the 70s, my thinking is: 71 good tough game, he gets to see Hudson. 76 I've never actually seen in full, so am angling for that for only that reason, and 78 is a terrific game which I've watched a couple of times and he'd get to see Knights in action. Selfishly I'm thinking 76.
On the 80s, the obvious one is '89, although that would give us two Geelong GFs in a row. 88 is fun, but a bit of a yawnfest given how one way it is, and 83 to a large extent is as well. That leaves 86... always fun to see Dermie and the Chief in action together. I'm leaning towards 89 though.
For the threepeat, this one is fairly simple for us, he's never seen the 2013 GF in full, and I know he's watched the other two several times.
Curious to know what other folks on this board would have as their choices for the six decade streak.
Cheers,
P
Bernie Jones is the Hawthorn player on the ground the standing player is (I think) Kevin Heath, the St Kilda player might be Stuart Trott. I think I can see the hint of a moustache under the hands. But it'd have to be before he started losing his hair.help appreciated, can you name the 2 players on the ground?i know it happened at princess park under the heatley stand 1974 or after, cheers
thanks, but lethal is the guy standing,i suspected heath was the player on the ground, but he wore 8 and number is not 8,i just remember seeing the pic 40 years ago or so & the location stuck with me & heath rang a bell as being one of the 2,but will take your word on bernie jonesBernie Jones is the Hawthorn player on the ground the standing player is (I think) Kevin Heath, the St Kilda player might be Stuart Trott. (trott also missed the following round.)
Of course it's lethal standing, I saw the sideburns and immediately went with Heath. But absolutely certain the player on the ground is Jones.thanks, but lethal is the guy standing,i suspected heath was the player on the ground, but he wore 8 and number is not 8,i just remember seeing the pic 40 years ago or so & the location stuck with me & heath rang a bell as being one of the 2,but will take your word on bernie jones
in 1974 trott got very good stats, jones was very low, stephen theodore of saints stats were very low, only other possible year is 75,as jones didnt play that game in 76 and his stats were very good in 77,also looking at lethal,74/75 is most likely, sure he didnt look like that in 77Of course it's lethal standing, I saw the sideburns and immediately went with Heath. In 74 also, Jones didn't play the following week. Neither did theodore (whose build matches the player on the ground) I was just going trott due to the hint of a moustache, which may or may not be there.in 1974 trott got very good stats, jones was very low, stephen theodore of saints stats were very low, only other possible year is 75,as jones didnt play that game in 76 and his stats were very good in 77,also looking at lethal,74/75 is most likely, sure he didnt look like that in 77
gotta be 74,as niether saints reserves got a run in 75
thanks, going 100% jones and its theodore till i hear better, cheersIn 74 also, Jones didn't play the following week. Neither did theodore (whose build matches the player on the ground) I was just going trott due to the hint of a moustache, which may or may not be there.
Also that looks very much like 31 on Jones's back (which was his number).thanks, going 100% jones and its theodore till i hear better, cheers
Doesn't look like a 3 to me.Also that looks very much like 31 on Jones's back (which was his number).
I thought about creating one… but it seems too soon for most on the above list. And I think this question requires a thread
I know he's not popular these days, but Worpel has great captaincy credentials should he recapture his form and development trajectory. He captained the Geelong Falcons to a flag. He was also captain for the Vic Country team in his U18 year. And at least for a time he was in our leadership group at the club.Future captains (after Sic who, IMO, is a certainty for 2023)
We have a plethora of options.
- Moore: came from humble beginnings captain. No-one can deny he would have earned it
- Ward: one-with-the-lot captain. From his professionalism to his (to date for his age) performance, to his apparent ease in speaking to the media.
- CMac: a more intense captain, … has the ambition
- Frenchy: media darling captain.
- Newc: white line, heart and sole captain. Chill off the field, would run through brick walls on it.
- Day: skilled speaks well Captain
- Lewis: carry the weight of everything on his shoulders captain. The Atlas Captain!
- CJ: joker captain. Please let him do the media stuff
It would be awesome!
Agreed, Worps is captaincy material. But first he must be in the best 22. Worpel is in the best 22. He was before getting injured. And that was when Mitchell and O'Meara were still around.Agreed, Worps is captaincy material. But first he must be in the best 22. Shall we add:
- Worpel: a Captain who regained B&F form. Edited and added.
Well, turns out the mark I was thinking of was about 10 minutes in to the merger game against Melbourne. For all those who were wondering! It was against Port Adelaide over Lade i reckon. I can't remember the year. Might have been closer to the goal square as well
Paul Barnard maybe?, Brad Scott, Josh Kennedy, Ben McGlynn maybe? Are Smith and Chick the only former Hawks this century to win flags as players at their new club?
