Re: Did anyone make it to training?

I had planned to but work got in the way and my two other regular track watches couldn't make it to training either.

If the weather at training was anything like where I was before (horizontal rain anyone?), I'm glad I went to work for once....

Re: Did anyone make it to training?

The team ventured on to the waterlogged Waverly park about 11:20, the rain, hail and wind had passed by at that stage but there was plenty of water on the surface. Believe it or not the Sun actually came out when they left the track about 30 minutes later.

Young & Shiels both trained as did the whole team from last week, I didn't see any of the other boys on our injured list. Young had strapping on his thigh and was one of the first to leave the track but he pretty much did the whole session. Gilham appeared to have similar strapping on his thigh, Goo had very thick padded skins on but both did the full session.

Sammy gave Carl a light hearted stirring cause he was wearing a white peaked cap, Sam said something about it not being pre-season any more. I think Carl was just trying to do everything he could to keep warm. Carl spent a bit of time on his goal kicking at the end of the session but most left the track at the end of the session.

Not much else I can think of, I was one of about 10 people there plus a few cameras & journos. I think Sam Edmund from The Hun was one of them, he had a Hawks sticker on his portfolio, it nice to have a fellow Hawk amongst the media.

Re: Alastair Clarkson says Hawks can play a lot better

I think we all agree there is still plenty of room for improvement - let's just hope we see it eventuate over the next 10+ weeks...

Re: Did anyone make it to training?

Thanks dlindsay, good to hear they all trained. I think a wet match will give us a bit of an edge too.

Tonights Footy Flashback 1992 V West Coast.

This was my all time most stressful game to watch. Beats the 2001 loss to the Scum hands down.

Was sitting in the keno lounge at the Westpoint Casino (only place I could find a tv on a conference weekend) and was told to calm down by the security staff for yelling.

Should have been our second back to back in out history but a few things meant it was never to be and then started the 19 years of pain.

Sookie boy Robran went off back to mummy in SA, Mew did his hammy, that damn goal that bounced over the defenders head then jagged at right angles. Oh and the amount of interstate finals we played, heck it seemed like it was every year.

Anyone out there old enough to remember this game ?

Two week break

Going into the break, we are very, very well placed (as we all know).

But what does this mean inside the club in terms of a training block? Do they really pump out the km's, doing a 'mini-preseason' again, or will they try something else?

"where's he at" threads - Where are they at

possibly the most pointless threads to appear on these boards. Attracts those who have axes to grind against our hawthorn players and rarely deliver any meaningful analysis.

Perhaps we need to incorporate the "where is xxxxxx at" threads in Hawkeye

I love the way some of our supporters turn on our players when they hit a rough patch. for example. Changa was one of the few that didn't suffer a GF hangover, but played as our sole link man for the entire 09 getting heavy tags each week. Now in 2010 after an injury interrupted preseason and a couple of suspensions, or not stringing games together, he gets his own "Wheres he at thread."

Rookie elevations and slots

I was under the impression last year that any rookie listed player was eligible for senior selection in the second half of the season ie rounds 12 to 22, regardless of elevated status or LTI slots.

I thought htis second half year exemption to the elevation rules allowed Milne to play his 2 (?) games late last year.

a. Is this correct?

b. If this is correct does this exemption still apply this year in the current rookie elevation rules?

Thankyou.

ps please do not reply if you don't know the answer.

Re: Rookie elevations and slots

I believe you can only do this for one rookie. See for example this from fanfooty in the middle of last year: "The new rule allowing a free rookie elevation after round 11 is now in force, with two teams already using it."

This is the same this year from everything I've read (for example on this page on the Essendon site), one additional rookie can be elevated for any reason from the end of round 11 through to the Tuesday before round 22. Impossible to find anything clear on it on official sites though.

Re: Rookie elevations and slots

last year it was after round 11 only one could be used, however, this year following round 7 any number can be used.

this is partially due to injury numbers, allowing teams to use healthy players, but also a result of the trade rules in which rookies can now be involved in trades.

2010 Hawks now playing man on man.

We seem to have added an extra Bow to our Armour, we are now playing man on man footy when we have to, where as before we only played the zone.
I have noticed this since the Weagles game, and we have also started kicking it long and slowly only using half as much handballs, in our Premiership year we struggled with man on man footy because we were so focused on the zone.
Man on man footy was always our weakness and good teams would kill us in that area, even Bruce Delicious McCavaney mentioned this on Friday night, we never had a plan B when they broke through the zone, but now i am amazed and excited to see us playing this man on man and also we still play the zone so we now have a plan B.
I think this is the reason why we have come back from the slumps and slowly each week we are gaining more confidance in it.
I'm looking forward to seeing how we go against the zone kings Saint Kilda, if we can break through their zone then i have high hopes for the finals.:thumbsu:

Re: 2010 Hawks now playing man on man.

Actually, We've not solely 'played the zone' for some time.
Clarkson has shown Plan B, C and D before well before McAvaney noticed.

Just look at how we set up and played in 2008 Premiership. The 'Cluster' was hardly in effect during the course of the game.

Re: 2010 Hawks now playing man on man.

About time i say, we are becoming more adaptable , depending on who we play, you will find when we come up against geelong we will revert back to the "full-ground zone" as they find it difficult to break down whenever they play us.

It will be interesting to see what game-style clarko uses against the doggies, they have runners on every line and they will try to use there run at the open spaces of the MCG

Re: 2010 Hawks now playing man on man.

ahh, gotta love the media!

we played man-on-man in the 2008 grand final, it won us a flag.

the zone may have played a part in that, but it was definately man-on-man

You do not stop geelong using a zone.

Re: 2010 Hawks now playing man on man.

We are playing man on man much better now it seems ,though we did it ok in the 08 Granny but that was mainly because the Cats were shell shocked because they were not prepared for us to play man on man they prepared for our zone/cluster.
I truely believe we are not playing as bad as the score boards have been showing and it is because we are getting more comifitable with changing game styles through out games when one or the other is not working for us.

Re: 2010 Hawks now playing man on man.

How many editions of Hawk Talk have been released this year? As I am pretty sure I've only received volume 1 so far.
