Murphy should have been the one to go. I like him, but the guy is just too short and can't time his leads so the mids kick it on his head all the damn time. Eddie and Stengle was the play. Scholl or Butts instead of Otten.
I'd have gone with Scholl over Otten too.
Stengle and Jones for Betts and Murphy imo

Well I have the disadvantage of a TV viewing of this game. However my information is that that Cripps was tagged for around half of the game, and got around half of his stats in that time.

I will be honest - I read these threads as a rare gloating opportunity. But being rational, I would worry most about one of Adelaide's most impressive players - O' Brien in the ruck.

Looks like a great prospect, and you don't see a good young ruck every day.

And yet he conceded 4 consecutive goals to his opposing ruckman. And him not even in the picture at the contest. Would have been 5 if not for a miss from 25 out in front.

The kid might be lazy - I don't think so.

Or let down by how his coaches are using him.
ROB got pantsed on Saturday, smashed in the middle and killed when his opponent went forward. He still gave it his all, which is better than half the team that has played 10x as many AFL games. Would never call ROB lazy, he has been the one shining light this season.

We even yelled to Pyke in the warm-up to tag Cripps. Sloane ain't a tagger and it was foolish and stupid to expect him to be one.

Don't think he has learnt how to defend when ruckman lead-up in the forward line yet (possibly a Teague inside knowledge there) and I don't think he was on Casbolt when he kicked those goals as a forward, he is an elite runner and did take some few massive marks down back.

Yeah...I thought they'd brought in Wilson to tag Cripps but he wasn't near him most of the time. Cripps was able to push off his opponents all day, regardless of who we had on him. Greenwood would probably have been the best size match-up (CEY if he was fit), and we drop him - just mystifying selection (recognising Greenwood hasn't been setting the world on fire, but maybe a tagging role would've been a catalyst for a return to form). ROB is a good honest trier, but he was beaten badly by their second string ruck set-up, and JJ was even worse, especially in the ruck. Do we bring back Sauce and give ROB a rest this week? The hitouts to advantage stat was the worst in my view, hence our being smashed in clearances.

Kid looks a real prospect, but Casboult kicked all his goals while rucking. Planned tactic from Teague for the rucks to push forward aggressively at every opportunity against O'Brien (gave rise to the odd sight of Phillips having to come back from deep forward to take a centre bounce infringement free he didn't know he was getting).

Adelaide box very slow to react on a plan that was killing them.

Dropping Betts and Greenwood was the right call imo. Stengle got 2 which is more than Betts would have, so nothing lost there.

Wilson, sure he was in form, but another inside mid? Cmon, even Pyke said we need more speed (Jones)

Keath out was an opportunity to change the dynamic down back. We are too tall and slow.

Keath out for Scholl for me.

Knight on Cripps from the opening bounce.

But no, we let Cripps run loose and play Otten

Did you recently discover gifs? :D:D:D

It’s not unusual for us to be smashed in the coaches box, actually we are quite used to it these days.

Which is all the more astonishing given we went in with 3 tall defenders and you played just the 2 tall forwards.

Last Friday on 5AA, Mattner said Otten and Hartigan can both play on talls and smalls, so shouldn't have been an issue for us

True, but Casboult's first was against Jenkins. On the coverage they made a point of mentioning that Jenkins wasn't within 30 m of him.

And yet we have plenty of non-vanilla in the freezer !!

I seriously doubt we could have picked a worse team - and coached that 22 any worse than we did.

That HAS to fall on Pyke and the other coaches and members of the selection committee. But it won't.

If we do not get in a new team to run the football down there ... we are stuffed for as far as the eye can see.

Staff
I can't find the page on AFC that shows the current staff?
Fagan and Burton being the key culprits ... maybe they are too busy building that HUGE trophy cabinet and can't afford the time needed to get themselves onto a webpage?

Fagan and Burton MUST be the moved on. It's a hopeless setup that has yielded NOTHING.

It's more unusual if it doesn't happen

So Roo this morning says he would have tagged and believes they are valuable.

Does he even talk to our coaches?

I don't believe they have met.

Having never posted in the autopsy thread before last week I'm going the running double here since I forked out extra coin on the weekend to attend the club function at the MCG and deserve somewhere to vent.

- I know the selection policies have been head scratching but one thing you can be rest assured of is this selection panel clearly doesn't consider the opposition when they do move around the fridge magnets (to be honest, I'm not sure they use magnets at all, more likely rusted and welded in pieces of scrap iron).
- How does Gibbs continually get dropped when guys like Atkins and Murphy play every week.
- On the former, you are a squib pure and simple. For the latter, you can't fault the endeavor but I'm so over the flying for marks, being out of position in defensive structures and the ongoing skills errors.
- We had one, count it, one, tackle in the forward half until half way through the second quarter. Coaching staff must think we would have recorded a negative stat had we played Fogarty and Jones.
- I just love the defensive backward switch kick of 25 metres we have perfected to a player standing still. Some of these were executed when the ball carrier was inside the centre square. We either are trying to take advantage of the deep wings of the MCG (rolls eyes) or its the only way the back six can get a breather before the ball sling shots out of our forward line.
- Speaking of which, how can we leave so much space in the opposition forward line when we neither apply effective forward pressure or the back six provide offensive drive? They may as well stay home and play old school kick to a contest footy.
- There is zero "X Factor" in this team.
- Another week and another bunch of opponents record career days.
- Exactly what we are missing are running around in Lion and Hawk jumpers.
- We either make no changes in game to structure and personnel or they are so inept no one notices. Throwing Hooker forward killed two weeks ago, Carlton ruck men just running forward from the centre clearance knowing we wouldn't hurt them the other way did the same on Saturday.

In all that we could still make the 8....with 9 wins!

Just my take on the game on Saturday, I was quite surprised at the way Adelaide played on Saturday. I haven't watched much of them this year so maybe you always play like this.

Adelaide refuse to kick longer than 20m-25m. Just hit up a short lead after short lead after short lead, refuse to take the game on and couldn't get any flow going. Would rather go sidewards than long and lose all momentum. The only time it looked ok was in the 3rd quarter when you guys went in a bit harder and the game was played on your terms for about 10 mins.

Carlton seemed ready for it and manned up a lot more than we usually would. Usually we would play a zone defense but we were still in a zone but closer to each opponent and cut off the short passes, resulting in a lot of turnovers.

What really got me was when you were about 3 goals down in the last qtr and needed to move the ball, anytime you got a free kick or a turnover, rather than taking the game on, you went sidewards to a short pass in a worse position than the guy before him and let carlton get their zone/setup right. Looked very much like Carlton at the end of Bolton's reign, scared to make a mistake or take the game on.
