Ratten To Be Sacked

They are in monster trouble the Saints.

I can't see anyone but Lenny Hayes taking over. Its the only way forward.

They won't go down the Yze path and he probably doesn't want it.

Their list is diabolical.

If the AFL was a serious business they'd fold/merge/relocate the Saints to open the door for Tassie as team 18.

Many people on here laugh and make fun of the former club I used to follow due to lack of success etc.

But have a look at St.Kilda 1 premiership in 150 years, basically irrelevant now. How many coaches in how many years? Nobody wants to go there for any other reason than money.

Poor Brett, seemed like he was a committed person who was a good coach, now they start again looking for a new coach. Good luck to anyone coaching that club.

Yeah but at least the saints have a bit of self awareness about themselves.

Just when North and Essendon are the laughing stock of the AFL, St Kilda say hold my beer and hey presto!
we only sacked a coach, not a whole footy dept nor did our recruiters resign en-mass mid-season, we have a ways to go before we get to North level

Why would anyone want to coach this club.

Look at some of the names that fronted up for them in round 23. Paton, Campbell, Lienert, Kent, Butler.

Their one shining light is Max King, but when your next best thing is Marcus Windhager who cares.

They can’t even start a new rebuild for another 12 months. What a disaster.

Christ.

Whilst it hasn't stooped to the new lows of Hawthorn, and Essendon of the last decade, St.Kilda are probably financially and performance wise the worst run club in the league over a 60 year period.

It's indefinately on a road to nowhere.

Says the guy whose team crapped their pants at the business end of the season

he always looks like he's had a hard night. Perhaps health has been a consideration (the changes to the nose).

The same clubs keep making the same mistakes and continue to be irrelevant to the competition as a whole.

Just another club destined to forever be a Melbourne based also ran in a crowded marketplace that peak into the lower rungs of the eight before falling back again once they get handed a tougher draw the following year.

Home of the List Clogger was the Fox headline when discussing their trade period and now they sack the coach. Lethlean re-signed him three months ago, no pressure there? Footy Dept will be a bit light on for funds in 2023 having to pay out Ratten.

Now off for the sugar hit of a new coach - woohoo!

No way some of the main StKilda players weren't involved in Rattan's sacking. The review must have definately reported this.

Quite frankly, Ratts has always been a mess of a Coach. Just a mess. Everyone is supposed to like Ratts as a "good bloke". But he is, and has always been a mess of a Coach.

StKilda's mistake was signing him. StKilda's huge mistake was re-signing him.

Lethlean is equally a mess of a Footy Mgr and now CEO. He also must go.

Carlton won 39 games in the 6 years before they appointed Ratten.
They went 60-59-1 under him. 10, 13, 11, 15, 12 win seasons (not sure what the breakdown was in the last season as he was sacked midway through it).
This came after 5 seasons in 6 where they recorded 4 or fewer wins.

Not sure on what score anyone could say he was a ‘mess’ at Carlton.

I’m comfortable with the trajectory of my club.

If you’re happy with the Saints future and this decision, good for you.

Most of us are.

Most of us also don't understand why he was extended.

The timing of this is terrible... after trade period, after other recent coaching appointments.

The club almost certainly has someone tapped up ready to go, just not sure who.

Can't help but feel for Ratten – their list really doesn't have the talent to exceed the rungs of mid-table mediocrity. If you realistically break it down:

A-graders: Steele, Sinclair
Potential A-graders: King, Marshall
B+-graders: Crouch, Gresham, Wilkie
B-graders: Ross, Hill, Howard, Higgins, Battle, Membrey, Billings
C+-graders: Butler, Clark, Coffield, Jones, McKenzie
C-graders and below: Everyone else
Young guns: Windhager, Wanganeen-Milera, Owens

I'm trying not to be too harsh with my assessment of the players above, but the list simply doesn't have the talent to compete, and I don't think the young guys coming through will take them to contender-level, as there's just not enough high quality talent coming through.

It's an indictment on their list strategy over the last few years – they tried to rush their rebuild by overpaying drastically for players who were never going to be anything more than B-graders, and they doomed themselves for fighting for the bottom-half of the eight at best.

It's a list management issue at St Kilda, not a coaching one. Thankfully, they seemed to give up on their strategy of past offseasons during this year's trade period, but I still would've liked to see them make a proper effort to cull some of the ageing players so that they could bottom out and rebuild properly.

That all being said, I don't know what's going on behind the scenes. Maybe bottoming-out just isn't financially viable for them, and they're stuck between a rock and a hard place.

These external/internal reviews may seem like a good idea, and long term that may be the case, but short term they are sending clubs into self-destruct mode.
