Review Rd 10 Port vs Collingwood

Yeah, whatever we gained in '20 in terms of grinding out good wins is gone. This sucked, and we've sucked for weeks. Haven't felt confident since the Richmond game.

Can't even say I walked out of that game feeling all that confident, considering what occurred the week prior. It felt to me like one of those out of the box "make a statement" games at the time and it's really looking like that now.
The plus side is if we can beat Freo (I'm not pencilling in wins against any opponent anymore) we get to the bye at 8-3, lick our wounds, and prepare for what will be a MUCH tougher second half of the year.

Whatever happened to our tactic of having Marshall lead up the ground and deliver inside 50? We did it pretty often in the first few games and it worked a treat. It gave him touch when he was struggling in the forwardline, he gave us elite delivery into the 50 and it stretched the oppositions tall defenders leaving more space for Charlie and Georgie. Seems like Todd could use this switch now more than ever.

It seems to happen every yeaar where our forward structure looks moderately functioning in the first few games before we revert to the bomb-long-and-hope bullshit. Dixon frusrates the shit out of me but if we set him up properly he should still be kicking 45+ a year, not this insufferable brand of footy. All tied to Ken/Bassett.

If we are being honest about it, that we came back from 4 goals down this week was more the result of Collingwood's problems than our effort. While the last quarter (and parts of the third) was good, the rest of the game felt like one of those ones where all we could do was keep the margin at the first quarter deficit. Even the third, when we drew level, felt like the second quarter against the Dogs. The difference was Collingwood's lack of quality and inability to move the ball quickly, outside the first and last few minutes of the game.

Also, on our forward entries, while the forward line is awfully coached, the midfield has to take some of the blame. There was a moment early in the game where someone (I can't remember who) had the ball on the wing, Robbie led perfectly and had 5m on his opponent. The ball carrier kicked it over Robbies head to a contest. Gray gave whoever it was a real bake after that. Then there was Boak streaming out of the centre and blazing away to the square rather than spotting someone up.

What an ordinary game. Good fight back in the last qtr to win.
Thought Farrell was great in the first half, hope he can bring that every week, McKenzie, Allir, Jonas and Jones good. SPP good last qtr.
Dixon has struggled this year but I love his effort, how good was that smother, huge team lifting moment.
Take then win and move on but we need to get a lot better.

my take from all of this is, we need to bank these wins. keep in touch with the top 4 no matter how ugly it is.

Then pray to good we get some troops back in time. Butters Duursma and Lycett would have made a massive difference. lesser extent Clurey only because i thought McKenzie was very good. and not to mention getting Rozze and Houston back to 100%

We are really lucky to have such a great backline. Well manned well coached and disciplined. McKenzie and Jones drop in for first games and it still looks great.
SPP played excellent, brings that hunger and intensity we lack at times

Honestly why did it take a half of football for Ken and the coaches box to realise that we needed to take the game on and put pressure on Collingwood? Once we did that they wet the bed. Was honestly one of the most frustrating games of football to watch and I don't even feel any joy in getting the win

True of every game against the 'lower' teams.
Frustrating as hell.

Nah. Beating them no matter what is sweet, especially with everything leading up to the game.
It may have been ugly and frustrating but losing would have been much, much worse.

Dane Swan posted on twitter whether one point in a quarter was good enough (presume he means the first qtr?).

It was absolutely pate
hetic, no question whatsoever, and a blight on the club.
However, it may well have been the point that won us the game!

It also meant that we only needed 3/4 of the game to match Collingwood's score for the whole game.

That first quarter score was the difference.

Holy sh*t, only watched the game now, after that first quarter I surely wasn't expecting a 1 point win. Best on ground for me were the seagulls, game itself was scrappy as fu** but I will take the win.

If only we had the commitment of an MCG seagull! They even installed wire to ward them off but they still dodge it to get on the ground.

You know what, the team might let us down on a frustratingly regular basis but when I see Port supporters in pretty much every game I am so glad that's my team. By far the most vocal of any I've seen in the AFL, no ****s given, in any ground, no matter where we play

You'd have thought after nearly a decade in the chair and failure after failure of trying to squeeze life out of a footballing corpse that Hinkley would have moved on from this idea of "if I just leave him in the side maybe this will be the week that Player A produces like he did as a 24 year old".
As a club man I have loved Hamish Hartlett, but this nonsense of carrying players in the side who aren't up to it when better options sit idle is really messing with things. It has to stop.
If option B is in better form than option A then it should be "bye bye option A".
I wouldn't even be giving Hamish a spot until Clurey returns.

So, we are a 25% better team than Collingwood.

Lol love the dodgy maths but head to head we are actually one of only three clubs with a positive record against them along with Brisbane and West Coast. Obviously a lot of VFL flat tracking with subsequent Colliwobble action in that data set though.

Dixons last quarter was huge, turned the game with his smother creating a goal and then ruck work to Wines.

Didn’t have a great 4 quarter game but get around the big fella for competing and turning it round!
Went back and watched the last Quarter.
Charlie Dixon's last quarter was awesome and he won us that game.
I know he has a few critics but not sure there is any other Key Forward in the game that puts his body in the line of Fire as much as he does.
