Link to the proposed Referendum, from the Referendum Working Group:
(Edited 6 April 2023)

These are the words that will be put to the Australian people in the upcoming referendum as agreed by the Referendum Working Group (made up of representatives of First Nations communities from around Australia):

"A Proposed Law: to alter the Constitution to recognise the First Peoples of Australia by establishing an Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Voice. Do you approve this proposed alteration?"

As well as that, it will be put to Australians that the constitution be amended to include a new chapter titled "Recognition of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Peoples".

The details would be:

The Prime Minister has committed to the government introducing legislation with this wording to parliament on 30 March 2023 and to establishing a joint parliamentary committee to consider it and receive submissions on the wording, providing ALL members of Parliament with the opportunity to consider and debate the full details of the proposal.

Parliament will then vote on the wording in June in the lead up to a National Referendum.

The ANU has issued a paper responding to common public concerns expressed in relation to the proposed Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Voice here:

Summary details of the key points from this paper may be found in Chief post here:
The Uluru Statement from the Heart:
Not specifically No. In any case it does not form part of the Referendum proposal.

Seeing as things have gotten a bit toxic in here, let's try to return things to a more civil tone.

The following will result in warnings to begin with, and if said behaviour continues will be escalated:
  • referring to another poster as racist without direct provocation.
  • dismissing or deriding another poster's lived experience.
  • personal attacks or one line posts designed solely to insult or deride.

You might notice that the final rule is from the board rules. Thought we should probably remember that this is against the rules in case it's been forgotten.

Let's play nicely from here, people.

The best post in this whole thread! I'm sure the inner city lefties on big footy will tell you exactly why your community needed it though!

Were they inner city no voters out of touch too? Isn’t that the whole point of the voice?

We’re we out of touch when we overwhelmingly voted that the monarchy has no place in modern australia

Both referendums beaten by your ‘in touch’ people

People think I am Aboriginal because of looks. I'm not. My wife is part Aboriginal but is very white. Our kids look Aboriginal because of me lol.

I am in favour of recognition of first people in constitution. And think people in communities should have say in their future. But don't think voice should be in constitution. I don't like assumption that anyone part Aboriginal will always have disadvantage and need permanent extra group in Canberra.

I voted no and wife and kids voted yes but we didn't have big fight about it.

Who is making that assumption???? The voice isn’t all about negative things … it was also about conserving a culture …
You basically just voted against a permanent voice for those communities …. Lucky you and your family don’t have to live in them.

Maybe not racist but boy…..some of the reasons people gave for a no vote…they don’t sound logical
unconscious bias.

Out of curiosity, for those defending either voting no or the no campaign, what do you view as the major downside of voting Yes? Please try to not use "it could of" or "it might have", I mean real things of substance.

I get people want to argue why voting Yes wouldn't be as positive as some would have hoped, or that constitutionally there are grey areas etc. etc., but I'm really struggling to see the convincing argument as to why voting yes in the referendum would have been a bad thing.

Yes campaign screwed the pooch here.
If your going to scream bloody murder and throw the racist tag around because someone disagrees with you, well.....
you see to me the only ones doing that are the insecure no crowd, it's a projected strawman persecution complex. The only ones talking about 'racist' or 'racism' are the no crowd. Frustrated into confession because the yes crowd aren't taking their childish bait.

On a side note Jacinta is the voice Australian needs for reconciliation and she should be in control on aboriginal funding.
She doesn't even think colonisation caused problems. She's a shill for the LNP.

A new stolen generation appears to be one of them.

After 10 years in power - the LNP propose to reform the Indigenous Affairs portfolio...from Opposition.

Wouldn't have anything to do with Ms Price trying to capitalise on her new found political stardom would it? The Voice Australia actually needs.

And rest assured the 'surprises' planned will align with what the LNP believe will geive them the best political currency with the electorate.

A bloke I work with was worried about Toyota Landcruisers running out of fuel.

No one is actually saying this at all across social media or the news. But yeah keep passing your opinions as facts.

The left don’t work with facts, facts rarely suit their narratives. That was clear for the entire referendum.

The inability by some to accept the outcome of democracy without spewing venom and taking the trying desperately to take the moral high ground in this thread is comical.

Personally I hope Jacinta Price joins the lower house and runs for PM. The soy sipping social justice warriors would have no idea what to do and no way to denigrate here without revealing their true nature.

We already call her out for her ridiculous lies. Try again.

Britney Spears What GIF

I believe I speak for everyone when I say: What the... ?

You know that old story, where a BRAND NEW Toyota Landcruiser was given to an Indigenous person. They drive it until it runs out of fuel and leave it stranded by the side of the road.

Reckon I first heard this 25 years ago. Story seems to get updated each year in line with Toyotas drive away price and CPI increase.

No, not really, for the most part was it.
I voted yes, but was against the referendum as a whole.
Because either way, its divisive BS.
And what do we have now?
Exactly that.
Would have been the same had yes got up.

LOL quality post. What ownage! This own goal is embarrassing at best.
We already call her out for her ridiculous lies. Try again.
Have you called out Pearson, Langton, Mayor Albo etc out for their ridiculous lies yet?

The only ones talking about 'racist' or 'racism' are the no crowd.
Perhaps look at social media for endless posts calling it "the racist and divisive Voice".

You will be shocked.
