Link to the proposed Referendum, from the Referendum Working Group:
(Edited 6 April 2023)

These are the words that will be put to the Australian people in the upcoming referendum as agreed by the Referendum Working Group (made up of representatives of First Nations communities from around Australia):

"A Proposed Law: to alter the Constitution to recognise the First Peoples of Australia by establishing an Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Voice. Do you approve this proposed alteration?"

As well as that, it will be put to Australians that the constitution be amended to include a new chapter titled "Recognition of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Peoples".

The details would be:

The Prime Minister has committed to the government introducing legislation with this wording to parliament on 30 March 2023 and to establishing a joint parliamentary committee to consider it and receive submissions on the wording, providing ALL members of Parliament with the opportunity to consider and debate the full details of the proposal.

Parliament will then vote on the wording in June in the lead up to a National Referendum.

The ANU has issued a paper responding to common public concerns expressed in relation to the proposed Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Voice here:

Summary details of the key points from this paper may be found in Chief post here:
The Uluru Statement from the Heart:
Not specifically No. In any case it does not form part of the Referendum proposal.

Seeing as things have gotten a bit toxic in here, let's try to return things to a more civil tone.

The following will result in warnings to begin with, and if said behaviour continues will be escalated:
  • referring to another poster as racist without direct provocation.
  • dismissing or deriding another poster's lived experience.
  • personal attacks or one line posts designed solely to insult or deride.

You might notice that the final rule is from the board rules. Thought we should probably remember that this is against the rules in case it's been forgotten.

Let's play nicely from here, people.

Yep, they are using electronic rolls for pre-polling.

If someone did try to vote more than once or vote under another person's name, they would more than likely get caught. Not only it is electoral fraud, but they end up being classed as a "designated voter" to be watched and scrutinised at all future elections and referendums to prevent them trying to cheat ever again. Meaning they would need to do a declaration vote every single time and witnessed by a senior electoral officer (a DRO or OIC) at the voting centre.

Plenty of people calling talkback yesterday saying they were being manually marked off as always, there were only 2, one in Mildura and the other in an outer Melbourne suburb who said they had been marked off on a computer.

And later on, the AEC scans and compares those manual pages.

It's not an issue. Nobody thinks its an issue bar some nutters.

I hate that the No campaign assumes Australians are stupid, and are encouraging stupidity.

Either that, or they really did only just learn how elections work.

Today's cynical bullshit was that if someone votes twice then both will count.

Yep... just like every single election we've ever run.

Was that about the postal vote **** yo by the AEC? Apparently people were getting 2 ballots sent out.

Although the AEC said when they scan the second one it’d register they’ve already voted and be discarded?

The rolls are all scanned.
So if you went to five different polling places and voted at each one ( or someone else did in your name ) they would know at the end that the vote was wrong by 5 votes.
If that was the only discrepancy in that electorate ( and in reality there are heaps ) no-one would care unless the count came to within 5 votes.
If it did its back to the polls for that electorate, but in reality most seats are a much bigger margin.
And like you said the name becomes a designated voter after that.

You could do it maliciously i guess , organise a heap of people to vote in the name of someone they didn't like just to annoy them.
With the electronic rolls (each issuing point has its own laptop), they do synchronised scans across the AEC network at the end of each day before each laptop is shutdown to pick up any discrepancies.

Any elections i've worked on have still had a lot of manual folders on election day.

Here's how I would do it.

Scan the details of the voter.

If they have not voted, send the ballot unopened into a ballot box. At that point the ballot becomes irretrievable as it is now impossible to connect it to an indiviudual.

Else discard the ballot, or put it aside for perusal and possible criminal referral or at least investigation.

Count the ballots at the appropriate time.

Do you think there's going to be an I'm Spartacus moment at the next election when we all go get ticked off as Allan Endersz and write on the ballot I'm Allan Endersz and have the ballot cast as informal?

A big pile of I'm "Allan Endersz" ballots in every informal pile.

What a plonker. Thinks he's going to go to the High Court to get his vote counted when it's sitting in an informal bin somewhere no-one will ever see it again.

What is it with No voters being simpletons?

My cooker friend on FB was saying it was just another power grab by Govt. I asked how that could be true when it's Govt establishing a Voice to provide advice with no power. He didn't answer.

No wonder they're making such a fuss about their No voters being unable to understand the constitution or how to write "No" instead of "X".

I might start a cooker rumour that writing "X" is actually the only way to get your vote counted as a "No" but the Govt wants to hide it from you.

I just voted. The No guy tried to hand me a pamphlet, I called him a racist, he said no not at all. Then i said something else. I voted in a church with a crucifix in the voting room and thought what right do all these people have to vote on an Indigenous issue, it should be only Indigenous people voting.
I then left and thanked the two old Yes pamphlett ladies and told the No guy to have a shit day.
A bad experience .

Well that's w***er behaviour if I'm being honest

You can always buy Crypto from Allan Endersz if you like.

Why do i get a mental picture of something like this.

You'd be making the incredibly naive assumption that Dutton and Price actually care about all of this one bit and this isn't just virtue signalling to the crowd of bigots they've unleashed and that they're happily playing up to now.
I don't think they care hence the comment about point scoring and more bureaucracy

There's actually people handing out " HOW TO VOTE " cards for the referendum at early voting places lol.

Like, i know how to spell, you *en numpty 🙄

Just tipping petrol on a fire.

Not only that the officer in the polling centre explains it. A HTV card would say the exact same thing.

LOL @ this d*ckhead cooker trying to be a smart@rse and boasting about it on twitter/X but not realising he made his vote informal by stupidly writing his name on the ballot paper and identifying himself 🤪. Well done on wasting your vote, moron! 🤣

where did you collect your medal?

Yeah but, you're likely just making everyone uncomfortable.
No one else heard, he was standing by himself, it was just between him and me and maybe it taught him something.
I didn't make a scene, it was a private conversation.
