St Kilda Head of Football Chris Pelchen said the deal was in line with the club’s list management strategy.

“Obviously the decision to part ways with Rhys was a difficult one but we feel that it provides mutual benefit to all parties. St Kilda Football Club is committed to strategically build its player list and remains determined to increase its opportunities at the top end of the AFL National Draft,” he told SAINTS.com.au.

“To hold three selections inside 22 following on from three selections inside 19 last year represents a clear direction of our commitment to develop the list with young talent.

“Rhys departs the Saints on good terms and we wish him every success for the future.”

i wouldnt stress on stanley is a really good trade and we could end up with wright anyway to replace him. also i think hickey will be spending more time down fwd to rest his knee and ease the workload. we'll have white back there as our project player

resting rucks can be picked up at anytime. they tend to leave if they arent getting game time

My favourite part about this trade is that it fulfils our ambition (3 top 25 picks), we keep number 1/Petracca AND we keep Steven and Armo on board to lead our midfield. And all for what is, after all these years, still an unproven player. Very happy with this trade.

They might get 25 hitouts each but we are a man short in the forward line…
We can't carry 2 lumbering ruckmen in the side at the same time.

So shouldn't this be the scenario

1) Our forward line - notoriously lazy except for Roo (now Milne is retired) needs to actually get to position and not leave it always for Roo to lead two or three times.

Membrey, Lee, White, with Hickey resting forward need to work much much harder.

2) Our mids, who were smashed last year, need to step up and contribute to the scoring. Billings, Dunstan, Armo and Jack (hopefully with Petracca) need to step up their scoring.

But first thing is to get their hands on it. We could have, Roo, Buddy, and Tex Walker in the forwards, but it would be useless if the mids aren't getting the pill.

Thought the Hawks went alright with two lumbering ruckmen in their team this season.

Just chatted to a Crows friend and work. Astonished we got away with this deal. Wishes they'd offered Shaun McKernon to the Cats, they might have got 14, if they're that crazy.

he still has the chance to develop into an extremely good player .
But he also has the chance of another 5 yrs of very slow development , constant injuries and being in & out off the team.
Im not going to lose any sleep over trading him for a good pick.
Good luck for the future Rhys:thumbsu:
And hopefully even better luck for pick 21:thumbsu::thumbsu:

I'm not overly happy to trade Stanley out to be honest.. Yes he has been frustrating, but he finally has got on top of his injury issues and is starting to show some of the potential he has got..
A 23 year old at his size and pace is extremely rare, and I have a feeling he will end up a pretty good afl player..
How many times was he clear on a lead and ignored this year?
He is at the age where talls tend to really mature, and I feel a combination of ruck and fwd suits him best.. Anyway he is gone now, I will look on with interest and hopefully he has a good (not too good) career at the Cats.. It will be interesting to see whether pick 21 is part of another deal or we plan on taking it to the draft. Time will tell, could be a hectic next 24 hrs

they didn't, they kept dropping one, McEvoy was only brought back in because Mike Pyke was the opponent.

I'm not unhappy or happy with the Stanley trade. It totally depends on who slides to 21. If we can get another Acres or Dunstan then it will be a win, but my hesitation is that I'm not sure what the chances of that happening are. If Carlton take McKenzie with 19 then we might stand a chance of getting someone good at 21.

I do like having back-to-back picks. They are always fun.

I look forward to following Stanley's development. The only way this trade is a big failure is if Stanley explodes into an amazing player from 2018-2020 and the kid we pick up is a dud. On the up side - if he fails we get to bathe in the tears of Cats fans!

Hale who played mostly forward kicks goals though. I've seen nothing from Longer or Hickey to suggest either of them could be a Hale but that's fine, still plenty of time to find another forward/ruck. Who knows, it might even be Bruce who becomes that. Roughead spent a year playing as a relief ruckman so anything is possible!

Ceglar and Hale played the majority of games together, Hale the only one that was somewhat dangerous up forward. I reckon it's within the realms of possibility that Hickey ends up being able to contribute a goal a game like Hale did.

Midfield should be our priority.

You're very keen joff, quoting a post that I deleted within 10 seconds…

At any rate, you appear to be struggling to grasp the ruck/forward role. If you are talking about Hawthorn, you may recall that when McEvoy came in - Ceglar went out. Hale is a dangerous forward & they are fortunate that Roughhead can also go into the ruck if necessary.

The rest of your post is pretty unrelated to having a dangerous forward who can go into the ruck and compete at a competent level.

Carlton taking McKenzie at 19 is a good thing for us.

Let's relive his time at the Saints with this highlights montage

;)

Honestly, all the best to him. I wouldn't have traded him, but like I said earlier in the other thread, we're not going to get where we want to go by sitting on our hands.

I reckon he'll continue become a consistent performer at Geelong, like he was showing this year. I hope that we use pick 21 well.

Watching that video makes me feel sick, knowing what's about to happen :(

Geelong board having a mini meltdown as they realise thy have traded Varcoe and Christensen for Clark and Stanley.

Talk about risk taking!

They will lose Hunt from their midfield as well and the likes of Bartel, Kelly and Stevie J are all a year older... Could be hitting that cliff pretty soon!
