Ricky Ponting to retire after Perth Test

I'll go off on a different tangent.

Not only was he one of the best batsmen of our generation, he was, in my eyes, the best fielder I've ever seen.

Do yourself a favour, there's a youtube clip of most of his run outs throughout his career, it goes for 45 minutes ffs.......

Probably the equal to Warne in my eyes, as the best Australian cricketer of this generation.

My all time favourite cricket player.

Sad to see him go but it's the right decision.
If he scores a century in his last test I'll spend the whole night making my privates red raw.

I assume the selectors basically gave him the tap, this is a good thing really he wasn't going to make runs in england the way he was playing and this way he gets the farewell he deserves and a young bat gets the sri lankan series to try and make a name for themselves before england.
He was very adamant that he still had the full backing of the selectors, captain and coach, so don't tarnish him by posting such rubbish.

Absolute legend, and Aussie cricket simply won't be the same without him.:(

A bit like Tim Cahill towards the end of his Everton career, a legend who is past his best but I still didn't want to see him go.

Congrats on a great career Punter, so many great memories of him playing for Australia that I will cherish.

Also wished he could play one more test in Hobart so he could finish off at his home state and have the record.
Just shows how selfless the guy is though. Could have easily demanded that and would have highly likely been given it, but he has put the team first as always.:thumbsu:

I'd like for him to be an extra fielder reserve for the Ashes in England, so he can catch or run out one of their key batsmen like their fielding coach did to him.
So is that why there was such a fuss over that dismissal? Never actually heard that part of it.

Aside from his phenomenal batting, I think one of the best things Ponting did for Australian cricket is remain the side when he stood down as captain. He has been invaluable in assisting Michael Clarke and ease into the position. A great career and a great player and most of all a team player down to his laces.

Fantastic to see him step out with grace. Not that his legacy was every really going to be tarnished, but reality is that he hasn't been near his best for awhile now and it's nice that he has realised that and is stepping out on his own terms.

Certainly the best Australian batsman I've seen. Champion of the game, deserves every plaudit that will be thrown at him over the next few days. Hope he bats with abandon and freedom of mind in his last test, the standing ovation he'll get will be something special, even on TV.

A glorious batsman. And an utter privilege to have seen him bat.

Debuted at this ground and got a completely dodgy LBW to be deprived of a century. One more ton would not only be a fitting send-off it would even up that decision, in my mind at least.

Punters stats from 1st Jan 2002 until 1st Jan 2007.

61 tests, 6333 runs, 24 hundreds, average of 70.34. Just insane. At his best he was better than anyone else in the world including Sachin.

His prime was probably only second to Bradman, he was just on another level in those 5-6 years.

Have watched said clip- it really is amazing viewing.

If you're a fan of good fielding, by the way, try and find yourself some footage of Roger Harper. He did things that were simply not human.

Farewell Ricky, you're the best Australian batsmen I've seen and one of the best I've seen, full stop.

You know what i mean you just dont expect an international sports star to come from here and be that good

I know, I was just pretending to be offended. We have a few international sportspeople with strong careers though. Daniel Geale is one of the best boxers the country has have ever produced, Marcus Ambrose, Matt Goss and Richie Porte are very good cyclists, and Boony!
