AFL Toast RND 5: Win Against The Dogs

i reckon subbing of sanders instead of weightman really cost them, bontempelli was off in the second half & had little impact on the game, subbing off an inside mid like sanders for a back flank/outside mid like dale was such a bad decision.

Couple points from last night
  • we are way better midfield when Caldwell is playing on ball.
  • we will be a much better side when Reid, Ridley etc are back and we don’t have to play laverde. Simple can’t defend, juh is faster/ bigger jump and he made no effort to change his defensive tactics all night.
  • our forward pressure is much better when we actually play 3 small forwards. Even though they don’t get a lot of the ball, we structure up way better.

We certainly can butcher an inside 50.

The frustration is that if we do get it in quick and to advantage, Langford and Stringer are absoloutely lethal!
Yep when we get it right it really works. Though we got better with the transition and positioning defensively mid way through the second quarter but just need to gain more on the opportunities we create. Against the Saints I though we ****ed up just more opportunities than they kicked points.

Congrats on the win, guys.
We were pathetic.

Enormous respect for Darcy Parish going to Libba's aid when he collapsed.

Sportsmanship personified 👍

makes me proud that it was his first thought, nothing else in the moment except making sure that everything was okay. it was alarming to see and ill reiterate that i genuinely hope that he’s alright.

There’s no way Libba collapsed because of his ankle. They show footage behind the goals and there’s zero wrong with his ankle. If he doesn’t go into concussion protocol then AFL is taking the piss.

As for Naughton they should put back in defence. Frees up more space for Darcy and JUH. Anyway enough about the Doggies

it's alarming that beveride said that, anyone who's ever had a bum ankle knows you don't hold your head when you collapse... or fall the way he did.

So if it is concussion who gets rubbed out? Stringer?

They should put Naughton onto our list.

watching the replay now, i'll write down anything and everything that stands out to me.

QUARTER 1
cannot be overstate the amount of physical pressure that zach brings to our game. he was a demon last night hunting the ball and the opposition.
goldy started the game very well and set the tone exceptionally right from the get go. very professional performance.
our basic skill level was really, really good. hitting lots of kicks we'd generally **** up.
i know it's been said a chunk, but the difference in bulldogs when bontempelli was taken out of the game was amazing. durham did an amazing job in the second half.
at 11:41~ in the first quarter, nic cox hit one of the best handballs i've seen from him, perfectly into the lap of stringer & an absolute improvement over last weeks performance.
stringer has some fantastic field kicking skills when he uses them, it's quite impressive to see
harry jones puts in the effort to not only do the big stuff like presenting and marking outside of f50, but also all the little 1 percenters that we've lacked consistency in.
while we're still getting killed on the turnover, we did work much harder trying to defend it, kudos goes directly to jye caldwell, he was a physical beast and worked tirelessly to try and cover the gaping maws that exist in our defense through the guts
our forwards are really unselfish in the first half, stringer and langford both gave off difficult but kickable goals to teammates in easier positions to kick from.
QUARTER 2
while our second quarter started poorly, as the bulldogs did their best to emulate what port did last week, we had a set plan to try and counter it which eventually begun working.
goldy just keeps on physically monstering english.
we're very lucky that they didn't utilise the height mismatch between redman and darcy
ben mckay played extremely well throughout the first half
kelly, pidge and dyson all did well in keeping weightman irrelevant in the game
gresh had some good moments in the second playing up in the back 50/centre, started poorly but he worked himself into the game nicely i think
cox started getting physical in the second, really great to see him getting involved in contests instead of just sticking just outside.
can't be stated enough just how good our kicking for goal has been this year. lot's of goals in the past that we'd miss from tight angles or range have been slot, it's honestly kind of shocking how much it's elevated
after the tight start to the quarter, we really built into a counter attack that nullified the past 12~ minutes of excellent bulldogs defense.
while i think we all loved stringers spear tackle into libba, but i think zach demolishing adam treloar late in the second was a turning point in the game.
our defensive positioning outside our f50 was also streets ahead of where it was last week, was great to see.
ultimately the extreme selfishness of the bulldogs forwards really helped us through the game,
i feel like martin will always been seen as wasted playing in the backline because his f50 delivery is silver service. really good kicks into our forward line consistently and it's what we've been missing this year going in.
our tackling was really solid all night, another improvement from last week, too.
it's extremely apparent to me that english preferred finding cheap possessions exiting the d50 for the bulldogs than providing a genuine option going up the ground.
THIRD QUARTER
our ground ball skills were really good starting in the quarter.
harry jones finds himself in a consistently great position inside our 50 for the past few weeks. he's been great at doing everything, not just what's expected of him
hobbs certainly didn't have his best game but i think at moments he performed reasonably good. he just needs to tighten up on the basics and trust his instincts instead of second guessing himself
harry jones has legitimate closing speed, the chase down tackle on ed richards was pretty amazing given richard's leg speed.
i think draper had a pretty decent game, much better than last week. i do have to wonder if he's still being hampered by a slight injury as he's lost a bit of his jumping ability as has been identified by others so far this season.
our forward 50 entries have been pretty good overall during the game, no real fatal errors besides the usual stuff.
small patch in the third where ADJ did well to be in a great position to feed off some good disposal for teammates. i know i've already said that he doesn't have the physical tools yet to be like his dad but his disposal is excellent when required.
can't believe that langford also didn't give the ball back to stringer lmfao
i reckon that khamis had a good game, he might be someone we should chase in the future.
we've seen it a few times this year but stringer stilln has some absurd pace when he wants to sprint. he's been a genuine machine this season
defensively we have improved so much in this game than compared to our last two. our last 10~ minutes in the third has been extremely good and high pressure football
the amount of out of bounds on the full we were gifted doesn't fail to amuse me.

one of the stark differences just in this game is that all of the senior players sans ed richards disappeared constantly in the game, where as our players all stood up when we needed them to.

QUARTER 4

nothing i can say won't have been said so i won't do this one but goddamn does harry jones have good ass hands

Something that really stood out across the 4 quarters was the pressure. With increased pressure on the ball carrier, the amount of dump kicks the Dogs sent forward allowing us to break even if not win was huge.

Can see why / how a guy like Tom Stewart does as well as he does. Up the field makes his role easier. Get Ridley back into this side and watch our back k6 transform into a force

So if it is concussion who gets rubbed out? Stringer?
Nah legit tackle from Stringer. Someone mentioned there was a collision with Hind

I thought we'd be a very strong chance to be 1 and 4 by now, so pretty pleased with the w/l ratio.

Definitely need to give some credit to the coaching group for last nights result, particularly given the coaching group probably needed to take a fair bit of criticism for last week's debacle.

Other observations for me:

1. absolute team effort - even spread of contribution
2. whilst Davey didn't get a lot of stats, his pace and chasing helped our F50 pressure - I'd keep him in at Menzie's expense.
Hopefully ADJ can build on last night with some more exposure
3. Stringer is working hard both ways and his hit on Libba was glorious
4. The Captain is leading by example
5. The new recruits have improved us as a team - kudos to Scott and the list management group
6. The forward line is working well without 2MP - his return will be interesting in regards to how we set up

Looking forward to next week to see if we can back up last night's performance in Adelaide.
