Autopsy Round 1, 2018: St.Kilda v Brisbane

ROss very rarely seems to lose out when he goes head to head with top class midfielders. He probably doesn’t get enough credit for that.

Interesting stats, Ross had 10 CPs vs Beams 11,
but overall had 32 disposals at 78% ( 25 gooduns ) efficiency vs 26 at 62% ( 16 gooduns ).

They both had 7 inside 50's Beams taking a mark inside for a missed shot at goal.
Ross had 7 tackles, Beams 3.

However Beams won more clearances.

I am ad guilty as most of ball watching at games and really didnt see much of Paddy.

Seemed to spill some marks up the ground kicked a goal, could have had a second but handed off to Bruce and was instrumental in Stuv's second third qtr goal.

Did notice he was getting into a tonne of space in the third but the ball never got to him.

4th qtr didnt notice him except that the forward 50 was very open, so he was either under instructions to clear out or was on the pine.

Thought he generally had a shocker but could have had three instead of one and that would have been a pass.

We were on level three where you can see the game unfolding better, he was getting open but only when there were better options, you could see the players bringing the ball in thinking about giving it to him but then choosing the right options. He was often left alone late because others had run out the back and drawn the defence in.

It was a disappointing game from Paddy and I hope he gets on his bike this week and plays angry. His best footy was when he was playing like angry from the sting of criticism. Paddy is a fantastic kid and I hope he makes it, I was just disappointed in his effort over all but he can easily redeem himself this week.

At the end of Round 1:
  • Tim Membrey ranked equal 01st for marks inside 50
  • Nathan Brown and Jake Carlisle ranked equal 01st for disposal efficiency
  • Jack Billings ranked equal 02nd for behinds
  • Jack Billings ranked 02nd for score involvements
  • Jack Billings ranked 02nd for goal assists
  • Jack Steven ranked equal 03rd for marks
  • Jack Newnes ranked 05th for bounces
  • Jack Steven ranked equal 06th for kicks
  • Blake Acres, Seb Ross and Jack Steven ranked equal 09th for effective disposals
  • Billy Longer ranked equal 09th for free kicks against
  • Sebastian Ross ranked 10th for metres gained
  • Jack Newnes ranked equal 11th for kicks inside 50
  • Seb Ross, Jack Steven and Shane Savage ranked equal 11th for uncontested possessions
  • Jack Steven ranked 12th for disposals
  • David Armitage ranked equal 12th for centre clearances

As bad as Longer was he was picked on by the umps in that game, he was giving away frees when he was the one being manhandled.

I support reducing all ruck infringements - just let them go one on one survival of the fittest.

They should just let it go unless it's absolutely obvious. When they are making it technical to the point of not actually understanding what the free was for it's a bad call. There were a couple where Longer seemed to get held by the collar, pushed to the ground and then pull Martin on top of him as he fell. I couldn't see why it was a free against Billy.

Watched a bit of the third quarter last night... Hunter Clark, didn't notice watching it on tv on the day but he was excellent when he got it. He's big and hard, his skills are excellent - that was a very exciting first game from him. Can't wait to watch him develop this year.

I agree and watching him acquit himself against Rayner made me think that our man could be a real draft steal.

seems ross gets the tom mitchel treatment , gets a lot of the ball but doesn't hurt us - the media just doesn't want to say the guy is a a-grader.
looking good steven , ross and billings all a-graders and i'm pretty sure we will be talking about a few more a=graders by round ten.

Ross is a damaging player because his disposal is first class.

I still don't think he has as much killer instinct as players like Armo and Stuv. He's A grade but he needs to add a little extra to be elite. Jobe wasn't as good at the same age and drugs or not he got himself good enough take home a Brownlow. There is no reason Seb can't make himself into an elite player but still isn't quite there.

Crazy talk imo, Sinclair had a down game, plenty of credits in the bank and going to be one of our best.

It might make sense from a positional point of view. If Hunter gets put back again we are one down in the pressure forward spot and Sinclair lost his wing spot to Acres and was left to try to be dangerous with out an obvious role.

the thing with lonie is he battles to kick over 40m and has nowhere near the skills of sinclair , also with sinclair and acres on the wings we now how 2 great young stars that are going to be a force in many years to come .
don't worry about sinclair , he will show how good he is this friday

I didn't get to watch the game , but for me the big disappointments were Jack Steele, and Jack Sinclair.
Paddy , i didn't have such lofty expectations for ( but he would have been welcome to surprise me :/ ).
What's the best theory why the two Jacks fared so poorly?
You didn't watch the game but you list your disappointments. This is my disappointment... how can you call yourself a fan, not watch the game and list disappointments?

I went to the game and watched the recording when I got home. My impression at the game was Sincs was very poor... but watching the replay I realised Sincs effort couldn't be questioned. IMO he just had an off game. Was pretty fumbly, sloppy with disposal and a few things didn't go his way. I expect him to bounce back this week and I also expect our fans to watch the game.

It reminded me a bit of Gresham’s first game, as well Seb’s. Didn’t get it much but displayed something in his few disposals to make you think that he’ll be a cut above in time.

It might have been the fact that his disposals seemed to go where he wanted them to. He looks classy doing what ever he does.

True, with Seb’s few in his first game he displayed an ability to create space and think quickly in tight. Gresham showed that he fights harder than most to get a clean disposal away. Clark showed class, his frame is still light so he won’t be getting too many hard contested possessions yet, but he attacks the ball and is clean using it afterwards.

The only thing he hasn’t shown a lot of yet is long kicking. He looks like his instinct up the ground is to get the ball and give it to someone close and open.

I don't think lonie should be in the team (though he is a very good VFL midfielder), but he can definitely kick over 40. Has a good boot on him. Better than dunstan, koby, gresh - distance wise. Koby would kick it further if he didn't get so under the footy
