Brisbane fans are skeptical, to many false dawns in recent years. The team talks themselves up in pre season then fail to fire a shot. I recal round 1 2015, the last time i attended a game, big pre season, lots of hype we played Collingwood in front of 35k, it was all down hill after the 1st qtr and the season was a disaster. That leaves a bitter taste in many peoples mouths. It wil take a few wins to get people back to the Gabba.

Crowd for that game wasn't quite 35k - 31 250 officially which is still easily our best home crowd in a long long time. I wouldn't be shocked if we got 35k for Easter Thursday, as you'd think it leading into the holiday would help boost attendance a fair bit. Could be quite a few pies fans (even more than normal).

Could also be quite rowdy with no work the next day and a lot of people having 10 day breaks starting the Friday.

If we win 2 of the next 3 before it, I’d say we will have a massive crowd there.

There was a great question from Hammo (?) about a typical Brisbane win in the past requiring a huge Zorko/Rockliff game (30+ touches, multiple goals etc.) and comparatively Saturday had even contributors right across the board.

I voted for Oscar - not cause he dominated the game but because tactically moving him to lead ruck really changed the game in the second quarter. He's such a great asset to have when a match-up isn't going Stef's way. Love the signs from Bailey at HBF - can't wait to see him evolve there over the season. Also, keep forgetting Lyons is one of us. And when I recognise he is I just smile - unbelievable freebie.

1: BRISBANE DEFEATED WEST COAST BY 44 POINTS

This was the biggest Round 1 defeat handed to a reigning premier since Richmond lost to Carlton in 1981.

You could argue it was not entirely surprising given Brisbane’s pre-season form, key West Coast absences and an improving Lions home ground advantage, but consider where these clubs placed in 2018.

Brisbane won five games and finished 15th, while West Coast won the flag - the pinnacle. Not only did Chris Fagan’s men get the points on Saturday evening, but they did so in emphatic fashion, booting nine unanswered goals from early in the second term to the fourth quarter.

For 15th to defeat 1st in such a comprehensive manner was the upset of the weekend.

One last thing: a 20k crowd for the opening game v the reigning Premiers wasn't totally impressive. IMHO.

Hopefully better crowds will follow more wins.

Tbh I was expecting around 22 or 23 , but that was before I realized the Broncs had the Cowboys at home on Friday night.
I say that because my Cowboy Bronco fan mates would of come to the Lions game otherwise.
That's there biggest game for the season right there, so I think we would of maybe grabbed a few more on lookers if that wasn't the case.
It was West coast, and there wasn't too many of them there.
We averaged around the 18,000 mark last year , we'll do better than that.

Taking into account the caliber of the opposition how does this rank as far as impressive wins go since our semi win v the Blues in 2009?

Because of the size and style of the win and the anticipation of this not being another false dawn and being against the defending premiers I'd have it at number 1.

I haven't looked back over all our results but the other one that comes to mind is obviously the miracle on grass.

Holding the previous years premiers to two goals in three quarters has to be close to a record.

The other side of the coin: Hearn remains the best QB in the AFL by a mile.

His kick ins are invariably a bullet, often to near half way.

A rock around which GFs are won.

Just walked into a Hardware store and found 4 or 5 of the staff standing around talking about the Lions win on Saturday night!
I joined in the conversation and none of them really knew what they were talking about, but!.....
The boys are creating a ‘buzz’ and fans are coming out of the woodwork.
Good for membership and good for the game in Brisbane!
Got to keep the buzz going with a big win over Norf on the weekend!
Go Lions! 🦁

Any chance you can copy and paste the article as the article is blocked.

Article says that the game plan was for hippy to drag McGovern away from contests and for McStay to spill the ball and prevent intercept marks.

For those thinking that hippy will be dropped I imagine this game will be rated internally much higher than other games where he has kicked multiple goals.

Key bit from the article - in the grand final McGovern and Barass had 19 marks, they only had 8 on Saturday.
