Was very impressed with Zac Baileys clean hands off the ground that allowed him to clear the tackling pack

Growing up in the NT I'd imagine that he has had plenty of sessions in those sort of conditions. It certainly helps. Holding a ball in that sort of environment requires a really different approach. You sort of have to let the ball come to you more and cushion the impact, even off the ground. as soon as you go to grab it and force too much pressure between your hands it tends to get away from you. Its different to playing in the rain even as its a very different kind of moisture. Its kind of like comparing when you drive and its poured down its actually easier than when the road is just a little wet and gets bloody slippery.

Watching the game in more detail it was clear that a combination of some more experienced bodies as well as young guys increasing their core strength is really helping us. Tackles were sticking, guys were getting handballs off and arms free even when tackled on a more regular basis as well as affecting tackles where the opposition couldn't do the same. We've got more guys over the park who have that strength that enables them to get better outcomes more often, both offensively and defensively. It was especially noticeable up forward where McCarthy and Cameron in there really helped. Historically we've had to play some younger guys up there or a guy like Lewy who doesn't quite have that strength and its hurt our ability to affect the opposition in our forward half resulting in more slingshot play against us and putting our defence under a lot of pressure.

We cut off a lot of those plays where in the past a team like the eagles would have broken a tackle and got past the zone. Lets hope we can maintain it the rest of the season because it means our defence (which IMO has outperformed their experience levels significantly the last few year) can look to intercept more instead of just being under seige constantly, which will enhance our ability to rebound more effectively and quickly.

Also its amazing to me how Bastinac just seems to find space around the ground as an outlet. Even when he wasn't used there were a number of occasions where he was well clear of anyone. Now i'm unsure from the angles I had whether he was sacrificing his defensive positioning to do so and was rewarded in taking the risk by the fact we were winning the contested ball. The way our defence worked though I tend to think he wasn't and just managed to find it. Maybe the opposition just aren't to worried about him given he's not very high profile, but if he can continue it will certainly help our ball movement round a wing.

the biggest thing I noticed from the 2 quarters I watched was the massive difference in level of composure from previous seasons to work together to get out of tight situations.

Quite a few chains of handballs where players stopped propped, found a target who did the same until we found the open player with space to move it forward in a controlled manner.

Even last year we still often would try to do that but skills would let us down, or would try to run it out and get caught holding the ball, or just hack the ball forward at the first opportunity and see it came back at us very quickly.

So often now in AFL it is whoever can get the ball to the outside for quick ball movement that can lead to a score, doubly so when you are able to create a turnover from those tight situations (eg. dogs creating turnover to get to Bont for the sealer against Swans on the weekend).

Where does Tom Cutler sit with the Lions at the moment? Is he no longer best 22?
Contentious. Some like myself think he is, others don't and at the minute the match committee doesn't either.

Apparently had some injury concerns over the last couple of months, although played in the NEAFL practice match on the weekend.

I for one am hoping that he is next cab off the rank though.

Kudos to your boys, they played very very very well, totally played as a team and did all the hard work and deserved the big win, made the eagles look extremely second rate and forced them into errors, no other side has harassed us like that and defensive pressure, will definitely be what other sides will look to emulate.

We can't use hangover or limited prep, the conditions as an excuse, simply outplayed..... period!!!

You should get the job done again this week against North. Good Luck

My impression is that Cutler is probably going to be selected when the coaches feel he can really do his share of the defensive and contested stuff consistently. He has always stuck me as quite an outside player but with that goes a very big responsibility in the modern game to run extra hard defensively and get to contests at the right times.

Thanks for the reply.

Berry was the stand out for mine. A few times in congestion he was a raging bull and was rarely stopped. McCluggage aswell. Few times they busted through to get the hands free.

I haven't watched it again yet but my son has and he said the same ie. Berry was outstanding, you don't appreciate all he does while at the ground, inside beast who spreads at speed.

I selected McCluggage, Neale, McCarthy, Hodge & Robinson. I could have selected another 5, with Berry, Andrews and Cameron the next 3.
I was very impressed with the tackling and the constant pressure applied on the Eagles and the amount of times we forced errors. This Eagles team has a lot of 'big' bodies, so the tackling & pressure part of the game has given me great confidence that this will continue in the future.
Also pleased with McStay, especially his 2nd half - his pressure and attack on the footy was first class, especially against very good opposition.

Also, with Culter, Bundy, Lester, Taylor, Keays, Adams & Archie out of the side we are building not only great depth, but also pressure for spots.
Not to mentioned Skinner, who I really rate.

Go Lions
