Yeah I actually think we’ll be okay. Certainly not a top 4 contender given our lack of depth, so we have to balance performance with development, but it’s not as dire as some are suggesting. I think if we reflect on the round 1 2018 autopsy thread
Yeah in the same boat.

2018 was the infamous Mitchell with 50+, and Cox dropping sodas, the usual never want Cox in a Pies jumper would have been trotted out.

It definitely wasn't like the 2014 R1 70 point belting by Freo at home, or the 2016 R1 80 point belting by Sydney which was worse as Swan went down too.

Need to tweak some things and get more out of our guns, but the season is over play the kids crew, take a breath as we won't be the last team the Dogs midfield mauls.

I log on to read this humble brag

It's after midnight in Turkey

You've stripped down to your leopard print g-banger, oiled-up, posing for your webcam

We know you have Gimpy covered

He is Corey Gault to your Peter Moore
Walt.
Despite being the biggest d*ckhead BF has ever encountered you do stand as the greatest of the greats.
You f*cken like whore. You will even give me a compliment to get a cheap like.

Well was great to be back watching live footy at the G.....
Not sure what was more concerning, our performance at times or the Bulldogs inability to completely smash us, despite really dominating across the ground.
Thank god for D Moore, you just watch him pack mark, and think, would love to see him up forward. The perfect addition to our squad, would’ve been Alir Alir. Have him playing back, whilst moving Moore forward. Can only dream!
Can we keep Daicos as a wingman. His strength is his ability to use the footy, on both feet. I would be using him as our outrider, delivering the ball inside F50. Our inability to hit a lone or leading target last night was growingly frustrating.
Grundy, l am hoping that's not the form line for 2021. Just seems bereft of confidence and desire. Not sure what is going on there, but we need to see him lift his efforts ten fold. I would have had Cox play majority ruck, as l think he is the better tap ruckman.
We had our opportunities last night, but made some poor decisions with disposal, and just footy smarts. DeGoey playing on and snapping the point, whilst we had the free kick 15 metres out. Pendles dropped mark in the forward pocket. Just straight through the arms!
Not sure we need to bring in Cameron next week for Carlton, as they have Pittonet and Casboult, as their rucks, l believe. Grundy would need to pull his finger out, and l would use Cox more in the ruck. Unless Ruscoe out, Cameron in. I would also look at Macrae and McCreery, for mid and forward line roles, along with Sidey back.
Not sure we can guarantee WHE a game anymore, Ruscoe may have to make way, but l would give Henry another opportunity.
We do have improvement in us, Grundy, DeGoey (could have kicked 3), Daicos, Sier, Adams all had poor games. On top of that, we had a few that were just complete non factors.
I actually prefer Cox in the ruck to Grundy, but there is nowhere to hide Grundy when he is not rucking other than on the bench. Cameron could also probably do a better job than Grundy now, and would certainly be more effective up forward and even around the ground with his marking. Grundy is a shadow of the player from 2 years back. He looks slow and lumbering, highly unlikely to have the reflexes and ability to mix it with the midfielders or play effectively around the ground. It's daunting to think that this is the beginning of his 7 year contract. He will be like a giant albatross hanging around the collective team's neck throughout the time he is with us.

We have several players simply not up to the standard of AFL football. Ruscoe, despite his mother's humour, should never play another game. WHE is just awful as a player now. Sier is not the player I thought him to be in 2018. He has little on-field presence and just makes up the numbers at clearances. To think we got rid of two very talented players and one who at least would have been a running machine if played on the wing. All we got in return is mid range players who we like to fool ourselves are going to become regular contributors, even stars.

Elliott does very little these days and his selfish play that cost us a goal was unforgivable. Thomas does not contribute on the scoreboard and is a favourite whipping boy even when other players are worse than him on the night. Trouble is that we really don't have players pushing hard for the spots of our non-performing group.

I'd sack Buckley now if we had an assistant coach who looked remotely capable of taking over the reins for the rest of the year. The team looks sub standard in terms of talent, but also does not play a style of football suited to the personnel or liable to win us games. I suspect this is going to be a very long year for Collingwood supporters. The list managing and recruiting errors we have made are going to bite us big time this season.

I don't think I have ever felt less confident of our chances after the first game of a season.

We're not a finals side, but we're not a bottom 4 side either, which is very much what we looked like last night.

Even at our worst in previous years, we tend to win our fair share of the ball and a bit more besides. We just didn't get our hands on the ball enough against the Bulldogs. We can't judge a game plan on what we put up.

It's also hard to assess individual performance on a night when even Pendlebury looked ordinary. Players like Sier and T. Brown (e.g. peripheral, prospects) need to be persisted with.

On the other hand, the performance of WHE was downright insulting and cannot be ignored at selection.

Next week will be interesting. The other night Carlton played bold fast footy and really took it up to the best side in the comp. Their 25pt loss was much better than the rubbish we dished up last night. Dogs kick 3 early ones and straight away we shut it down and back into our ugly slow game, first priority not to get blown away. If the game is moving to faster more free flowing footy then we are going to be in a world of pain. Without naming individuals, I can think of about 15 who played last night who wouldn’t get near a game at Geelong, Rich, Bris or Port. I’d rather get smashed playing kids and developing a new game style than these so called honourable losses of 10 or 11 goals to 7.

We need a proper rebuild and the the two mentioned below should never don the black & white again if we are serious about building a sustainable force to challenge for flags-
Thomas & WHE just the most vanilla footballers.

Last night was a timely reminder of why i handed back my membership after 12 years last year. Entire club reeks of incompetence from the top down right now. We've had the same issues year in year out and have failed to address them year in year out. The fact that so many of us were unsurprised at the performance we laid out last night speaks volumes of the clubs inability to address holes.

- We've done nothing significant about our forward line since Cloke left
- We've not drafted anyone who's made an immediate impact to the team since DeGoey while Richmond blood kids picked in the 20-50 range who just slot straight into the system seamlessly
- We've clearly not addressed Grundys glaring weakness in hit outs to advantage, yet we spent $7m to keep him
- We have the same cultural problems causing distractions every year
- We've kept the same board and same coaching panel and same incompetent list management for years who have delivered us absolutely nothing

In essence, we're going backwards in every way as quick as any club in the league and don't seem to have a plan to reverse the trend.

Apologies for the uber-negativity, rant over.

Couldn't have said it any better. By rewarding this incompetence, we are parlty complicit in this. By not renewing memberships we would have sent a message to the club administrators to get their s**t right. That doesn't mean you don't love the club, just that you want change to happen and for it to happen now.

Why? They don't work hard, they dont spread, they win very little ball, they don't deserve games. We got absolutely demolished on the spread + out worked all game and these 2 were a big reason why

Brown has always worked hard, and Sier's work rate has improved. I don't hold high hopes for either but they are neither lazy nor the cause of our problems.

A lot of our players looked knackered last night, in my opinion, and didn't push back hard enough at various times.

I think we are seeing some of the effects of not being able to bring in quality free agents, as per other teams, over the past 2 to 3 years. We seem to be relying on basically the same group of players year after year. I think they all put the effort in to try and stay in contention, but it maybe getting a little stale.
The injection of youth last draft will change the dynamic of the team over this year hopefully and coming years, but now we have look at a couple of quality free agents coming in, particularly assisting in the midfield and up forward. We have traded out senior players to create cap space, so now is the time to get this done.
This year though, l will like to see Keane, Murphy, Macrae, McCreery, Bianco, Rantall and Wilson all given opportunities soon. McMahon and Poulter don't have size yet, but l would be tempted to give them a taste of senior footy as well.

Big props to Darcy Moore he was incredible. One of the best in the game. We might of dominated the stats but your defence kept you within a few goals, which can always be turned around with a short turn of momentum.

Great to see your supporters get behind Ads late in the game - was a nice moment for sport. Also props to your playing group for not targeting him and getting around him at the end of the game. Good to see sportsmanship win out 👍

Unlike other boards (including your team), we do not have 'No Opposition Supporters' threads however I think unless you have a comment on the game, you have had a fair go on our board and perhaps it is time you gave it a rest on what is and what is not about race/Hertier.

Agreed I'll finish up by saying Gary lyon was also arguing moore to the forward line.

It's makes sense to me, insertion of the best player to the problem area.

Even if it's questionable how often the ball will get there.

At least we‘ll have an early 1st Round draft pick this year...

The ball has to get to the forward line before considering Moore there. Even when the ball was heading there, delivery was either poor or no-one was there.

Our problem was in the centre, the Bulldogs should have buried us and the final margin was flattering to us. It is going to be a very long year.

C’mon Maggie, it’s only round 1, we will get better.

We did that because we will be getting Nick Daicos.

If we kept it, we would have been forced to use it on him. By trading it (and making sure we have enough points), we are still about to get him and were able to utilise it in a trade. It's probably a little more complex than that, but close enough.

Daicos is expected to go in the top few.
Like all these things there is a risk to it though and after tonight that risk grew.

Nick Daicos looks great apparently but hasn’t played any U18’s yet so is slightly unknown. If he ends up being say a pick7 instead of a pick 3 and we end up finishing 12th so get pick 6 we will have given away the sixth best kid in the draft for nothing much when we could have got that kid and Daicos.

club is betting on that sort of senario not occurring

I haven't given up. Was just saying that need Moore on the backline but would love to have two of him.

Each to their own mate. For me, its more about my personal values and beliefs no longer aligning with that of Collingwood's, and losing belief in the direction of the club.

I believe that financially supporting a system i believe to be broken only encourages complacency.
I communicated the same to the club in order to enact change. I felt that with Ed and Walsh gone that there were enough signs that there was change afoot.
The racism report is a start.
Wright comes in and can make changes.
Buckley will be gone at the end of the year I would be guessing and Harvey and Sanderson with him - the same signs of defensive game plans and ineffectiveness at stoppage are coaching issues.

I've signed up again now in the belief that the required change is afoot.
But it will be a bit of a slow burn on the field while we rebuild and until we get a new coaching panel.

I had a great night at the footy, just being back at the G was uplifting. Also met Nicky Winmar at the pub. Top bloke!

Well said! Couldn't agree more.
Our midfield has been the problem for some years now. It's so easy to blame the forwards, but we give them so little supply and it's poor quality.
We need a gun extractor before anything else

Midfield needs a major revamp. Extractor just one, imo need a genuine first dibs burst pacey type too.

Degoey maybe but never shown 4 qtr consistency in that role.
