Autopsy Round 1, 2022: St.Kilda v Collingwood

Firstly, happy to admit I got it wrong about Hayes. He was terrific tonight and looked a totally different player than over the pre season games.

Now to the negatives

1. Our defensive game is embarrassing. We don't have the cattle to rely on a one on one game in defence. Our best key defender is a good average player and we have little after that.

I expected big changes under Enright but tonight was awful. Conceding 100 points to a bottom 4 side.

2. Our midfield is second rate. Yes we had a few out but only one you can argue is a starting mid.

The sad thing is I can't see where the improvement comes from anytime soon outside of Jones coming back.

The ace up our sleeves should be Clark but the fact we have refused to play him in the middle most of his career means he is green and has a lot of development to go through.

Guys like Cerra and Brayshaw taken in the same draft have been playing midfield for a number of years and look set to become elite mids of the comp.

We have also decided to ignore midfielders in the first round for 2 years straight and are hoping guys like Byrne's and Bytel will do it for us.

Summary - Unfortunately we don't have the cattle in defence or the midfield and our defensive game plan is not going to get us anywhere any time soon.

Collingwood just have better players than us

All-Australians for Collingwood:

Pendlebury x6
Grundy x2
Sidebottom
Adams
Moore
De Goey (squad)
Howe (squad)
Maynard (squad) (didn't play)

All-Australians for St Kilda:

Hannebery x3 (didn't play)
Steele x2
Ryder (didn't play)
Ross (squad)
Butler (squad)

We just don't have many good players, a lot of honest triers and B graders.
Everyone has underrated collingwood, not great but hardy easy beats.

Players who deserve to be dropped for Round 2:

Hill
Byrnes
Battle
Webster
Crouch
Butler
Wood
Ross
Owens
Kent

Everyone else except for Hayes Steele Marshall lucky to survive the chop.

Go and get some ******* balls, Saints!!!! What a bunch of soft ***** this football Club has become!!!!

FS!

What does Kent do at training for the team to keep thinking that his next game will be good?

Ask the people here who defend his selection. Geez, the amount of people who pushed back at the criticism of his selection. Some never learn.

Maybe as a COVID top-up player, that's kinda his level.

Great guy. As a footballer, not up to this level week to week. He'd have a lot of fun at the next level down.

If we were any chance of doing anything this year then we should be beating a poor Collingwood side comfortably, with or without dodgy umpires.

We’re a mediocre side that will finish somewhere on the middle of the ladder.

Need to cut our losses and rebuild a fair amount.

Give clarko 5 years and let him get who he wants and do what he needs

Sent from my SM-N985F using BigFooty.com mobile appunlucky. You guys better team. How you lost?

Based on tonight's performance if we finish in the middle of the ladder we'll be doing well.

Brad f*cking Hill. Please take your 900k a year and spend it on a Basic Footy Skills 101 course for absolute flog sh*t dummies. Useless!!!!
He we go . Hill was the least of our problems. Go get another scapegoat or at least watch the frigging game.

An incredibly poor effort. Looked like we lost contested and uncontested ball ball badly (at the ground not sure of stats). Collingwoods pressure was not matched for the majority of the game. Only time we looked okay was when they looked flat. To all the peeps that talk about the quality and quantity of our mids....

You are all spot on.

The reason we lost tonight!

I have no idea how to rectify it bar the inclusion of those key mids missing however I know we should be beating a bottom 4 side with our side that was on the park tonight.

Fear it's gonna be a long year.....

The serious issue that we have is that Ratts is gonna be coaching to save himself.

Guys like Kent, Wood, DMac etc will keep getting games because Ratts needs wins now and won't want to risk blooding more kids.

In reality Owens, Wanga, Bytel & Windhager should be getting games pumped in because that's our best chance of developing a midfield in the mid-long term.

I was all for Ratts getting a 2nd shot but I don't think he's any better than he was at Carlton unfortunately.
Letho & Clarko 2023.. kaboom!

Well to me same as last year missed chances - Higgins and King.
We just make it so difficult for ourselves. Also can we stop giving away dumb free kicks.

Fumbles , missed handballs cost us big time today
Byrnes, butler, Higgins, Wilkie Hill, McKenzie. We just could not get any space in the game.

Unfortunately it just took us too long to get into the game. I still don’t think we’re that far off it nor do I think Collingwood are that bad. Also feck we need to get Gresh and Sincs into the game earlier. As soon as we addded speed on the ball we looked a whole lot better.

So frustrating today.
Props to Hayes as I said before heart of lion and team lifter it’s amazing how clean he is for someone so big.

We need some help for Steele , getting mauled at every stoppage.

Oh and those pig headed umps missing all Collingwood throws but pings Mason wood is laughable
