Autopsy Round 1, 2025: Positives and Negatives vs Gold Coast

Gameday threads are made for ubervents.

Now that it's a brand new day I just post for lol reacts for the rest of the week and am all in on McQualter's reaction to the shit served up yesterday.
I thought the presser was pretty funny, 'We tried everything, moving players, changing systems'. Kind of a 'I did my part, its clearly the players fault'. He looked pretty flabbergasted with how bad we were and didn't react well to some of the questions. The realization is setting in for him, '**** me I'm going to have to do this shit for 22 more rounds'

At this point can I remind you that we are ONE game in and Freo was flogged, Carlton were flogged, St Kilda were flogged Port were flogged, Collingwood the week before were flogged.
Brissy lost their first three last year and we know how that went .
We are 67 games in with this debacle not 1.

Ignoring the last 3 years when you asked us to compare Hawthorns last 3 years to us seems a bit odd

As long as Jack Graham is our best midfielder then we are last on the ladder. Not a knock on him per se just the reality of any team with him in that role.

TBH as on old timer there was a lot of 2000/01 about yesterdays team. Old guys that are washed up or close, some recruited “mature bodies” who were decent but echoes of “Collica, Richard Taylor, Prior, Merenda, Sierakowski etc”.

We had Cousins, Gardiner and a couple of maybe kids at that point as the future. It turned pretty quick when we played kids and got rid of the recently acquired “mature bodies” under Woosh.

He now knows why everyone else didn’t want the job…

I didn't get the impression he was openly blaming the players at all.
I do think he was shocked at HOW bad yesterday was. The response going forwards is the key.

This is the first decent team we've played against under this new regime, and with Witts etc. this was almost a worst case scenario. No excuses for what we put up yesterday, but I'm hopeful the team will improve. Sucks that we have an in form GWS next week though away from home.

For me the biggest disappointments out of that game were:

  1. The end result. 87 points....man i thought we were getting past the shellackings.
  2. lack of any pressure from the midfield. the mix is just off. i feel like we are putting square pegs in round holes. we have the weakest midfield mix in the league and it has been like this for years. im just pissed off as we all see it, but **** all has been done to address it.
  3. Waterman injury. They said him being subbed was precaution. i absolutely call bullshit. he'll probably miss a few weeks or be playing hampered if he somehow gets up.
  4. My preseason optimism is ded.
  5. The worst thing is, we will likely finish last...trade out pick 1 for 2 picks in the teens and bring in warner and 3 half back flankers with midfield potential.
This would be an unreal return from Pick 1?

Think we have Brissy at their Homeground.

HEd “ nearly” took a few good grabs. Would he have been better spoiling? Maybe; but I like players being confident enough to go for their grabs.
Remember Glasses trajectory!
If WC had listened to us supporters he would have been burnt at the stake.
TK doesn’t seem to have any synergy with his fellow mids.
I think he needs time at HF.
Gross is the kid I’d be eyeing off for an immediate midfield injection subject to fitness.I’d also get HR to take him under his wing and mentor him. Both young tough and talented.Get HR involved and given more responsibility.
Instead of having Gov as a mainstay backman could we free him up and maybe chuck Barnett/Shanahan in there? You are NEVER too young.we are getting flogged anyway does it really matter if we get flogged without Gov in defence?
I think JW is best suited to wrestling Witt type monsters. He just knows how to make body position.
I’d start my midfield with HR,Gross,Baker or Hutch.Combatants!!
Hewett missed an easy goal, then ran with the flight of the ball with great courage. He’ll be alright!
Early days and I hope Mini holds firm and plays the kids.
The first round showed the energy levels that youth bring!!

Allrighty. I know someone very well that has deep connections with the club and worked in the club for a long time.

Speaking to him and a reasonablyrecent, high performing ex eagle, today.

A lot of cancer has been cut out of the club. There is still more to go.

Out of respect I didn't ask which areas.

Your choice whether you believe me or not.

And finally, just for the record ... before the start of yesterday's game the stats were

Games for WCE:
Brockman 10
Baker 0
Graham 0
Owies 0

AFL games:
AReid 0
Hutch 8
Dewar 8

Games for 2024:
Allen 11
Flynn 4
Hewett 0
Long 7

Half the team. As Simmo might say ... Synergy? :)

In hindsight it was going to be a tough assignment especially Rd 1 A few of the players were always going to struggle to impact for 4 quarters .. Long , Hewitt, Flynn resuming from long injury layoffs ,
Kelly and Harley interrupted pre season niggles ,
Cripps was pretty unimpressive in the practice games to me he looked old and tired ..
That’s 6 players and I could probably go on ..Mini did say “if they are in the team they would be fit and competitive .” But not for how long ..

Surely that goes without saying

Not much of a scoop really, this is common knowledge

Hopefully they don't turn up 😁

Looked back at the first 4 rounds last year we were bad, first real game new coach im not panicking,

Gross Allan in
cole kelly out

2 tough nuts in for 2 soft as baby shit seniors

Id also bring in B williams for flynn, Williams extra flexibility and maneuverabilityhelps when the ball hits the deck at stoppage
From what ive seen in Allan can be the ball first guy in the mid? am i expecting miracles? no, but it has to be better than down hill tim

Not usually one to pile on or get overly dramatic, and I appreciate that this is game 1 under a new coach...but yesterday was the worst game I can remember seeing West Coast play. We were so utterly demolished in the mid field, and so far behind in talent and effort that its hard to see where we go from here.

We need to invest every resource we have in talent identification & development, and use the draft wisely. Find the best recruiter and list manager in the league and throw money at them.

This quote below from Don Pyke last year was alarming - I remember hearing it and not quite believing it:

“If you look at the deal in isolation — the slide from No. 3 to No. 12 and using 14 to get Liam Baker — (it) looks a bit odd, but for us it was part of a bigger play around Liam and the commitment we made to him to bring him to the club.

“We’re fulfilling and honouring that commitment as well as sliding back in a draft that we believe has got some depth.

We move down the draft, and allow ourselves to get played by Richmond and Hawthorn, just to honour a commitment to Liam Baker? What did we promise him and when? Sorry, you don't mortgage a clubs future to be nice.
