I think whatever Flynn or BW put up will be enough that we wont have to resort to moving our only competent full back to the ruck.
A repeat of 2023 from Bailey or Flynn getting back to what we expect would be fine for another year or 2.
Still hopeful Barnett can get his shit together and be the ruck we need

It's just a bit of shit talk and banter. Our only competent full back is Oscar Allen but Edwards continually surprises and he should be more than fine playing that role for 2025. And Bailey Williams will finish in the top 5 of our B&F playing in the ruck. As to what our next premiership side looks like, ie circa 2027 Eagles onwards there is a lot to play out. The spine is fairly set for now though, it's the smalls who need to be the focus in this next little phase of development.

We have a touch more to do with our talls, finding a partner for Edwards or if not Edwards then finding 2 KPDs but ye agree smalls in particular the midfield is the main job left.

Bazzo
Shanahan
Barnett

There are three potential CHB's.

Gov for two more years.

H Edwards

Plus Maric as a tall utility.

That is six tall defenders, two established and four developing.

I meant we dont have one locked in, we are still dont know if any of those younger guys are going to be AFL quality KPDs yet.
We may still need to recruit another KPD in 12 months time if things dont go to plan.

I expect Bazzo will be good enough, but Shanahan hasnt even done an AFL pre-season yet and Barnett is a likely(at this stage) failed ruck who has all the attributes but needs to put it all together for a season, in 2026 perhaps Barnett could be our guy

I'm penciling in Shanahan as our Sam Taylor intercepting CHB.

If we give up on Barnett as a ruckman, im putting him in there too tbh, I think he could be good. I think he would beat Edwards for that full back spot in time.

Barnett, Shanahan and Maric as our 3 main defensive talls would be pretty cool I think. Barnett and Shanahan are both pretty athletic too, and great contested marks

What’s wild is Ginbey is only 2-3cm shorter than Bazzo and Shanahan…

He may end up a hybrid KPD like Darcy Moore… was playing on the resting ruckman a lot towards the end of last year and did alright. I think he may have helped nullify Mac Andrew against Gold Coast in the second half comeback win

Don't see Allen playing FF I would have him CHF and Waterman the FF.

Agree Jake is the best FF on our list AND the hardest for oppositions to match up on.

Simo messed up badly last year when, once Oscar was able to play late in the season, he played him at FF at the expensive of limiting Waterman's effectiveness.

wonder if it was to help protect Allens knee a bit? and the usual lack of conditioning coming back from an injury

There can’t be anymore of that, you are either fit or your are not abd hopefully Mini will not play blokes unfit. By the sounds of the type if game plan he wants to play anyone unfit will stand out.
I’m a big fan of Oscar but a big contract for him I would not be offering. He simply does t stay on the park and offering him a long term contract would be just crazy type of stuff.
That’s what we do at our club though…….

Being fit doesnt mean you are necessarily 100%, and he definitely worked into it over the first couple of games back.

Oscar at 75% at FF and Waterman at 100% at CHF is still comfortably better than Darling at CHF and Waterman at FF which was the alternative

Thats not what we do though, thats what people who are no longer at the club USED to do.

Itll be interesting how Clarke plays Allens contract, with significantly less attachment than the former list managers wouldve had

Firstly, don't read too much into bench vs field. Players are mostly just groups (Eg. Some combination of Long/Cripps/Dewar vs Owies )

Bold are players that absolutely have to be in the team if fit.

Cripps will be pushed to keep his spot by the kids.

I couldn't split Dewar/Owies

Long is a chance to miss week 1 depending on fitness. Think he's in the team if fit. Might be smart to move up the field a bit more if he's fit maybe Wing?

Kelly in as HFF rotation with spells in the mid, not primary mid rotation.

Allan as Sub i think works as hes so versatile. Could legit replace someone from any line just about. Doesn't have the tank yet to run out a game at AFL level.

H.Edwards vs Bazzo will be interesting. Think Bazzo has more upside but H.Edwards more predictable.

Gov and Maric taking kick ins.

The Eagles look stronger in every line after the additions of Liam Baker, who is slated for a backline role, Jack Graham, who can rotate forward and midfield, and small forward Matt Owies. With Reuben Ginbey and potentially Ryan Maric filling backline roles, there is a squeeze that could force Tom Cole out. The battle for the No.1 ruck role will be fought by Bailey Williams and Matt Flynn and that could fall either way with both having different strengths. Draftee Bo Allan looks ready to go after impressing at senior level in the WAFL, while Campbell Chesser's form and role will be a key to watch over the summer. The addition of Owies and return from injury of talented youngsters Noah Long and Elijah Hewett has cost Jamie Cripps and Tyrell Dewar in this team, but it is easy to see either being there round one. Premiership midfielder Dom Sheed is another who is unlucky in a full-strength team. – Nathan Schmook

B: Ryan Maric, Harry Edwards, Brady Hough
HB: Reuben Ginbey, Jeremy McGovern, Liam Baker

Emerg: Jack Hutchinson, Jamie Cripps, Tom Cole, Dom Sheed

Much as I like Long, I don't see him getting a game in front of Cripps just yet

I like Maric training with the backs and I can see him as being a great intercepting 3rd tall.

I think he will be honing his craft in this role in the WAFL to start the season... I probably have Bazzo ahead of him in terms of who needs to get some AFL games to build some confidence so we can see whether to extend him.

To be fair, the implication Nathan Schmook has made there is pretty much that two out of Long, Owies, Cripps and Dewar will be in the team - and that's not an unreasonable suggestion. Schmook IMO is pretty astute compared to most of the rest of the WA media fraternity (looking at you, The Worst).

Allan and Chesser aren't playing ahead of Cole either... yet. Looks like a decent team on paper though.

Hard to see Sheed playing much AFL in future with a fast game style, even if injuries to other players allow?

I think Cripps being phased out is a healthy sign for the squad but even with his indifferent form in 2024, I don’t think he is being phased out just yet
