B: Doedee Talia, McPherson
HB: Smith, McAsey, Hamill
C: Sholl, Mrouch, Milera
HF: Sloane, Fogarty, Mcadam
F: Stengle, Himmelberg, Tex
R: O'Brien, Laird, Hollands/first mid pick
I: Brown, Keays, Worrell , Schoenberg

No more first round pick passes for Jones or Mchenry. They can tear up the preseason/SANFL before I consider them again. Once they get their chance no sub 10 disposal games or they are gone.

Brown like Laird this year I want to see in the middle or only down back if we have a mismatch/injury. He has gone stale down back and Mcpherson is the same player. If

We have to manufacture a couple of openings in the midfield so Brad is an easy one for band 1 and Sloane to half forward permanently. He looks good charging down the ground and usually makes good decisions.

Worrell could be an interesting utility option off the bench.

I think we play Jones the first 4-6 weeks no matter what and then see how he goes before sending him to the SANFL. I think he is a lost cause. what you see is what you get. He is no good and he wont make it. hope im wrong

Ignoring draft, trades (outside of the obvious "will take FA cases, i.e. Brouch and Atkins) and of course injuries, this is how it shakes out for me:

B: Brown - Talia - Doedee
HB: Hamill - McAsey - McPherson
C: Sholl - M.Crouch - Milera
HF: Tex/Lynch* - Himmelberg - McHenry
FF: Stengle - Fogarty - McAdam.
R: O'Brien - Schoenberg - Laird

INT: Butts - Sloane - Jones - Keays

Probably aiming for a 5 win season would be my bet.

*Either or, it's just mainly an older guy to give a bit of experience and direction with structure whilst the next-gen gets comfortable. I would like at least one highly experienced player in each of the three sectors being an on-field coach and teaching the next-gen how to coach themselves onfield.
5 win season is basically no progression on this season . Should be aiming for 8 wins if we are serious with our development

with return of crowds etc meaning home games are more significant we’d want to win 5 at home next year

Don’t worry re Jones , he will be fine . You’ll see a different more composed player next year

Considering we're all but guaranteed to lose our best midfielder at this point in time (seeing I don't expect us to retain Brad) and there are a lot of hard to predict players in that line up (either due to being young with underdeveloped bodies, old guys in Sloane and Lynch, or kids just off a breakout year). I'm not feeling super confident on us progressing with our win count in 2021.

Here's my team. Player age end September 2021 in brackets.

FBLuke Brown (29)Daniel Talia (30)Andrew McPherson (22)
HBBrodie Smith (29)Kyle Hartigan (29)Tom Doedee (24)
CWayne Milera (24)Matt Crouch (26)Lachlan Sholl (21)
HFNed McHenry (21)Elliott Himmelberg (23)Shane McAdam (26)
FLachlan Murphy (22)Darcy Fogarty (22)Tyson Stengle (22)
RReilly O'Brien (26)Rory Laird (27)Rory Sloane (31)
IFischer McAsey (20)Will Hamill (20)Harry Schoenberg (20)Lachlan Gollant (20)

Differences from convention:
- I understand that I am on Murphy island by myself. I just like that he really attacks the contest, and the rest of his game is just barely good enough.
- I really like what we have seen of Gollant and feel confident on him at AFL level.
- I think McAsey is a few years from wrestling with key forwards so I don't mind keeping Hartigan for 2 more years. Would still have McAsey at AFL level back in defence in a mix of supporting the keys and as 3rd tall. He might also develop well by getting to specialise in his role (defensive general) at SANFL level. I am not keen to have him defending Tom Hawkins etc at AFL level in 2021.

Developing:
- Jones I'd like to see destroy the SANFL as a genuine mid for 4 weeks then get him into AFL. If he isn't doing it at SANFL level, think about trying him in a Castagna type energiser bunny forward press role.
- Butts I am not as bullish as most here, not good one-on-one, and not good enough with ball in hand to be a loose defender. Maybe more development at SANFL level and he gets there.
- Worrell I don't know, I just thought his AFC youtube interview was so weird. Hope I am wrong.
- O'Connor will be a midfielder, so no point playing him elsewhere at AFL level for the sake. Develop midfield craft in the SANFL until form proves he deserves a chance.

Depth:
- DMac and Kelly I am fine with as reliable depth. I like that they don/t have to be the man, if we have a kid worthy of a game play them, if not play DMac and Kelly.
- Keays I see as depth. Too old to be considered a developing player. It's great that he put in a good shift for us when Brad and Sloane were injured, but realistically our midfield this year only clicked when Keays moved out of it. I would not be happy to see him played ahead of a worthy kid. Same boat as DMac and Kelly for me.
- Strachan and Frampton as tall depth
- Gallucci I would give another year

Departures:
- Gibbs, Atkins, Wilson, Knight and Taylor confirmed
- Walker must go, hopefully Lynch too. Walker should have gone last year. We need to clear room for Himmelberg, Fogarty and draftee(s) to develop. I don't think either Walker or Lynch can fit as a complementary piece supporting the kids (DMac and Kelly can do that), they need the ball kicked to them, which means we won't be kicking it to a kid. So we need to get them off the list.
- Seedsman doesn't have a place in our first team, I would think he goes to a team like Melbourne for a late late pick with us paying some of his salary.
- Crocker is useless
- Poholke, Davis, doesn't really matter, depends on numbers I guess. Even if we have room, probably rather they go and we take a flier on a random late draft pick, I am sure some quality kids will go later than usual because of the lack of footy to sort out the rankings this year.

Assuming Thilthorpe/McDonald Pick 1, and Hollands Pick 2. Assuming the Atkins compo in some form gets us Hately...

FB: Brown, Talia, Doedee
HB: Smith, Hartigan, Laird
C: Sholl, Sloane, Hamill
HF: Pick 8 , Fogarty, Lynch
FF: McAdam, Pick 1, Stengle
Foll: O'Brien, M.Crouch, Hately
Int: Milera, Kelly, Schoenberg, Pick 2
Emerg: Seedsman, McPherson, Keays, Butts

You can still progress with four wins. That’s amazingly productive when totally rebuilding the spine.

Hollands not ready due to ACL

I’m worried about Smith. He’s been dishing out some serious turnover poo with his sling kick.
He needs to change his habits and not overreach.
I'm looking forward to having all of Smith, Milera, Hamill & Sholl in the same side distributing the ball... as it means we become less reliant on going through Smith.

Ok I may as well have a crack at this.

My assumptions:

1) We draft Hollands at Pick 1 - he won’t be ready for AFL footy until after the bye in 2021 at the earliest coming back from an ACL.

2) We DON’T get band 1 compo for Brad, but we do manage to match an offer and trade him to Geelong in a deal that nets us Brandon Parfitt and Geelong’s end of first round pick (currently 16)

3) We trade a second round pick for Jackson Hately, but he is forced to earn his spot

4) We draft with a long-term view and none of our 2020 draftees are ready to play in Round 1.

5) Hartigan leaves as a FA

6) Talia and Seedsman both stay put, despite the trade rumours

7) Walker and Mackay both go around for one more year

List changes are as follows:

Out (12 players):

Gibbs (retired)
B Crouch (FA offer matched - traded)
Atkins (FA)
Hartigan (FA)
Kelly (thrown into a trade as steak knives)
A Taylor (delisted)
Wilson (delisted)
Knight (delisted)
Crocker (delisted)
Strachan (delisted)
Poholke (delisted)
Gallucci (delisted)

In (10 players - leaves us with a list of 42 which is the current expectation):

Pick 1 (Hollands)
Picks 8 (GWS) and 16 (acquired from Geelong in Crouch trade) - 1 x best available tall fwd and 1 x best available true mid
2nd rounder (highest upside player available)
Newchurch
Borlase
Edwards
B Parfitt
Hately
1 x rookie draft selection (Pick 1 of the RD) = highest upside available

Therefore, our 2021 R1 team, barring injury, is:

B: Brown - Talia - Doedee
HB: Hamill - McAsey - Smith
C: Milera - M Crouch - Sholl
HF: Parfitt - Fogarty - Sloane
F: Stengle - Himmelberg - McAdam
R: O’Brien - Schoenberg - Laird
Int: Lynch - Keays - McPherson - Jones

Emg (from - depends on preseason form): Butts, Walker, McHenry, Hately, Worrell, Gollant, O’Connor

Those not up for Rd 1 selection due to being “depth only” or not ready for AFL footy: Hollands, Pick 8, Pick 16, 2nd rounder, Newchurch, Borlase, Edwards, Murphy, Frampton, Davis, Seedsman, Mackay

Notes:
*Assuming Doedee can get his body right, Hartigan leaves via Free Agency, and Talia isn’t traded, the battle for the other KPD position between McAsey and Butts is going to be one of the most interesting positional battles of 2021 for mine. Late in 2020, Butts was preferred as the Doedee replacement. With Doedee back, I’m backing McAsey to emerge as the Hartigan replacement, assuming Kyle departs the club (which is probably only 50/50 at this stage).

* Nicks probably realises by now that Fog and Tex probably can’t co-exist in 2021. I’m backing Fog in to get the gig in Round 1, alongside Himmelberg in a smaller and more agile overall forward setup. Parfitt and Sloane both spend quite a bit of time on the forward flanks in 2021, while McAdam and Stengle are obviously permanent fixtures inside forward 50. Lynch still retains his spot in the side initially, but he’s mostly further up the ground.

* 2021 is a massively important year for Jones and McHenry. Both need to drastically improve, or they’ll start to be considered monumental busts along the same lines as the soon-to-be-delisted Gallucci. I personally don’t see how McHenry breaks into the best 22 when everyone is fit, but “everyone being fit” doesn’t usually happen so he’ll have his chances.

* Hately is a tough one to place. I’m sure many would shove him straight into their starting 22, but realistically this would probably mean Jones misses out. This could become a fascinating battle. In the long run, Lynch probably gets squeezed out to accommodate both of these guys (and there’s always going to be injuries that allow both to play), but I still think Lynch has a bit more to offer at AFL level than many posters on here will care to acknowledge. Top 10 in the B&F even when out of form.

* Hamill, Sholl, Schoenberg and McPherson were all revelations in 2020, and are walk-up starts in 2021. Looking forward to seeing continual improvement from all 4 of them.

* I’d love to see all 3 of Worrell, Gollant and O’Connor debut at some stage in 2021 (Worrell is a certainty to do so, the other 2 we’ll have to wait and see). All have attributes that I think are hugely valuable to our squad moving forward, so hopefully at least one of them can emerge as a Sholl-like revelation in the second half of 2021.

* I’d obviously like to see all of our upcoming first and second round picks debut in 2021 as much as everyone else would, but that really depends on who we select. Hollands we know won’t be ready until after the bye as he will be eased into things in the lower levels after his long ACL layoff. As far as the others go, it depends on whether we take long-term prospects like Bruhn (coming off multiple major injuries) and Cox (skinny as hell), or more “ready to go” prospects like O’Driscoll, Perkins and Eddie Ford.

You can still progress with four wins. That’s amazingly productive when totally rebuilding the spine.

Definitely. After all, method matters as well.

Only win four games, yet we manage to stay in every game is a pretty big improvement on this year, and would bode very well for 2022.

McAsey in for Butts and it's pretty close for mine. If Hollands is pick 1 reckon he would go close to getting picked ahead of Jones.

HB: McPherson, McAsey, Smith
C: Sholl, Laird, Mackay
HF: Keays, Walker, Lynch
