This is what I expect us to roll out with

B: Brown - Talia - Kelly
HB: Mackay - Doedee - Smith
C: Sloane - M. Crouch - Seedsman
HF: Lynch - Walker - McAdam
F: Jones - Himmelberg - Fogarty
R: O'Brien - Keays - Laird

I: Milera - Sholl - Murphy - Hately

E: McAsey - Schoenberg - Pick 1 - Hamill
Lols. Is Thommo back coaching the women? Can roll him in too.

B: Butts - Talia - Doedee
HB: Hamill - Mcasey - Smith
C: Milera - M. Crouch - Scholl
HF: Sloane - Fogarty - McAdam
F: Stengle - Himmelberg - Tex
R: O'Brien - Laird - Schoenberg
Int: Keays, Hollands, Hately, Mcpherson

Notable omissions: Kelly, Mackay, Seedsman, Jones, Mchenry.

I cant justify both Lynch and Tex. I think we are too tall if both play in addition to Himmelberg and Fog who should be locks.

I expect that Sloane will be in the centre square at the opening bounce of every quarter that he is selected for.

So with Hartigan leaving , there is nothing more certain than Kelly playing every game.

Seed and Kelly were the only senior players dropped this year that had played consecutive games. Seed stayed dropped for a few games both times but Kelly was rushed back the following week both times. But Doedee was injured in both games he was dropped for, so his return was likely due to that factor. I'm hopeful that we've moved past Kelly and our slow ball speed from defence system. But we do have a selection philosophy that leans on experience above performance, so there's always doubt.

You mean the Jake Kelly who managed 15 games in 2020 and a David Mackay who not only managed 10 games but a top 10 in our BnF.

I'll believe they won't be in our round 1 side when I see it.

B: Brown Talia, Doedee
HB: McPherson McAsey Milera
C: Sholl Smith Hamill
HF: McAdam Himmelberg Worrell/Fogarty
F: Stengle(round 5) Thilthorpe Jones
R: ROB, Laird MCrouch

INT: Sloane Hately/Keays Schoenberg Pedlar/Berry

Our experienced players are Brown, Talia, Doedee, Milera, Smith, Himmelberg, ROB, Laird, MCrouch, Sloane. Still plenty of experience out there. No Walker and Lynch in this side.

I like the pace in the team with Doedee, Milera, Brown, Sholl, Smith, Hamill, McAdam, Jones, Stengle, Laird, Schoenberg, Worrell, Pedlar/Berry all with reasonable to express pace.

I think this team can still win between 4-7 games next year which should be the objective as well as getting experience into the young kids.

My pre-draft (and I'm not projecting who'll we draft, though the only player I reckon we'll draft who seems odds on to break into our round 1 side would be McDonald. I assume with Hollands ACL, and Thilthorpe groins, we'll be uber-cautious with their workloads next year. A good preseason changes it for me though) round 1 side, assuming no injuries whatsoever.

B: Brown - Talia - Doedee
HB: Smith - McAsey - Sholl
C: Milera - Hately - Hamill
HF: McAdam - Himmelberg - Lynch
FF: Murphy (Stengle) - Fogarty - Sloane
R: ROB - M.Crouch - Laird
INT: Schoenberg - Keays - McPherson - Hinge

It's definitely on the shorter side, and I'd be comfortable with us sacrificing Lynch as a swingman of sorts. I don't know how capable Tom will be of that, but it's more drawing the short straw seeing everyone else is young or Talia.

I also reckon Hinge gets a round 1 debut. He was not far away at all for Brisbane and considering where our two clubs are at, if you're not far away for Brisbane, you start here.

My updated round 1 side if I was coach:
Assumptions:
We draft Hollands/Phillips with pick 1 and trade up to get pick 5 from GC.
With pick 5 we take Cox. I have been big on McDonald but I just feel Cox has more strings to his bow and is a better contested mark and likely would have been in the conversation for pick 1 had he played this year. His disposal is elite.

Wait, when has Cox been known for his contested marking? I would take him at 9 if get Hollands, I would only trade up to 5 if it were Thilthorpe instead.

My Rd 1 team won’t change much from 2020. Still need mixture of experience and young. I would also look to move Fogerty in the guts for small periods.

B: Brown - Talia - Doedee
HB: McPherson - McAsey - Hamill
C: Smith - Hately - Scholl
HF: Sloane - Walker - Lynch
FF: Rowe - Thilthorpe - McAdam
R: ROB - M.Crouch - Laird

emg: Jones - Himmelberg - McHenry - Butts/ Kelly

Milera out injured
Stengel Suspended

Well considering we always draft purely for round 1 of the following year:

Borlase McAsey Brown
Hamill Doedee McPherson
Sholl Pedlar Milera
Cook Fogarty Stengle
Rowe Thilthorpe Newchurch

O'Brien Berry Shoenberg

Laird Jones Worrel McAdam

Just 3 years out of the 2017 GF and those teams are unbelievably unrecognizable. Which is a good thing with the list clean out.

Still think it will take a couple of drafts more at least plus getting those 50-100 games into our players, but then we can press and move forwards to competing for the 8.

In 2 years time, we need to add a player like Luko/Rankine/Hollands to this team.

I dont think we are allowed to play suspended players. Rowe is a certainty. Keays has to play there as well. McHenry in the 2's.

Walker won't be played over Himmelberg. Himmelberg was our best forward for the 2nd half of the year. If anything they would play Walker over Thilthorpe which they shouldn't. Would like to see Walker really help the young kids out in the sanfl. Every game he plays at AFL level means a player that is part of our future doesn't add to their experience.

Himmelberg will be backup. Walker it depends on his preseason shape and form.

Agree.

Nicks and Pyke were under different kinds of pressure.

Pyke didnt care about the development of our juniors. Nicks has the opportunity and luxury to groom players without the concern of playing finals.

Lynch won't play 22 games and can swop with Walker to maintain that mature head in the forward line.

IMO there is no way Thilthorpe doesn't play - he's played 2 years of SANFL footy, what would be the point of not playing him? I can't wait to play the Hawks and see Thilthorpe vs DGB, or vs Gold Coast vs King - this is why we TT is such an important pick for our future.

Meanwhile McAsey will be on King at St Kilda, JUH at the dogs, and McDonald at Sydney.

That is the future.

McHenry is not looking great for a spot, but hopefully comes along in 2021. I would prefer Pedler or Cook in that emergency spot, but don't know how far they are to debut - would be good to get 5-10 games into them both.

I like this. Maybe Keays for Jones so he can get some SANFL confidence? Will Thilthorpe be medically good to go?

My depth chart with 1st XXII in bold

Tall forwards: Fogarty, Himmelberg, Thilthorpe, Lynch, Walker, Frampton

Small/medium forwards: McAdam, Stengle, Murphy, Davis, Rowe, McHenry, Gollant, Cook, Newchurch

Inside mids: Crouch, Laird, Sloane, Hately, Schoenberg, Jones, Pedlar, O'Connor, Berry

Wings / half backs: Milera, Smith, Sholl, Hamill, Keays, Seedsman, Claude the Crow, Mackay (Keays only listed here because he finished the season on the wing when our mids were all back)

Tall defenders: Talia, McAsey, Butts, Worrall, Borlase

Small/medium defenders: Doedee, Brown, McPherson, Kelly

Rucks: O'Brien, Strachan

F: Thilthorpe Fogarty McAdam
HF: Stengle Himmelberg Keays
C: Milera Hately Sloane
HB: Smith McAsey Sholl
B: Brown Talia Doedee
1R: O'Brien Crouch Laird
INT: Jones Schoenberg Hamill McPherson

I know Stengle is suspended but maybe he'll get time off for good behaviour

I know people tend to overrate their list at this time of year but without hyperbole, looking at that line up 2021 could be the first of several premiership dynasties in a row
