i wouldn’t play Pearce unless we need him

Eg he plays every 2-3 weeks when we need his height for a matchup on king or Tom lynch - alternate weeks we can use hamling/Logue/Cox

A young full back should be on our draft agenda too.
I’d nearly agree with this.
I don’t think we need Pearce at all against Collingwood for example.
Alex could become a specialist brought into play on the following players/teams:
Richmond - Tom Lynch
Melbourne - Tom McDonald
Port Adelaide - Charlie Dixon
Carlton - Harry Mckay
Geelong - Tom Hawkins
Sydney - Buddy Franklin
Saints - Max King

He’s not needed against most of the other sides. Teams like Collingwood, bulldogs, hawthorn GWS have forward lines that can be better handled with Pearce out and a Logue/Cox combo surrounded by mediums & Smalls.

The first quarter was damning. Not only did we have an avalanche of inside 50s we had so much time and space and still found a way to stuff up literally every entry. Erasmus snapped a goal through some luck. Frederick scored a goal through a free, although he was in space.

So either the movement up forward was non-existent or we just didn't gel. No one led up at the ball carrier. That's something Switta, Walters, Treacy, Tabs and even Amiss have been doing.

Not one forward sacrificed their game to create space for our talls.

Then when our talls couldn't compete and at minimum bring the ball to ground close by, we just didn't score.

Treacy did lead out once in the first, but he spilled the low down mark. Need to grab those.
I thought we looked quite comfortable until Casboult kicked that goal late in the first, it seemed to really shift the tone; from there it was a bit of a poor man's circus, with fumbles galore and a lot missed kicks, scruffy handballs etc and of course credit to GC, they pressured us once they got a sniff like sharks smelling blood. We were well off, plain and simple and never really recovered from that Cas goal late in the first like I said. We didn't capitalise on those forward 50 entries as you mentioned and it shot us in the foot....if we squeeze out 2 more goals minimum in the first quarter I think we might have had enough to get the psychology right, we had them uncertain moving their ball out of their 50 in the first but then went to shit there after, especially once the rain came with the already humid conditions. We overdid the handball and missed targets and hack-kicked into our forward 50 too often.....overall it was a sloppy, forgettable affair from our perspective, Cox's miss summed it up for me, it just wasn't our day

On a dry day we kick 5-6 goals in that opening term. We were all over then and went in 2 points up.

We than shat the bed.

18-6 inside 50s in the first term.

oops, forgot what thread I was in thought I was in the GC autopsy one!

Changes...hmmmm

IN: Sturt, Walters, Amiss, Switta, Tabs
OUT: Tucker, Banfield, Treacy, Erasmus (back to medi-sub), Pearce (if injured)

Not actually sure who was subbed out in the end but Walker was on the field. I think the commentators said it was Pearce (?). Logue to cover if he is injured (again!).

Unpopular opinion, but I wouldn't mind seeing Crowden get a game to see if he can provide some bullet passes into the 50, but not sure who you'd drop him for, midfield wise?!

I don’t think you are far off to be honest. I’m not sure tabs AND amiss are necessary though.
Sooner we get back to Tabs and Lobb up front then we will have some experience to work though situations like today successfully

Maybe, but I like what Amiss brings to the table. He just has that "something", you can already sense it. Having reliable set shot kickers is our bane, we need to see a blend of forward pressure craft with skill-sets and dead-eyeness....Switta and Walters will provide that pressure and Sturt and Amiss can provide the accuracy. Maybe.

Tabs is Tabs, he's our #1 forward. Lobb can also do some ruck work and relieve Darcy, who has proved more than a handy resting ruck/forward in his time....might be too tall though, so maybe Amiss a-misses....groan.

Also, if Frederick was dropped I wouldn't begrudge it, but I think wet weather DOES not suit his approach, his fast wheels. I'd imagine he gets a reprieve but is on shaky ground, needs to perform at a higher standard now that competition for spots is much more rife

Just had a look at the stats and he's probably been more consistent this year but he's still had 3 or 4 games where he completely disappeared. Generally a good contested mark but clearly that was never going to work for him today and it seemed like he didn't really present any other options.
Nope. I disagree again. Stats mean far less than most people think in regard to the value of certain players. His rucking has been way better than recent years and his biggest asset to our team is his ability to bring the ball to ground when he is outnumbered and that's resulted in a lot of goals. He's been great in my opinion overall this season. Today was a day he was coming back from Covid and he will never be a good player in the wet.

Well today is also what I was directing criticism at him for. Regardless of covid, he had a poor game and was a good part of why we never even looked like scoring

Then that's very harsh. It's impossible to know how much Covid has effected players. Our game plan isn't suited to wet conditions currently. We'll probably have to tweak a few things to give our forwards better opportunities when its wet. Our seasons going better than most expected with Fyfe to come into the team very soon. One loss is not the end of the world.

How will we back it up next week. Hopefully today was a 1 off..

of his 12 disposals how many were effective, his decision making is usually slow, imo would not even get a game at the suns
His game should’ve suited the wet weather, but didn’t. Had little effect and shouldn’t be in the rotation. Fyfe will be coming in the next few weeks

Is there a sneaky chance Fyfe will be ready for this game?! Or more likely another week?

I'm thinking it might be worth resting Mundy. I know he had a break early in the season but after a game in rain and humidy and the long trip to the Gold Coast it might be worth having him fresh for the Melbourne game the following week which will be a 6 day break after the Collingwood game. Let Erasmus have good run in the midfield against a younger Collingwood side.

Small forwards are the problem at the moment. We need to get more return from Banners, Frederick and Colyer. Schultz and Switta are our only consistent small forwards at the moment.
I found this ironic you say the small forwards are a problem at the current moment.

Ok, I agree with it when we lost to the saints in round 2. The small forwards got a combined 29 disposals and 1 point. Next week in the Derby those 3-4 smalls combined for 70 disposals and 6 goals and 4 behinds.

It was 2 or 3 weeks ago 4 small blokes up forward combined for 52 disposals and 5 or 6 goals which isn't bad.

Having 4 small forwards getting 13 disposals each and getting 5 or 6 goals isn't a bad outcome

Didn’t JL a couple weeks back say round 10 for Fyfe? Not sure what’s changed in that regard. Just get him in if he’s ready. Get a game under his belt before Brissy and Melbourne.
think that was supposed to be a bit tongue in cheek because McRae was in ze studio with that drunk bloke and that sneery bloke (???)

I like this train of thought, that slog in the wet would physically take it's toll...I noticed Andy getting clattered a fair bit too, hope he's alright. He's made of brass balls though. Get Mundy cherry ripe for Melbourne, I also believe we can win against Collingwood resting him. I don't know if J-Lo will do it as he leans much more to a conservative end of the spectrum, but it makes sense to me...

Throwing everything at Melbourne will lower our chances of beating Brisbane and it’s more important to beat Brisbane if we want to finish top 2.

Pearce was definitely on him for the first quarter one as he bumped him out to take the grab, I’m not sure about the 2nd one and as you say I’m not sure I want to rewatch

I’ve now gone back and had a look at Casboults and Chols goals. As said previously, Logue was on Chol for two of his goals, while Pearce was on him for the other two, one of which Logue was off the ground entirely. For Casboult, Pearce was on him for his first goal and Lobb was on him for his second, again Pearce and Logue not even on the ground. That journalist who compiled the “player ratings” in the West (who said Logue gave up 4 goals to Chol and Casboult) needs to cancel her big footy account and start watching the game.
