Graham back in 100% to help sure up the midfield a bit

Would like to see Towner get a run sooner rather than later.

Vlastuin has to go back, we need him back there and Caddy has to go fwd to provide Lynch with a decent foil. If Caddy's going to play more mid again this week then they should seriously look at bringing in Towner.

Also heard Stanley is back for the Cats, very underrated ruckman. Soldo will get destroyed around the ground and Stanley will probably get 30 touches and kick 3 on him. Actually think Soldo might get dropped this week and they'll back Balta in.

Higgins, Butler and Bolton will all be nervous

Not a chance Soldo will be dropped. This year he averages more hitouts than Stanley, 31 - 29, and if he can curb his influence at stoppages like he did with Goldy he will have done his job. I doubt anyone at the club, even Soldo will expect him to be Nank-like around the ground after only 10 games. He was good last week under the circumstances and I reckon he will have another good fame Friday night.

Hitouts are over rated - Only a handful per game have any impact

Stanley torched Grundy around the ground when they played - Soldo will get murdered but your probably right in that he wont get dropped.

They're overrated, but not when they are to advantage, like Soldos 50% against the Hawks. That dropped against n0rph, but he kept Goldy quiet not only in the ruck but when the ball hit the deck. Soldo was very good. Looking forward to seeing him perform this week.

In: Townsend, Lambert
Out: Higgins, Butler

We need midfield depth. It's been missing for 2 years. Townsend can play mid and tall forward....he's perfect for what we need atm. Lambert to bring back some much needed pace in the middle. They're actually pretty much like for like changes when you look at it but much better players currently.

lambert not ready

Hitouts to advantage are like the disposal efficiency stat - a flawed measurement. Just bc they go to where they intended doesnt mean its an advantage especially when that midfielder is tackled/held up. Technically that's a hitout to advantage but theres no advantage there. The real stat that isnt measured(not publicly anyway) but should be, is winning clean ball from the hitout. In truth, there is only a handful of these per game, handy but not worth focusing so hard on imo and I reckon our coaching staff have the same philosophy- smart bunch ;)

I thought Soldos game was putrid but in fairness to your point, Goldy only had a dozen touches himself and wasnt influential at all so credit to him for that.

Graham and Towner back this week with Naish on his debut, make it happen. I want Broad to be dropped and Vlastuin to go back.

In: Graham, Towner, Naish
Out: Broad, Butler, Bolton

Higgins and Bolton are fortunate that Rioli didn’t do enough in the twos.

Graham and towner would be my choices to come in too. Need to beef up our midfield and towner gives us a lot of flexibility with Martin and caddy.

I'd push Higgins back into a forward role to get a bit more spark and creativity up there.

That was never going to be a one week injury, back then I said 4-6 weeks if they caught it early enough, wont play before the bye

Garthwaite had a sore achilles for 4 months during pre season...

I had Achilles tendinitis took 6 months for mine to go .

They also rested Stanley and Abblet, probably their most effective players this year other than maybe Kelly and Stewart.

I haven't seen much of the Cats but if you can restrict Dangerfield and Kelly it is a huge plus.
They interviewed Stack on the news tonight.
If he can lay a coathanger or two it would help.
He is an X-factor.
Collingwood had 54-14 hitouts versus Freo so if you can control ground ball you are in with a chance.

Do we think we are over estimating the need for the abundance of pressure-smalls these days?

Like, we built our game on pressure in 2017 but it wasn't always the smalls doing it, despite it being a sizeable factor. Our 2017 finals campaign was full-ground pressure and amazing defence, and our 2018 was just because we'd become a gun side. If anything our pressure was way down in 2018 but yeah we made up for that by being very good.

Now I think we've messed up at selection a bit, despite having had some great wins with our injury-depleted side. Too many smalls that don't also contribute well enough in the midfield, thus being short-changed in the midfield itself. We weren't to know Jack would go down so we've really needed Lynch, and I expect later this year and next year we'll really reap some rewards, but I was an advocate for using that money on a gun midfielder and paying our own cattle too. But it's done now. We're also currently a target short in the forward line, or at least a foil short.

Anyway, based on what I'm saying, it's time to buff the run & carry and midfield, and get another target into that forward line, so this week I'd say (partly on quality, not just form):

IN: Graham, Rioli, Townsend, Naish*
OUT: Butler, Higgins, Bolton, Soldo*

*Only cause I really don't rate Soldo and very much want to see Naish. Back Balta in.

Grimes, Garthwaite, Vlastuin
Houli, Astbury, Stack
McIntosh, Cotchin, Ellis
Caddy, Townsend, Baker
Rioli, Lynch, Castagna
Balta, Martin, Prestia
Edwards, Graham, Naish, Broad
