MRJ another one who shouldn’t be in the squad. 6 possessions, 4 tackles in the ressies and he goes into the mix for sub? On form there’s a few comfortably in front of him I reckon.
Footy funny game tho , he could easily come in and kick a couple , mansell and Pickett out we need someone to bring the heat

All for being critical of team selection, as it has warranted it many times over the last three seasons, but hard and downright shooting yourself in the foot making wholesale or anything other than enforced after a win like last week.
Which is why I don't get the melts that are happening tonight, there was only ever going to be 1-2 changes with Pickett and possibly Mansell going out. Miller coming in is to try and replicate the role that Pickett has been playing as the 3rd tall to combat the Saints tall defenders in Battle Wilkie & Howard who will just sit back and pick off the footy all night if we're just sitting it on Jacks head. If Mansell goes out, I'd like to see Banks getting a chance , but fully expect Maurice comes in or Hugo gets a reprieve

Would love it if that happened. Once the team is locked in I’m behind the side 100% like all of us ( I hope!).
I can only judge selection on exposed form though I reckon there’s a few doing more in the twos than MRJ and Soldo right now and they’d be sitting at home wondering how those two are in the squad ahead of them.

All this bagging of Tyler Young is amazing. Why?
Because he doesn’t get much of the footy? No different to Grimes and Astbury when they started. He’s a spoiler at this point in time and I’m hoping as he gets more confidence, he'll back himself to take possessions and take the game on. He’s tall enough and has decent leg/closing speed to be a decent tall defender imo.
If it’s for that tap back towards goal that cost us a goal, well, that’s just being petty. We had 3 players at the back of that contest and he was very unlucky it fell to Walters. Not much different to when Jack kicked it forward of the contest against the Bummers that ended up in their winning mark and goal.
I've been a big advocate but his game on the weekend was as bad as it gets. His opponent nearly took the game away from us early. Was poor defensively and shocking going the other way. He was just really really bad.

Meanwhile guys like Cumberland, Ralphsmith and Ross (until recently) are cut at the drop of a hat.

Not sure if anyone has posted this

Curtis Deboy (11), Hayden Gavine (14), Brendan Hosking (16), Ray Chamberlain (18)

You thought last week was a shafting
AFL staying true to form , and if by some miracle Mansell gets off it will be the shafting of all shaftings

Or maybe the wins might have been easier with better selection?

We’ve dropped more than our fair share of close ones in the last two seasons and we really got a role on last year when selection went the way many of us were screaming for many weeks earlier. You could make a decent argument that selection has played a role in a few of those close losses.

Just because we are getting the win doesn’t mean we can’t be better.
Our back 7 are: Balta Grimes Broad Vlastuin Young D.Rioli & Short. Balta & Young are playing as the key defenders, with Grimes as the 3rd tall. That leaves Broad and Vlastuin to play as the mid sized defenders with either one capable of being the intercept marking defender, which leaves Rioli & Short as the rebounding defenders. People wanting Young out because he doesn't get a heap of possessions seem to overlook that in terms of our defensive structure he is quite important. If he goes out, it means everyone elses role changes as well and who do people want to come in and replace him in the line up? Well tonight people are saying Miller should, but then there is the issue with the forward line with Pickett out.

Over the last month our forward 7 have been based around: Jack Ryan Pickett Martin Baker Graham & Mansell. Jack & Ryan are the key forwards, with Pickett as the mobile 3rd marking option. Martin is the x factor who does as he pleases, while Graham & Baker both push up into the midfield once the ball is in play, Mansell is the defensive forward who has been slotted in to the role George used to play who keeps his width on the fat side when we're in attack and then puts defensive pressure on when we are defending. Miller has been our next tall in line all year, so with Pickett out is the obvious replacement, but if we go with the consensus on here and Miller replaces Young down back, when he hasn't really played down back all year, then who do you have come in and play Picketts role?

Who would his match up be RT , I hope you don’t say king , Balta needs to go to him. Caminiti perhaps but I’d like to see broad go to him and play off him , bit of a head scratcher unless he has alternate plans for young ,,,I’d really like to see him back at VFL and be re tooled in the ruck even go forward , he’s lost all confidence in defence

Don’t mind the Miller selection as it gives cover for Nank who is sore this week as well as replacing Pickets role, even if it does look slightly different forward(tall). We have midfielders we can throw forward if we look too big so no big deal. His size also provides us with a plan C if King really gets going and we need help.

On the defensive structure, you can’t build structure around Young as one of the key defenders when he is looking so vulnerable and leaking scores. They moved Grimes into that role last week to steady things up. Broad can move into the third tall role which he did at times last week and then we can fill the mid size defender role with options that we do have in the reserves and fringes of the senior side.

We rotated Young out of that key back role last week and he was still vulnerable playing as the medium/third defender. I’d rather see someone else in and young go back for a bit of a reset in the twos.

All that said, I’m not surprised they’ve kept him in because they would probably think size and weight wise he should be able to hold his position much better against the lighter, younger Caminiti. I think it’s a huge risk. Young needs further development. He’s not ready.

Caminiti would be the ideal match up which then allows Broad and Grimes to go to Phillipou & Owens, which then allows Vlastuin to set up as the +1 intercept marker.

As for going back and retooling him as a forward or ruck. FFS can we stop trying to reinvent players. In a couple of years time Balta Gibcus & Young could be the nucleus of our D50.

Agree, sick of seeing us throw our players all over the place in the twos, stalling their development in the role we drafted them in.

I think you overate Young. He hasn’t proven he has the talent or temperament to make it yet.

Young has had 34 defensive half 1-1 contests & has lost 4 for the season, he also has 18 more spoils than any other defender in our side despite only playing 9 games. He isn't in the side to get possessions, he's in the side because of his importance to our structure and him playing his role then allows others to play their roles better. As for not being ready, 12 months ago he was plugging away in his first season in the VFL, to now playing his 10th game at the highest level, the kid has had an unbelievable rise through the ranks. Having a rough game here and there is to be expected. As I said in a couple of years we could have a very good defensive base to build around with Balta Gibcus and Young, who could be the next generations version of Rance Astbury & Grimes (not suggesting they'll be the same level)

Watched a lot of Young last year and was pleased when we picked him up, thought he'd spend a year in the VFL developing but the injury to Gibcus has given him an opportunity, which I think he has taken, reckon the coaches/match committee agree given they brought him back almost immediately after he recovered from injury.

Smooth moving, skillful winger. Probably been our most consistent VFL performer. Deserves a debut.
Banks definitely a beautiful kick but he takes a lot of kick-ins. They count as possessions when you have left the square before kicking them. Maybe means his disposal numbers are inflated by at least a couple, I would guess. Just does not win his own ball, really needs to play in centre square at VFL level to develop these skills.

I can see the logic in playing Miller. Nank may also be carrying that niggle/ cork he picked up last week so some ruck cover is handy.

Yep, and can replace Young in backline and play forward when Samson is in ruck
