Prediction Round 15: Changes Vs Carlton + pre-match discussion

If you look at it that Melbourne and Fremantle first conspired to give Freo two bites ahead of Carlton and then Adelaide picking McAsey meaning both of Carltons remaining choices to go home from the prom with in Young and Serong were gone then their little spray as we walked off with their crushes is just the soundtrack to victory.

Don't get me wrong, I want Carlton to get ground into the dirt. I want it more than a derby win. But I want to cross the foreheads of my victory babies in Young and Serong with the tears of their fans to really remind them they were beaten their first.
I recon SOS was also shitty considering they swapped pick 4 for Stoker & could have had either.

It’s funny a few years ago when he was out of contract and we were doing our usual “ we need a fwd “ dance on here I had a thing for ol Levi Casboult

100% big NO from everyone

Oh how they laughed

Would have been perfect in hindsight Fwd / Back / Ruck cover and still going strong

There’s a lesson in there somewhere…. I’m sure of it

So, you had an (not uncommon) idea and some on here disagreed... yes?

Casboult's always had an elite ability to stick a mark, contested, pack, wherever. This high-end elite attribute though has been seriously diluted for much of the time by an elite-level tendency to spray the kick afterwards. Not only did this negate a lot of great marks, but you get a lot of wasted entries into the forward line as others are deprived as the entries are hoovered up by Casboult. Casboult has also had mini-renaissances before, one as near as a couple of years ago, where he was a semi-revelation for a half of season, before nbeing on the wane in the second half.

Also if we had Casboult now (and I'd guess he would've preferred Suns over coming here anyway), we might never have seen Logue in the forward line as well as other potential domino effects.

Imagine a Carlton v Fremantle GF. Could happen in the next few years
As someone once said on here: We need to take our chances now beating Carlton in Melbourne whilst they're vulnerable because, in our Premiership window, we will HAVE to beat them in Melbourne at some point to win a flag as their window overlaps with ours so it needs to hold no fears now.

Way to miss the point

I just remember some of the reasons stated ; can’t kick , too old , why would you want a player from a shit team like Carlton

A Levi type veteran to fill in between Tabs Lobb and the young blokes might be worthwhile , even someone like Josh Walker from North even though I’d have him a level below Levi

You never know with a bit of revitalisation one of these older players could be useful for a year or 2 in our situation

Fremantle defender Luke Ryan is confident he’ll face Carlton despite missing training this week because of illness.
The Doig medallist was a noticeable absentee at Cockburn on Wednesday but says “he’s turned the corner” ahead of the Dockers’ bumper clash against the Blues at Marvel Stadium on Saturday.
“I was pretty sick and sore I reckon on Sunday, Monday, Tuesday but I’ve turned the corner lucky enough,” Ryan told 6PR.
“I ran some laps yesterday and I’ll probably do a bit more today and see how I go. On the captain’s run the day before the game I’ll do a little bit more again.

“I definitely will be (good to play).”
Ryan, 26, said there was a “good rivalry” building between Fremantle and Carlton in recent years.

“We match up really well against each other and no matter where we’re playing it’s always a good game,” he said.
“They’re contested ball is obviously they’re number one, they’ve got big midfielders in there, so beat them at the source there.

“And obviously stopping (Charlie) Curnow and (Harry) McKay, two massive forwards who can kick massive goals and really quickly as well.”Fremantle remained coy on if spearhead Matt Taberner would also play, having returned from a back injury for Peel Thunder at the weekend.
“I think they’re doing the best thing for him,” Ryan said.
“Over the last couple of times he’s come in and played off one game he’s reinjured himself again and this is a long flight.
“I don’t know if they want to give him another week in the WAFL just to run around and get some more minutes into him to get ready for another big game next week.”
Selection for the big game is this afternoon, with the Dockers expected to name forward Michael Frederick after he missed their last clash with suspension after drinking on a six-day break.

Ok. Maybe you can be specific about the point and how exactly I'd missed it.

But moving beyond that, what I'd guess is a summary of what you're saying in your second post there, is it's a more general roll of the dice on a cheap older player who may fill a backup need?

There can be logistics with that, which mean it's not as straightforward for us as it might be for clubs on the East (let alone the list & game selection decision-making flow-ons, which impact younger players' opportunities).

It's certainly not an unsound idea that I'd dismiss out of hand. I'd still say though there's plenty to work with on the current list, particularly if you're as tactically sound as our coaching crew seem to be.

It's an interesting discussion around what mature KPFs might be gettable.

Franklin - no chance, but hopefully we had a crack
Walker - only if Adelaide doesn't offer another contract
McStay - suspect he'll stay at Brissie, if not Victorian clubs more likely
Darcy Cameron - likely to re-sign with Collingwood, if Lobb were to leave he'd be the best potential stop gap for FWD/ruck from my perspective
Weideman - Hasn't set the world on fire, could be gettable
Schache - Has set the world on fire less than Weideman
Mitch Brown - actually preferred to Weideman by Melbourne recently
Darling - Haha

I've left out players I don't see as gettable (eg. Georgiades) or as KPF (Zurhaar, Mason Cox).
I'm sure there's some I'm not thinking of, including plenty of fringe options.

Why take Tabs if he doesn't play?
He needs a run somewhere.
Is Liam a replacement for Walters or Acres?
Suggests he's playing doesn't it.

Henry has been building for the wing so you'd expect if he is to be considered it will be for there, they could try and slot him into HFF to get him involved but it would surprise me.

Franklin is definitely a chance.

A level below Levi Casboult...

Ewwww.

Longmuir interview this afternoon:

"Hughes will remain in the side"

Pretty positive about Taberner playing. "we think he's over that back injury"

(Wonder if it depends on how Tabs's back feels after a plane trip)

Probably.
They really want to test that Carlton’s decimated defence. It’s dry, he’s going to get a second or third defender with Logue and Lobb. Worth it tbh

Curnow’s only a worry If they get it into their forward line. I reckon we persist with Logue forward and back our mids, at least to start with.
Yeah we've got the flexibility to swing Logue back if needed.
You'd assume Hughes would continue in the backline, and if it gets to it Logue goes back and Hughes can do some time on the wing or even half forward.

Equally if we can't get the ball in, it won't matter about their height deficiencies in defence.
Longmuir basically said where Fyfe plays will depend on how the midfield battle goes, if we're getting it in he'll push forward, but if we're losing the contested ball he can go in there.
