We had the chance to win it...pie player into an open goal and bounces it poorly and is tackled

What would have been an amazing 1 point escape won turns into terrible defeat

Long drive home

Stellar work with the updates as always Schu! Much appreciated.

Collingwood's hopes of featuring in the VFL finals series were dented by a five-point loss to fellow September aspirant North Ballarat at Eureka Stadium on Sunday.

Leading by three goals at half time, the Magpies were overrun in the second half, conceding 10 goals and kicking only six of their own.

They lost Caolan Mooney in the opening quarter after the Irishman had to be taken from the field on a stretcher following a collision with Bryce Curnow, meaning that they were robbed of one of their most potent attacking options.

In his absence, Kyle Martin stepped up to the plate. The 22-year-old kicked four goals and three behinds and was the driving force behind Collingwood's attempt to pull the match out of the fire in the dying stages.

Martin ended the day with 21 possessions (14 kicks, six handballs), six marks and four inside 50s.

He was well supported in the midfield by Andrew Krakouer (25 possessions; 11 kicks, 14 handballs, five clearances), Ben Kennedy (23 possessions; 12 kicks, 11 handballs) and Jack Hellier (23 possessions; 16 kicks, seven handballs, two clearances).

Promoted rookie Adam Oxley used the ball 25 times (21 kicks, four handballs) and rebounded out of his side's defensive 50m four times to go with his two inside 50s.

Collingwood's ruckmen also performed strongly. Jarrod Witts won 32 hitouts along with 20 possessions (11 kicks, nine handballs) while Ben Hudson contributed 15 hitouts of his own.

Supporters will also be interested to track the progress of Jake Kelly. The son of 1990 premiership legend Craig Kelly was selected as Collingwood's 23rd man and proved his worth with 11 possessions (three kicks, eight handballs).

The loss means that Collingwood is now in ninth position with two rounds remaining before the finals.

North Ballarat is level on points (eight wins each) but is slightly ahead on percentage.

Essendon is one game behind but was comprehensively beaten by Box Hill on Saturday.

Thanks for the votes!!

Boys, that was a tough one to swallow.

We looked really solid in first 2 Qs - then it all fell apart in the 3rd.

Chance to steal it after some long bombs down the line by Kenno + Ox but ball handling error at the end (not mad at this player, we all make mistakes, just bad time to do it! Should never have been in that situation and not sure we deserved it)

Kenno: in and out of the match but was very good when he had it.

Broomy: not as quick as i thought he was and he doesnt draw your attendtion on the field but i thought he did some really good things to day. Needs a pre season or two to build stamina and strength.

Paine: started really strongly and then faded badly.

Huddo: showed fire and desire

Frosty: see Huddo - did well and tried to really make his man pay (both on scoreboard and physically) - just needs to be careful re: giving away frees

The Ox: Showed today why he's a fan fav - had a real dip

KMart: really good and, apart from his goals, was one player that put a lot of pressure on at stoppages.

Ramsay: thought he was really good in the first half also - liked his time in the centre. i think Sewell showed him up in the last half.

Richmond: did pretty well but gets really lost at times.

Russell: just my opinion but meh. and a foot over the line kicking out.

Krak: tries to do too much all the time - now his balk trick isnt a trick, it's just what he does. a handball now would be a trick. Needs to player tighter on his man also (but not alone there)

Kelly: what he did was mostly ok - one bad mistake that led to a flukey Ballarat goal but the kid had a dip. lump of a lad.

Witts: not his best day. made a few turnover errors and looked slower than normal. fought well in the ruck.

Great reporting, much appreciated.

I was at the game and thought Paine was disappointing. Had 10cms on his opponent and was well beaten. Witts looked good in the ruck but is really slow. It might be an issue if he is playing as that forward/ruck that defenders can run off him at will.

I liked Broomheads game. Looks good when he gets the ball and took a big contested mark late in the game to bring it back to a goal. Martin was also fantastic. Looks dangerous when he goes forward in the air as well as on the ground. Disappointing for him to be chased down at the end after such a good game.

Another thing I found interesting was that despite the fact that the game was a must win for the VFL that Seedsman went home at 3 quarter time with the seniors having a 6 day turnaround. He was the kind of player who could have broken the game open in the last. Not surprised that they limited his minutes but surprised he wasn't managed more throughout the game so he could play at least some of the final quarter.

It was a great game all round I thought. Both teams had their chances but the Roosters came away with it in the end. As a statistician for the Roosters (don't hate), I was able to get some stats from our point of view of the game. These are fairly close to Collingwood's but of course, we will have missed a couple or so for the game. If anyone would like them, please just ask. I have all players from both teams.

Cheers, Clarkey.

Hoy is a great defender nonetheless, there is a reason why he was placed on . I thought he definitely got the better of Paine.

A very interesting thing I gathered from the game was the Sewell vs. Ramsay battle. It was great to see and once Sewell kicked a ridiculous goal and gathered a few extra kicks on him, Ramsay's confidence obviously dropped. Despite that, he did keep battling but I think the experience helped Sewell beat him in their contest.

Martin was fantastic today. Really enjoyed doing his stats. From what we counted, he gathered 14 tackles and was very good all around the field. 4 clearances and 3 marks inside-50. Just a solid performance.

Krakeour was good. Seemed to be a class above the rest half the time but he did seem to get caught up in the play a bit. Still think he played well and seemed to be enjoying himself out there.

Seedsman played an unreal game. At every opportunity he was off like Usain Bolt. I expect him back in the 1's soon! He does however need to work on his kicking as we counted 45% kicking efficiency. Oxley was also very good however he only gathered a couple of handballs. Not sure if he trusts his hands or is working to a gameplan. I am thinking the latter is most likely but playing in the midfield/wing, I would have thought he would get in a few more passages.

Interesting ... don't have a first half / second half break down do you? I know asking a bit but just wondering as I would've thought Sewell got right on top in the second half...

Also do you have those same stats for Broomhead, Kennedy, Martin, Oxley, Frost, Paine, Seedsman, Witts, Hudson

Ramsay had 13 in the first half, Sewell had 10.

I do but I will do them tomorrow if I have time sorry mate. Uni in the morning. Better get some sleep.

Sorry about the loss fellas but that's footy hey. Go Roosters! :D

Broomhead 15 possesions and 2 goals
Witts 32 hitouts
Paine 3 goals
KMart 4 goals & 21 possesions
Krak 23 poss
Seedsman 20ish possesions, went home at 3/4 time

Well just to make things clear, Seedsman didn't "go home". He just got rested haha. He walked towards the carpark with the rest of the players post-game

Hey! You still up? Where are the stats you promised? The whole team broken down into quarters wasn't it?!;)

Haven't had much time sorry mate. What do you want to know? And don't tell me every player because I don't have time haha. Max 5.

Dale Tapping’s VFL Player Review

2. Jordan Russell
Tapping Says: Came back from a foot injury and contributed well defensively, but we’d like to see a little bit more attacking offence from Jordan in the coming weeks.
Statistics: 10 kicks, 1 mark, 2 handballs, 12 possessions, 1 clearance, 2 inside 50s, 5 rebound 50s, 3 tackles

7. Andrew Krakouer
Tapping Says: Returned some good numbers inside the contest where his first hands were good. He contributed well.
Statistics: 11 kicks, 2 marks, 15 handballs, 26 possessions, 12 clearances, 1 inside 50, 1 rebound 50, 1 tackle

15. Jarrod Witts
Tapping Says: A solid performance. He rucked for the majority of the match and got first hands on the ball to set us up at clearances, particularly in the first half. His tap work inside forward 50 was also very good. Benefited from being our main man in the ruck.
Statistics: 11 kicks, 2 marks, 9 handballs, 20 possessions, 5 clearances, 3 inside 50s, 1 rebound 50, 5 tackles, 36 hitouts

130813_witts600.jpg

25. Ben Hudson
Tapping Says: Played a half and contributed well, sharing the ruck duties with ‘Wittsy’.
Statistics: 5 kicks, 1 mark, 1 handball, 6 possessions, 2 clearances, 1 inside 50, 2 rebound 50s, 1 tackle, 16 hitouts

27. Ben Kennedy
Tapping Says: Travelled back from Sydney on the morning of the match (he was the travelling emergency for the senior match) and in the circumstances he put in a strong performance. He competed well in the contests, as he always does, and won plenty of the footy.
Statistics: 11 kicks, 4 marks, 9 handballs, 20 possessions, 5 clearances, 4 inside 50s, 0 rebound 50s, 3 tackles

29. Tim Broomhead
Tapping Says: Did some really good work when he went forward. Showed great courage in the second quarter to go back with the flight which contributed to us getting a goal before half time. Developing his game as a midfielder.
Statistics: 10 kicks, 5 marks, 5 handballs, 15 possessions, 2 clearances, 3 inside 50s, 1 rebound 50, 0 tackles

130813_broomhead600.jpg

30. Ben Richmond
Tapping Says: We’ve been using Ben as a key defender and he is showing some good signs in his development down there. He has been pretty disciplined in his last two performances.
Statistics: 1 kick, 1 mark, 3 handballs, 4 possessions, 1 clearance, 0 inside 50s, 1 rebound 50, 1 tackle

31. Jackson Ramsay
Tapping Says: Had the role on Myles Sewell (the brother of Hawthorn’s Brad, an experienced VFL star) and it was a great learning opportunity for him to develop another aspect of his game. Will take a lot from the game.
Statistics: 6 kicks, 1 mark, 9 handballs, 15 possessions, 3 clearances, 2 inside 50s, 0 rebound 50s, 4 tackles

33. Jackson Paine
Tapping Says: Didn’t have his normal impact in the way he has in previous weeks. Expect to see a strong performance from him against Sandringham this week.
Statistics: 5 kicks, 0 marks, 1 handball, 6 possessions, 0 clearances, 2 inside 50s, 0 rebound 50s, 1 tackle

37. Kyle Martin
Tapping Says: Returned some good numbers and played a very good game offensively, finishing with four goals.
Statistics: 14 kicks, 6 marks, 8 handballs, 24 possessions, 5 clearances, 4 inside 50s, 2 rebound 50s, 12 tackles

40. Paul Seedsman
Tapping Says: Only played a half but contributed extremely well and his run and spread was of a high standard.
Statistics: 9 kicks, 2 marks, 6 handballs, 15 possessions, 1 clearance, 4 inside 50s, 1 rebound 50, 3 tackles

43. Adam Oxley
Tapping Says: Contributed well. His ability to play his role within the structure was very important to the team. A solid performance on half back and through the wing.
Statistics: 22 kicks, 7 marks, 5 handballs, 27 possessions, 2 clearances, 2 inside 50s, 5 rebound 50s, 4 tackles

45. Jack Frost
Tapping Says: It was his second game back from injury. Frosty is still finding his feet having missed a lot of footy so he will continue to benefit from the more footy he plays.
Statistics: 3 kicks, 2 marks, 4 handballs, 7 possessions, 0 clearances, 2 inside 50s, 0 rebound 50s, 4 tackles

48. Caolan Mooney
Tapping Says: Unfortunately Caolan copped a heavy hit late in the first quarter and missed the rest of the game. Up until then he was having a real influence on the game with his speed. We really missed him after quarter time.
Statistics: 4 kicks, 0 marks, 3 handballs, 7 possessions, 1 clearance, 2 inside 50s, 0 rebound 50s, 0 tackles

130813_adam600.jpg

This is Adam Forbes, a young Magpie fan from Ballarat. His father Damien appears to have taught him well, judging by his kicking action. Photo: Shane Barrie.

53. Jack Hellier
Tapping Says: Strong effort in the midfield again with his ability to win the contested ball. He contributed well again and has really developed his footy this year.
Statistics: 16 kicks, 3 marks, 8 handballs, 24 possessions, 4 clearances, 3 inside 50s, 2 rebound 50s, 10 tackles

55. Matt Boland
Tapping Says: A strong performance from Bolo. He’s really worked hard this year in terms of getting his body right and in a condition that can compete well at VFL level. The rewards are now showing with his capacity to get higher up the ground from half forward.
Statistics: 13 kicks, 8 marks, 3 handballs, 16 possessions, 0 clearance, 4 inside 50s, 0 rebound 50s, 4 tackles

57. Tim Allan
Tapping Says: Played a number of different roles throughout the course of the game. With his flexibility he’s been a good contributor for us.
Statistics: 5 kicks, 1 mark, 9 handballs, 14 possessions, 0 clearances, 1 kick, 2 rebound 50s, 6 tackles

59. Sam Williams
Tapping Says: Came in this week and played a number of different roles through the wing and half back. We moved him onto Steve Clifton (ex-Greater Western Sydney) in the third quarter to stop his influence.
Statistics: 3 kicks, 1 mark, 5 handballs, 8 possessions, 2 clearances, 0 inside 50s, 1 rebound 50, 2 tackles

63. Jordan Collopy
Tapping Says: As a first year player, Jordan’s really developing his footy. He’s had some big roles in last couple of weeks with what he’s been asked to do within our structures and his preparedness to carry those out has been very positive.
Statistics: 6 kicks, 3 marks, 9 handballs, 15 possessions, 1 clearance, 3 inside 50s, 0 rebound 50s, 1 tackle

65. Chris Mangoni
Tapping Says: Played his first game since round nine. Had only the five possessions playing a variety of roles.
Statistics: 2 kicks, 1 mark, 3 handballs, 5 possessions, 0 clearances, 1 inside 50, 0 rebound 50s, 1 tackle

66. Tom Tyquin
Tapping Says: Another first year player who had a role on Bill Driscoll. It was a good learning experience for him, with Driscoll getting him up the ground a bit and then taking him back inside 50 so it was a good learning experience for him.
Statistics: 6 kicks, 1 mark, 2 handballs, 8 possessions, 0 clearances, 1 inside 50, 2 rebound 50s, 3 tackles

71. Jackson Heagney-Steart
Tapping Says: Had one of the key defensive roles which saw him play on Pat Nicholls and Michael Searl. Jackson competed well as he always does.
Statistics: 4 kicks, 1 mark, 3 handballs, 7 possessions, 1 clearance, 1 inside 50, 1 rebound 50, 4 tackles

72. Jake Kelly
Tapping Says: Really positive. Jake (the son of 1990 premiership Magpie Craig) came in as our 23rd man and contributed really well. Certainly showed that he can play and looked comfortable in that environment as a young player. He was a real positive out of the game, playing mostly in a defensive role.
Statistics: 3 kicks, 0 marks, 5 handballs, 8 possessions, 1 clearance, 0 inside 50s, 1 rebound 50, 0 tackles
