King’s season alive in Saints shock

AAP
Max King has had arthroscopic surgery on his injured shoulder and could play again this season in a dramatic twist for St Kilda.

Coach Ross Lyon on Sunday said the 23-year-old was “done for the year” after re-injuring his shoulder in the opening seconds of the Saints’ 21-point loss to Melbourne on Saturday. But the club’s Wednesday night update painted a much rosier picture, revealing a rehabilitation period of potentially just five weeks.

“The key piece of information from the surgeon was that Max wouldn’t be at risk of any further or lasting damage if he was to play again this year,” St Kilda’s acting football boss David Misson said. “Max will now begin a rehabilitation period which will include strength and functional milestones he’ll need to hit along the way.”

It is the same shoulder King had reconstructed in December after a fall at training. He missed the opening nine rounds of the season, but marked his comeback with four goals in round 10 and has booted 14 in six appearances since. Misson said the long-term solution would be to stabilise the joint with further surgery at a later date. “This procedure will be different to the one Max underwent last year and can be delayed until a later stage,” he said.

“We understand there will be a lot of interest in Max’s progress and we’ll look to provide updates as often as practicable.”
The Saints (9-7) won their first four games of the year in Lyon’s second coming as coach but have now lost four of their last six matches.
They face a difficult road trip to take on fellow finals hopefuls Gold Coast in round 18, the Suns still processing the mid-week sacking of coach Stuart Dew.

Wouldn't matter who comes into the forward line if they are just going to stand still and watch their opponents take easy marks- I think we have some kind of forward coaching issue with the forwards not really positioning themselves correctly, or, just confused as to what they should be doing when the ball is coming in. Maybe a tall forward line might be the go this week. Plonk big Tom in the square, bring in Heath and play him as a high forward and just get Sharman and Caminiti to go for every mark as hard as possible and split the packs.

Put Dougal Howard at FF and just tell him to get a fist on every bomb that comes in there. Then go the ground ball. Lol.

Congratulations Jack Peris! Great reward for effort. Has had a very good consistent year for Sandy. Well deserved

Looking forward to his speed and pressure!

Peris getting a game, love it, his pressure has been great in the VFL. With him, Butler and Nas all running around there should be a lot of run down tackles.

Also lol @ us getting GC right after they sack Dew. Wonder if players will be motivated or deflated?

I think we are probably scraping the bottom of the barrel if Peris gets a game unfortunately. Hope he can provide a spark though. Maybe his pace in a more open game can provide some opportunity for him.
Totally disagree. He has looked well up to it lately. Absolutely deserves a run in the senior side, often a small forward can look even more dangerous at AFL level too. Imagine playing as a small forward at Sandringham. I think he'll take this opportunity with both hands.

Quick, good tackler and good skills from what I've seen.

Terrible call. Clearly haven’t watched any VFL this year. He’s definitely earned his chance

Well done to Jack Peris -worked hard and got rewarded. Lyon had probably realised that our forward line is like treacle and needed an injection of run.

A must-win in QLD to keep the finals dream alive. Also a BIG congrats to Jack Peris who will make his debut on Saturday!

That's great news. I'll admit when we picked him up I had no expectations, thinking he was more athlete than natural footballer but his form at Sandy has been promising this year.
Hope he goes well
