Remember when we only lost by 50 to Hawthorn and it was a moral victory?

have loved rogs passion for the club but i wouldn't be opposed to putting his AFL career in cotton wool permanently, sorry rog.

trial as a key back for the rest of the year? michael close:thumbsu:. with schache, hipwood, walker, and ballenden in the 2017 draft i don't think there will be room for close in a year or 2, he needs to find a spot quick smart.
Walker hurt his shoulder on Saturday night (not sure if any lasting injury), and Schache might need a longer rest. Might not. Point is, it doesn't take much for the Lions to lose a couple of KPP, and we're left with not much. Close kicked 2 goals in a poor team, in a shocking game, in just his second game in 2 seasons. A bit soon to be moving into the back line I reckon, particularly as he hasn't even had a run there in reserve grade.

yep agree, i did post when he first came back from injury that i would like to see him trialed there in the NEAFL. just that long term i can't see a spot for him in the seniors up front, i could be wrong. if he wanted to stay around and not try his luck elsewhere in the league i would be all for keeping him on as a depth player.

I agree it might become an option, long term. Not this year though, even as a trial. (Unless we get stuck at that end).

Didn't watch the game, was down in Byron for the weekend. :surfer: Would have hated to see the team lose by that much.

It's all a bit pathetic, it's our home ground and we're losing by crazy margins. Every team would be stoked knowing they can up to Qld in the winter and get a win and a break from the cold.

If Andrews wasn't one of the better kicks in our side, everyone would be calling for him to be dropped. He can't accelerate, must be playing with some kind of hip/groin injury that others have suggested. He also needs about 2 years in the gym.

I know there isn't many other options for us but &*%$ why would you want to play your best when one of your teammates can't stick a tackle and isn't offering much with the rest of his game.

Also our tackling - every week the opposition's player just break our putrid efforts to tackle and dish the ball of to any number of players streaming forward. How have we not fixed this ? Employ someone with a league background and teach them a proper tackling technique. For god sake we are based in the state who has won 10 of the 11 Origins and we are the worst tackling side in the comp !

Whats Trevor THE AXE Gillmeister up to...??

A serious question do we have a tackling coach ?

But absolutely agree Been a huge bug bear of mine for many years, even when Vossy was in charge our ability to stick a tackle was poor. and it is not the younger under developed bodies not sticking tackles its the older blokes.

I really feel for our defensive unit, the amount of times teams can WALTZ from kick in to a mark inside their attacking 50 is an absolute disgrace. Meanwhile we get a kick in and we bomb it aimlessly straight down the guts.....

Really exciting debut from Archie and he was our clear BOG but that's a bit of an indictment in itself because I reckon Trengrove very clearly had the better of him. As much as I'd love to vote for Hipwood, he only had about 6 touches and I reckon 5 of those would have been in the first half.

Had a lot of nothing players out there who had bugger all impact on the game - Rockliff, Bastinac, Lester, Taylor, Mayes, Cutler, Hammelmann, Keays, Hanley etc. Andrews looks he needs a rest to get himself right and I'd be happy to give Paine a go at the spot for the last few rounds to see if he's worth keeping around. I didn't pay much attention to Keays but he was barely sighted and whenever he was he was a bit dear in the headlights and looking to dish off straight away. Pittard had no impact on the game so the only thing I can think was that maybe Keays played a defensive role on him?

Zorko and Robinson were okay without being particularly good. Good to see Walker and Close stand up and kick a few. Mathieson keeps trucking along too which is good.

Don't think there were too many other positives to take from it though.

Will be stupid if Mathieson doesn't get a nomination sometime before the season finishes. Been our best, most consistent first year player this year.

Smith might be a chance this week, but otherwise it doesn't look good for us getting any nominations this year. Four rounds to go and surely Sicily will be earmarked for one of them.

IMO we should not just judge our players on stats alone. Hipwood crashed packs and contest for marks all day but there are no stats that show that. Keays running and courage at times was awesome. Rocky keeps on getting big stats each week but what does he do with them? I think we need to look at workrate and more than just stats.

Need to try and hire Tonie Carroll to teach the lads to tackle.
i appreciate the idea of getting in a specialist coach but i see the tackling method of RL as significantly different to the AFL. in league the players like to drive players into the ground, this is virtually out lawed in our game, hawthorn seem to be transitioning the tackling technique to a grab one arm method and wait for the incorrect disposal.

would rather we go with a former AFL player renowned for his tackling. who that would be i would not know at this stage. also the way the top teams just drop the ball in a tackle to the advantage of their team is astounding ATM, we need to be trained in this as well.

I understand. I do however think that teaching players to actually use their shoulders instead of just flapping the arms could help in sticking tackles.

It wasn't losing that annoyed me the most, it was Leppitsch's press conference afterwards. He is a broken man and clearly devoid of any ideas now on how to fix the multitude of problems we have. It was as if he went we got our second win, so now we have switched off and just going to pick up some frequent flyer points before Mad Monday.

Can we get a "drop the ball as soon as contact is initiated" coach?
yep, hawthorn are brilliant at this. i have thought for a long time that if you take possession of the ball the only way you can get rid of the ball is a legal disposal, none of this ball spills out in tackle or genuine attempt bullshit.

if the ball spills out without any PO it can only be play on if it falls to the advantage of the tacklers team, if it falls to the tackled players teams advantage a ball up is the umpires call.

Hawthorn are masters at knocking the ball or tapping into their players paths, arms or direction if they are even slightly touched.

Sicily has a nomination already. I'm still hoping Schache or Hipwood manage one before the end of the season.

And Matho:

Port Adelaide's Jared Polec kicks to Wingard, who marks the ball. Mathieson arrives at the contest as the mark is being taken and makes strong body contact to the back of his opponent.
