Hannebery over Owens is the right move 100%
Dumb call Rooey.

Owens was great against north, he played 30% mid.
5th mid behind Jones.
Even in the VFL he only played half a game mid.

We are replacing Gresham, a starting centre bounce player.
3rd game half forward or AA premiership rover?

Can’t wait to see more of Owens in the 1s.
He will be in next week if not sub or late change this week.

I wonder if selections are in anticipation of Hanners not lasting the full game? Medi sub needs to be a like replacement, which is not Long. Toss Owens in the guts if Hanners' wheels fall off?

If finals was out of the question, I’d agree. But we’re (hopefully) trying to win games and as much as Owens game looks good (it is), isn’t Hanners the better option if we want to try and win?

Surely Hannebery at 70% game time would be more influential than Owens at 100%. Or am I completely biased and wrong?
No, I agree with you: I think the thought process is probably allowing Hanneberry an easy first game back so that is firing on all four cylinders for the tougher matches coming up:

Brisbane, Cats in Geelong and Sydney, then IF everything goes right for us, potentially even more difficult finals, probably starting with Brisbane again and continuing with either the Cats for a 3rd time
or the Magpies according to my "calculations" on the ladder predictor .

We will need a leader for those matches, someone to stand up and get everyone behind them and I am banking on Hanneberry to stand next to Jack Steele and provide that leadership and the example of how a professional operator prepares for finals football.

Mitch Owens will have plenty of opportunities in his career but right now we're fighting to survive in this season. This is not carnival football yet.

I'm over all the talk about Hanners voice. It's a bit like the way everyone talks up Hill's running capacity. Give me possessions, marks, goals, defensive spoils etc.
In case you haven’t noticed, our leadership has been deplorable for most of the year.

Lack of leadership was even identified as the main reason for our recent awful form slump, and Steele is not the vocal type like Dan is.

With Ryder and Howard out in particular, Steele needs all the help he can get in this “space” (I had to put that word in there because apparently it’s a thing these days!).

Roo and Joey both think Hanners is a strange selection.
Notwithstanding the effort he has made to get back to fitness, ”What is their thought process?”
Joey also mentioned just 2 vfl games and 15 afl games in 4 seasons.
Out of contract and very doubtful Saints will offer him a new contract either.
“Baffling, when you’re building for the future.“
Mentioned Owens’ good performance in the vfl last week too. Roo would rather have picked him.
Are Nick and Joey down at the club watching them all train, and play at Sandy, and on top of who’s done what, who’s ready for what, which roles they’re all going to play, etc, as much as those who selected them are?

You know, Ratten, Lade and co, who also know a thing or two about football? 🤔

Or would they be about as on top of all that as us on here, and just casually observing and making comment?

I’ve got a funny feeling that if those two were still playing and we were up to our ears in the race to finals and they had the choice between a Hannebery- who’s apparently been training strongly for weeks, and now has two games under his belt- over Byrnes (who’s spot he’s effectively taken) that they wouldn’t need to think too long about it, and that it wouldn’t be Byrnes, just quietly!

Yet do we need him? I know you love your rucks but I reckon losing a runner isn’t great.
No surprise to me when the team that uses two rucks in 90% of their games selects two ruckman.

The surprise is when they don't.

Given the outs, the only slightly surprising selection is the inclusion of a bits and bobs player (Long) ahead of a mid (Owens)

Well you must have been surprised at least 5 or 6 times this year if not more.

If we are picking a guy we don’t think can play a whole game we should give it away

Whilst I agree it’s actually a great idea but only if you have no injuries beforehand. Play in just over a half then take the punt that there are no other injuries and say he has one. Won’t happen though as our club seems to use the extra player as it should be.

4 at most I would guess.

Wonder how often we train with Jarryd Leinert in the ruck?
No idea but how it 4 at the most if Ryder has missed 6 and Marshall one and Campbell only played one. Doesn’t that make it 6 or are you counting lienart as a ruck? Surely he is a ruck like Sharman or battle are rucks.

It reminds me of when they pulled John Howard out during the election. Just looks a bit desperate, instead of backing in new ideas they pul out the guy who smells of mothballs and boiled cabbage and hope that he doesn't croak during the cafe stops.

I hope he defies his body's post 2016 record and gets through and carries us to finals but it's real fingers and toes crossed stuff.

Is Hanners leadership stuff a bit of an urban myth though? I've seen them train and he didn't jump out as the most leadery guy out there. He looks like he loves being around the boys and always has a smile on his face but he certainly doesn't radiate that kind of Luke Hodge barely contained malice towards anyone who doesn't push themselves.

Been there 4 years sounds like he hasn’t taught them a thing

And did you see hodge train much? If they say he is a leader then why not believe them. And let’s face it I doubt you have seen hanners train much because he is basically always injured. Maybe it’s inside where he leads. He certainly seem to lead in the small amount of games he has played. And just because you are a leader doesn’t mean you can make others leaders. Jack Steven probably wouldn’t be captain at lorne. Some just don’t have it unfortunately our club seem to have bugger all and I’d be certain the club put a huge amount of work into leadership.

The problem with playing two rucks isn't so much the two rucks, it's the fact that we pull Marshall away from his best position and play him somewhere that he is average.

It shows how average our forward line options are. And also shows why I think it's ridiculous when people bag King.
