I bet coffield got some nice tips in rehab lol

With how long Hanners has been in rehab I'm not sure I would be seeking him out for rehab tips, probably better to get tips from someone like Steele who came back quicker than expected from rehab.

If Marshall plays full forward he’s kicking at least 4 this week. That’s my tip.

King at CHF, Campbell in the ruck. Just try it. If it doesn’t work, switch Campbell and Marshall, and adapt to the game.

We need equal tall targets up forward not just Max. That’ll bring the smalls into the game.

Ideally Campbell is out of the side and we move Sharman up forward but you know, I’m all for experimenting, and Campbell has been more then solid in the VFL.

It was painfully obvious in the West Coast game that we needed another tall target up forward to help out Max, Membrey and Sharman are more third tall types that aren't really that tall so with Ryder unavailable it leaves Campbell as the next best option with him rotating up forward with Marshall.

What I don’t get is why people think Marshall will magically kick goals this week. He hasn’t all year. He is just an average forward.

when he does kick goals though it looks exceptional. like if he could do that all the time he'd be one of our best forwards. he leaves such an impression on the audience when he clunks a mark and slots a goal with perfect kicking

Well it stands to reason that if Marshall play's more time forward it increases his chances of kicking goals... I don't know if they will be magical or not. We will wait & see.

Rowan Marshall career games: 82, games kicking at least 3 goals: 0

Jack Hayes career games: 5, games kicking at least 3 goals: 1

Tom Campbell career games: 55, games kicking at least 3 goals: 1

Marshall has some forward craft and can be a wonderful, long kick for goal at times. He's never put it together in a game, however. I'd probably be splitting the ruck/forward/bench times between Marshall and Campbell 50/50 to start, and then see who is playing better in the ruck and move forward accordingly.

This is a quality stat.

Even if he isn't kicking goals he can still be a tall marking target that opposition defenders need to worry about and prevents them from just swamping King when he is our only tall marking target. Even if he doesn't mark the ball he can still provide a contest that creates crumbs for our small forwards.

So far in his career the most he's ever kicked in a season is 13. He's kicked 9 so far this year which equals his second best year.

He's a very average forward but what makes it so frustrating is he's a fantastic ruckman.

Funny we used to say “he’s no great ruck but his ability to go forward and kick goals is what elevates him.”

Always the media bites of “see not many ruck men can genuinely go forward and kick goals like that” after he kicks a goal

He's an adequate ruckman but plays a more clearance type game. His around the ground marking is excellent and he's able to step up when we need to get going. He's a hard one to use to his strengths but he's almost worth building a role to suit his strengths. Ross Lyon used to play McEvoy as a tall marking option floating across HB when he wasn't rucking. Perhaps something simple like that.

To me his perfect role is the old follower. That means a midfielder in the rucking role. Follows the ball around the ground apart from inside 50 unless the other ruck is off the ground.

I think there are other midfielders more suited to that role... It is difficult with Marshall to find somewhere outside the rucking duties... He's often a good target, 1st kick exiting defensive fifty.

I reckon he's better than adequate, but he hasn't really played the position regularly for a while. He used to destroy his opponent fairly regularly.

Well that's what he was doing before Paddy came. I think he could be used more structurally but if that's his best role maybe that's all we can expect.

To add to this -

Marshall, games kicking at least 2 goals: 9
Campbell, games kicking at least 2 goals: 6

This means that both players kick 2+ goals every ~9.1 games. They are equally mediocre as forwards according to that metric.
