Autopsy Round 21, 2023 : Hawks roast the Pies

Thought the Hawks were brilliant today. Looked like a top vs 16th game. Accept hawks 1st vs pies 16th.
Sidebottom, Pendlebury, Adams, Nick Daicos and De Goey held to 8 touches in the 1st qtr! Zero influence.
As for Scilily I thought were we a touch arrogant not manning him up with one of our best defenders. No player in the comp has as bigger influence on his side than him.

As someone who didn’t watch the game, what was the difference in todays game compared to all your others? Pies a bit off or Hawthorn Premiership team?
We were one touch all day, didn’t fumble and hit most targets all day. A far cry from some other weeks and it makes all the difference.

Our new forward line structure worked best it has all year.

Midfield was in beast mode all day.

I loved that he was busting his arse and willing himself to a contest just to kill the footy. Really selfless and 100% buy in
So much better when he is playing higher up and leading hard at the footy. When he plays deep he trying to get in behind or engage the defenders body too often and is less effective

Amazing performance really proud today especially after last week. Really glad for Morrison whose a good afl player to play so well, Chad (it’s performance based contracts from here) and Kosi - just well done. Like I have said many times we keep cuts this year to the minimum keep the group building together. Imagine how much we would have won by with an electric small forward? Ian Turpie says, Nick Watson

CBA's (out of 30):
24 - Day
23 - Newcombe
22 - Worpel
21 - Nash

We didn't use any other midfielders.

Clearances:
7 - Day
7 - Worpel
6 - Newcombe
6 - Nash

Centre Clearances:
5 - Worpel
4 - Day
4 - Newcombe
4 - Nash

We smashed them in centre clearances: 18 to 3.

But strangely they smashed us in stoppage clearances: 16 to 32.

So in the end they won the total clearance tally by one.

We needed a signature win like this in front of a large crowd. Our collective disposal is still very much a work in progress & let’s face it, we are a bottom side, but I thought after the Richmond loss we may have folded for the season, so it’s good to see the team keep going and be rewarded for their efforts. Sam has done a remarkable job keeping everything upbeat despite a fairly ordinary on-field season & all the off field drama.

I may be in the minority, but I’d be happy to never see that retro jumper again. It looks cartoonish. Keep the traditional brown & gold, or the predominantly brown with gold stripes & numbers that the team wore around 2014-2017.

Lol honestly I think Ryan has more upside than King!

He could have had another 5 marks in F50. Hopefully AFL conditioning and his teammates not getting in his way in the pockets will see him grab them next year.
Could Ryan be that next forward we’re looking for? He’s 25 and has been impressive. But the search should still be on for a key CHF in the draft.

I saw that disparity between centre and stoppage clearances; it's not the first time this year that we've won the former and lost the latter.

The game was won by the mids and with Sic in the back.

How Sic was allowed to have such influence is beyond me.

Finn is by far the best stopper in the game.

Nash is becoming the best big body / creative outlet in the centre.

Kozi and Ryan… well done. Lewis is near the best fwd in the comp.

Whatever happens with our list. This game was awesome.

IMO: Ryan is a project player. If he commits to the AFL, which he has recently had a taste of, maybe in 2 years he could become of a quality that is worth being (IMO) a premiership player. Why? = He is far to thin And easily pushed off the ball drop.

Ramsden will eventually take a spot in the Hawks team. The guy has everything.

Ryan needs to be heavier / stronger while retaining his agility. It is a 2 year effort.

I wish him well.

I think our tackling was spot on today.

I mean, we've had games with double the tackle count this year- but our tackles today HURT. Our lads are building into formidable beasts.
The goal saving tackle that Scrim laid in the last quarter was brilliant. An example of the pressure we applied all day.

What an excellent performance by the boys yesterday!!

Josh Weddle spoke earlier in the week on a podcast about wanting to bring the energy with ball movement and kick 20 goals, which was their target. We certainly did that yesterday and Weds took the game on. None of our younger boys were overawed by the big crowd and big occassion.

Finn played a selfless role on Daicos and he is one of the most dedicated with his roles. Frenchie played the Daicos role at training on Thursday for Finn to practise and hone his skills for the job.

Sicily played as a free because of the role of Blanck being back in the team. Blanck doesn't get the plaudits, but he allows Sicily to play as a 3rd tall defender who can get off the chain.

Nash went to De Goey and did a tremendous job. Nashy has grown in leaps and bounds with more midfield time this year and his big frame was exceptional around the centre clearances.

Croc and Wardy's running and efforts were absolutely wonderful to watch. Second year players who are bringing terrific work rate and developing their role as link players.

Scrimma's tackle on a charging De Goey in the last was brilliant. His one on one tackling isn't always a strength but he made this one stick.

Speaking of Sticks, he's providing contests and creating opportunities for himself and his team mates. All this without a pre season and time in the gym

Kosi as a mobile second ruck gave us a different look and he was able to play his role really well.

Noodle came back in and we won centre clearances. His combinations and synergy with Day, Duke, Nash and Worps is why he gets picked. Won centre clearances by 15, kicking 3.2 from that source to 0, which was a massive turn around.

HMo, who still has a year to run on his contract, played another really good game. Played well against Carlton and again today. He's been a victim of circumstances this year with Amon and Ward being used primarily on the wings. He went back to Box Hill, performed his role, kept his head up and made sure to make his opportunity count.

Sam and the coaches used yesterday as a test to see how our systems and standards compared as a guide for next year. The future looks bright and the ride, while filled with bumps along the way, is showing we're going in the right direction.

It's not only not the first, it's happened almost every week. It's not as though we can't win clearances around the ground, but I have a feeling we just don't rate em as highly as we do centre clearances.

Is there any talk that you guys are load training for finals?
You've looked flat 2 weeks in a row.

Any team playing to win against the hawks must put time into Sicily. First Ross and now Craig have been torched by their arrogance.

I'd be wrapt of I was a Hawks fan right now
A young talented side with more young talent to come , Mitchell is a smart coach, new the game plan to beat the pies and the players executed it , bottom of the ladder or not Mitchell has his team playing a exciting brand
Of footy won't be a bottom 4 side for much longer.

Looking forward to watching On the Couch, AFL 360, Footy Classified, Sunday Footy Show etc this week
As if they would ever talk about Hawthorn, the focus will be port and Collingwood losing 6 games between in the last month.

WOW Had to beat the pies and the umpires how could they pull a second free kick and goal from that group of players? ABSOLUTE DISGRACE!!! 2 free gimmes to the pies and we still won! Great game.....Daicos is a princess......
Thing is literally at the same time Seamus pulled Daicos down one of our players got slung violently to the ground too yet the umps in their bias didn't use common sense and cancel out the Daicos free. That's what riled me up watching it, it was probably worse than what Seamus did as well. There were 2 umpires there and they couldn't work out the correct decision?. So happy we stuck it up Mummas boys ( Daicos brothers) arses with Morrison's goal.
