Autopsy Round 21, 2023 : Hawks roast the Pies

Didn't realise until I just looked but we had just 5 players with more than 100 games experience out there yesterday. Collingwood had 12, with 10 who have over 150 games experience.

The crazy part about some of the footy we've been able to play this year is that we are almost 10 months younger than the next youngest side, and 11 games less experienced. Not really core older players surrounded by youth either, the youth are the core.

We were over 3 years younger than Pies on the week; that's right over.

I think we are getting a pretty good template for how we can win games in 2024.

1. Give Sicily enough support in the backline so he can play his natural, intercepting game (he will win us 5+ games next year off his own boot doing this). For me this means Blank and Scrimmers are automatic selections.

2. Play three talls in the forward line. Lewis, Ryan plus Kossy/new recruit.

3. Get the balance between new bodies and veterans correct. Having Morrison and Scrimmers in the team really helped us with our ball movement and tempo this week.

4. Back our midfield to beat anyone.
5. Play with passion "on edge" dare i say it the unsociable hawks.

I agree with all your points the club definatly know the formula that works! Nailing down the Full Back and Full Forward position, secure the spine to release those match winners (Sicily, Lewis) will be the key to challenge for finals next season. The personal is still up for debate but they all earnt themselves another week.

- Worpel the club must secure his signature he is pivotal player.
-Wingard last month gets him a 2yr performance incentives contract i imagine.

Couldn't help but notice that Reeves was jumping at the centre bounce, especially in the second half. That gave him/us an awesome advantage. Comapre that to stoppage clearances where it was so much harder for him to jump, and where Collingwood had the advantage.

Apropos of nothing...

Just listening to the ABC call of the game.

All I can say (not that it will be news to anyone) is that Mick Malthouse is a senile old ****wit...

My absolute favourite thing about sitting in the stands was everytime one of our players did something good, at least 3 or 4 of his teammates would get over to him to head ruffle or bum tap. The togetherness amongst the players was fabulous to witness

That combined with the energy everyone bought to the contest, was what won us the day

Ohhhh you can see the future, and my god is it bright

The culture this young group has created is so strong. This is why I backed Sammy’s decision to move on some older guys in the offseason. Most of the group are between 18-25, they all seem like a close group.

Was about to post the same. In front of me a couple of times - a tackle, a smother - the boys looked ecstatic for the player who performed the action, like, huge grins on their faces. It put a huge grin on my face too.

I don't understand your argument. Wingard is a known quantity - why is a low draft pick and probable list clogger clearly worth much more? There is an outside chance that Wingard will be part of our next premiership team. He is two years younger than Breust, who I thought might not see another season. But Breust has proved me wrong and I think there is every chance that Wingard will do the same to you.

Firstly, regarding low draft picks. They aren't as bad as they seem. For example, Sicily and Lewis.

Secondly, this is only my opinion but I have not liked what I have seen from Wingard since he arrived at the club. He's been there 5 years. His best games have been at the end of the year when Clarkson was departing and now that he is coming out of contract. I know this may seem cynical but it happens in all sports all the time. I accept that people completely disagree with this but that is my opinion.

It’s in the back of my mind too. Hawks have a habit of storming home even when finals are done. Which is why the tanking talk is just talk

If freo win tonight we can win last three with no draft disadvantage

Was it Adams that ran into Nash's shoulder and hit the deck like a sack of spuds?

Sent from my SM-S901E using Tapatalk
yep.

Nash was pretty much stationary, but bending down.

Adams ran headfirst into his shoulder for a free.

A bit ridiculous

I agree with Wingard we haven't always got the best out of him, every time he puts a good month together the body fails. Speculation it's bad luck or he doesn't put in enough extra rehab / strength and conditioning training.

Right now with Bruest age and the limited small crops coming thru, I would be in favour of a reduced wage with performance incentives attached Games, Goals, B&F votes. He can play when he applies him self put it back on the player.

Should we list the names of the late draft picks that didn’t come good? Not sure the server will handle it.

Many of Port fans want him and if they want him, they need to pay up or wait for the news at end of trade period for the news we have signed him for 1 yr with triggers for 2nd or some one else in flag window has paid a fair price to sign him. Have seen Dons fans being interested in him.

Port has 37,42 and 73. I can settle for 42 or F3+73.

FYI, this was prior to his run of recent games
Would rather keep Chad if its any thing less than a 2nd round pick. I think he has that xfactor and rises for finals.

Doesn't get it because he's a second game no-name.

When if anyone should get a free that's there it's the second gamer, the 200 game superstar will probably be fine without it,

I'm going to quote myself here. But on a third watch how dare an umpire not pay a clear free kick like that front on contact to a second game player who is off the mid season draft.

Ryan is playing for his career.

For the hope of getting another contract.

Down at Port Fairy for the weekend with some Richmond tragics. Caught the first and fourth quarter. Everyone massively impressed with our youngsters.

Just watched the replay, **** me, what a GAME!

Most enjoyable football we've played in years. A full four quarter effort. Genuinely didn't think we'd have that in us for another few years.

There is no cap on this group. They can achieve greatness.

That had a wicked atmosphere that game. Even the commentators were feeling it! For those who didn't think it was loud enough must've had one of those big ass earmuffs on! İt was electric everytime we scored!
I don't get why some of our supporters think we don't make enough noise or we don't turn up big numbers in marquee games? Even as a bottom four side for a few years, as chad eluded to, we DO turn up in good numbers!

Especially noticeable when Breust kicked a goal. You could feel it through the TV.

People on Twitter and Reddit blaming Blanck for his injury, saying that it needs to be investigated.

Blanck is a monster and all he did was brace, if he wanted to hurt Naicos, he would’ve easily knocked him out cold.
If Daicos wants to try playing full forward he can deal with colliding with a full back.

Had no business going down there. If that was McStay leading out at full forward it would have been a nothing event and they'd get up.

I don't understand why Collingwood didn't either just keep Daicos on the ball and have him do what Sam Mitchell used to do when tagged just drag his tagged into the ruckmans tap zone and cause congestion. Daicos should have been trying to get in Day and Newcombe's way.

The other alternative is put Daicos half back and have him follow wingard or Moore or even Bruest would mean those guys wouldn't have space and Collingwood could swap and change who is the loose rebounder. The risk there is that Finn would be beating Daicos in the air and for strength most times so Daicos could have ended up with 4 kicked on him and even further embarrassed.

We were unrelenting.

1. The best thing about this match was that Collingwood came back, put the pressure on us, started a fight...and we said, yep, here's another 3 goals!
They got consecutive goals 3 times during the match and we met each challenge with more intensity, more goals. Nice.

2. Our midfield completely mauled them, and for once we had 3 talls who played their roles and this brought our 3 smaller forwards into the game.
Day, Nash, Newcombe and Worpel - I'd put those 4 up against any mids in the competition at the centre clearances/stoppages.

3. Ryan giving us exactly what we've been lacking - a 2nd tall forward who can mark the high ball.
He's going to be so good for us.

4. James Sicily.

5. We have a lot of talent, but it's immature and inexperienced. If Ryan can perform as a tall forward like David Hale did, it brings a better balance to our structure and suddenly the whole team starts to perform closer to its potential.
