Review Round 22, 2021 vs Carlton

Quite a bizarre game - I thought the weather conditions were absolutely conducive for a 10+ goal reaming today. I also expected Carlton to come out hot but I thought we would at least match their intensity. We clearly didn't for the first 28 game minutes or so. It was quite pathetic really. If we turn up like that in a final against a hot midfield like Melbourne or the Dogs, we're down by at least 5-6 goals and you're not making that up against a quality team in a final.

It is so exciting to see Aliir return to his early season form. He's been good all year but he's taken it up a few notches the last two weeks. When he is playing like that, he's borderline unstoppable and it makes our front half press work near perfectly.

I think Butters will get a week for his hit on Saad. No concussion, Saad got back up and retaliated at Butters a minute later, so impact was clearly minimal. Won't get two weeks but can definitely see him missing the final game of the regular season. Would be a shame because he's such a crucial link man between the midfield and the forward 50.

We are getting run back into our side. Not from personnel, but stylistically. Using the "stand" rule to our advantage, consistency looking for a runner coming through to handball off the mark getting a few extra metres which can throw defensive zones out of whack. When the game is played on our terms, we are as good as any side in the competition. I think we forget how good we really can be in large part because our team has been largely decimated by injury for a good 12-14 weeks of the year, it is only the last month or so we have started to get everyone back and the chemistry is building.

I have long not been a fan of our 3 KPF 2 ruck structure. However, it seems to be working quite well at this point. I don't like David King's commentary of Port this season, but he's long said that clubs need to have a point of difference separating them from everyone else to win in the finals. I really feel as though our tall forward brigade is that point of difference for us. Last year we won games by having a high press and manic pressure, and then would get the ball over the top of the last line of defence and have our quick smalls run onto the ball for goal scoring opportunities. This year we are more refined - holding our defensive press a little deeper with the addition of Aliir, and relying on our talls to either mark the ball inside 50 or bring it to ground for a stoppage where we're pretty strong. No other team in the league has the defensive aerials to match up on all of Ladhams, Marshall, Dixon and Georgiades. Furthermore, the ability these guys have at ground level is immense, meaning we lose no defensive pressure by being tall. If we need an extra runner in the finals, bring one on as a sub at 3/4 time. But right now, our tall forwards are just so physically imposing that we are grinding teams down. I guarantee that every defensive back 6-7 that has played us in the last month or so has been feeling it in their bodies big time the day after playing us.

Great to get a top 4 spot wrapped up before the final game of the season. Now with a win against the Dogs we will be top 2 with two home finals regardless of other results in the final week. Our destiny is in our hands and we need to take advantage of the opportunity that has been presented to us.

Seriously however, he is awesome and just getting into freaky good mode at the right time of the year

Aliir is having a quintessentially Port Adelaide season.

Start the season like a bat out of hell.

Battle through the mid part of the season with patchy form.

Start hitting top gear just as finals are approaching.

* All he needs to do is screw something up that results in us being eliminated from the finals by less than a goal and he'll have perfectly embodied the club in a season.

Amon was good last night but if there is one area that he needs to work on is his kicking for goal. He kicks with a natural arch so he just needs to go for it more often. I have noticed that he tends to punch the ball a bit too hard when he sees the goals. He just needs to guide it a bit more like he does when he is passing to a teammate. If he can do that he will be All Australian.

As a side note, I like SPP attitude to collect 30 possies in a losing team. I also wish Kane Farrell was still running out there. Him, Willem Drew, Miles Bergman, and to a lesser extent Lachie Jones (due to injuries) were the players that stepped up mid year when senior players went out. These kids minimized the impact of our long injury list and despite not being able to knock of a top team, it has given our squad greater depth. I just want Jackson Mead to get a good run because of his inside ability and his ball use. Also can't wait for junior Burger to develop physically and his brother to follow suit.

I still think we are one big defender short for the future. Hope that we reconcile that next year...

These would be selling like hotcakes!

A missed opportunity to collaborate with Studio Peyo.

Could have called him Smurph and released a limited edition Smurf holding a football and wearing a Carlton jumper.

Yes, our destiny is with us. As it should be.

I remember two shots on goal both from the eastern side at the River Torrens end. One barely a behind and the other OOF. That particular part of the AO is the graveyard for all left footers heading for goals so Karl is not alone in stuffing up his shots for goals. Perhaps he needs to change his technique or even try to pass it off. Even perhaps getting specialist coaching from the master, Buddy!

Amateur hour in the commentary last night crapping on about the live ladder despite it making absolutely no difference to our top 2 chances

Ended up being up to Mark Ricciuto to point out that percentage didn't actually matter after they spent what seemed like an eternity rambling on about it ...

Wouldn't expect anything else from the club that released dedicated merchandise to celebrate the three wooden spoons they 'won'
