Losing Marshall hurt us
Hope he is ok
Lost our tall link up player
After that I noticed JHF playing chf like a mini Wayne Carey
So strong and balanced overhead with brilliant recovery after flying
Freak
Thats bullshit , Our pressure at forward line was pathetic when he was there and Dees were transitioning the ball so easy . When Narkle came in we had better pressure up there and kept the ball in Dee's territory. If Marshall would have been there we would have lost by 2-3 goals .

If Jones stopped dropping marks he'd be fine. If Farrell stopped fumbling/spilling balls inside D50 he'd be elite. If Bergman was more effective by foot he'd be elite. Evans on the other hand is just doing things right.
Rubbish call on Bergman bro he’s all round elite

Melbourne exposed the blueprint to beat us for more capable sides in the coming weeks imo win the contested ball, tackle count and pressure & kick away which they couldn't manage.

MG back will obviously help, however I can see Esava's piss blasting being an issue in finals.

Most people are happy to write them off but there's a reason why Boak and Dixon have lasted so long as AFL footballers. Even though they are well past their best they both fight and give relentless effort and find a way to contribute. Both were key players tonight. We'd be a far better team if we had their attitude across the board.

Terrible spectacle, a lot of our boys were well down on previous weeks.

To the naked eye, we just seem to struggle for large parts when playing at the G. Yes, Melbourne brought the heat for the majority of the contest, but our game-plan looks unconvincing at best.

I generally don’t like to bag the umps, but they were awful tonight. Big Max is a superb ruckman, but he clearly got a fair leg up from the boys in green tonight.

I think the term ‘Generational talent’ can be over used, but I think the draft year recruiting reports surrounding JHF were 100% on the money, the kid is very much a generational talent, and is well on his way to becoming one of the clubs all time greats.

We went back to using a lot of short, slow kicks tonight, especially using Burgoyne out near the boundary line. Don’t know if it helps or hinders us overall. I guess it’s ok if we’re competing strongly when the next kick inevitably is high down the line, but when we get outmarked in those contests it’s infuriating. The thing I noticed in the last quarter was that we were spoiling Gawn and their other talls much better in those pack situations. Sweet especially. That wasn’t happening for the first three quarters.

I rate that win
That was the Dee’s grand final
They threw everything at us
But now they are gone
Thought viney was going to cry post game
And there’s bad blood between the clubs
They used to go after Robbie gray bad
And umpires gave him nothing
Thought Gawn tired & we slowly got on top

And Pickett is a sniper
Should be cited for his sling/ tunnel thing
Very very very ugly
Slightly more rotation and Bergmans in a wheel chair for life

Tough game , watching the press conferences Goodwin was happy with how they played, obviously disappointed to lose but happy with their desire , made it hard for us . Gawn too good for Sweet although Sweet didn’t give in and broke even in the last quarter .
Gawn best on for me , dropping back into defence , it was almost like you had to get a goal when he was having a break .
Boak was great and kept us in it early in the first quarter when they were pumping .
Marshall started good and his intensity seemed up so was disappointing to see him subbed off , seemed innocuous, maybe it’s becoming serious .
Viney was good for them , Pickett , Petty and Neal Bullen all South Aussies the p*#ks .
Drew was alright but faded out a bit and Wines less prolific this week. Burgoynes been worrying me a little bit, just his ability to find a player when he’s got the ball , Franky E was a bit quiet too and Mead although he lifted as the game went on .
Rioli was quiet really and missed a real gettable shot .
Ratogalea was down a bit but still did enough for another shot ,goal kicking practice though.
Dixon wasn’t great but he was still important , those two goals were from good play and goals were like diamonds tonight .
Houston was good as usual , Bergman was good s usual , really growing as a player.
Farrell was ok , had a couple of moments on Pickett who was the most dangerous small forward on the ground . Come our way please .
BZT was fairly decent apart from a few moments in the last quarter .
Jones was half decent , Logan Evans half decent .
Rozee was decent , hard working without being brilliant.
Butters the same with that great goal when we really needed it.
Horne Francis a class above , one of those players if he’s near the ball he’s probably going to get it . Startling to firm as my best player since Russell Ebert.
Narkle was lively in the last , I find him better than Franky E myself , maybe there’s something I don’t see .
Byrne Jones deserves a special mention , his hard work nd a couple of moments of inspiration were crucial.
Allir was decent without being great , he has to hold all his marks to really consolidate his status .
So yea without too many great performances and with Melbourne having one of its better performances. I’m pretty happy with the win .

6-1 in games decided by 10 points or less this season. It's a good trend to have. The best teams always win the close games because they know how to win when the pressure is on.

Ugly game - lots of players had down games, but they also stepped up in some big moments. Take Dixon for instance - did sweet fück all the majority of the game, but bobbed up twice and made the most of those two goal scoring opportunities.

I can't recall a game in which so many players underperformed relative to expectation, but they still got the win. The small forwards of Rioli, DBJ, Narkle and Evans were pretty much invisible tonight, and Wines, Drew and Mead were quite pathetic in midfield. Combine that with the reaming Port got from the umpires and it's quite surprising they actually were able to find a way to win.

Ratugolea took a few nice marks but someone needs to get him in contact with Ben Perkins to correct his goal kicking. I have no belief he will fix it, but if he can, he will become a very, very good KPF.

Thought Sweet got dominated by Gawn today irrespective of the umpires. Will be interesting to see how Soldo goes tomorrow in the SANFL because I still think he's a better ruck than Sweet.

To the positives: Logan Evans showed some slick moves tonight. He's getting more confidence, looks a natural down back. Bergman and Lachie Jones are playing some really good footy right now and though Zerk-Thatcher made a few errors, he seems to impact plenty of contests with his go-go-gadget arms. Aliir is also finding some really good form as the year goes on.

The leaders of Rozee, Butters and JHF stood up in the final quarter when the game was there to be won. That's exactly what you want. At the end of the day, we can talk about players 16-23 inclusive in the side who have had shit games, but that is insignificant in comparison to the performances of the top 5 players in the team. If your top players play well, generally you're going to have an excellent chance to win.

Lastly, shout out to Boak. I have been a massive critic of his, and I still think he makes a fair few errors, but his work rate is as good as anyone on the team, and I would suggest his form right now is significantly better than last year. He should imo get another 1 year deal.

Hung up the match thread, couldn't keep going, just find us so hard to watch when we are choked and we allow opposition sides to get on top of us like that. They get in our heads and turn us into a scrappy, messy, mistake ridden side. Our gameplan has zero plan B, and we just struggle big time when the oppo plays that type of game and works that hard on the ground. We just got extremely lucky we held on all night despite playing shit.

The good though was the grit in the last quarter, despite some phenomenally bad umpiring killing us in several key moments. Rozee stood up. JHF was outstanding. Plus the defence held up (except for BZTs 2 brain fades).

Well if they wanna achieve something from here, they only need to win 5 more now. It's there in front of them. Sitting in 2nd, basically locked into top 8 now. The chance against the Non-Vic top 4 has suddenly opened up things. Tell ya what though, lose another ****ing showdown though and/or drop a key final all hell is set to break loose.
Aren’t you the same guy who said you weren’t watching any more of the game and that we’d “lose comfortably”

Thought Sweety had a huge last quarter and the midfield was up to it in the second half. it must of been an AFL record for stoppages. Having JHF swing across half back and impact was what won us the game. Thought we milked the clock to perfection.
