Two observations of team improvement from the Cats game that I'll be watching for again in the Lions game.

Both these mostly missing key skills have been pet peeves of mine for quite a while and hoping that we'll see them happening again with our boys.

Also a third point that irks me, which our forwards really need to do in their set shot routine to help with consistent accuracy.

1. Shepherding - Pleasingly, I saw quite a few instances of this against the Cats.

2. Visual Coms - Through the middle and occasionally forward, I saw that players looking to receive a kick would give the kicker a subtle point to where they want the ball kicked to them as the kicker looks in their direction.

Two important parts of good teams that will improve the more we use them.

3. Set Shot Technique - There are a few points here, but for now I'd be happy to see players line up, walk straight, keep their eyes down on the ball and kick straight through.

It annoys me when I see players today only look down at the ball at the last second before they kick their set shot at goal.

Now that we have a notable goal kicking technique coach at Moorabbin, I'm hoping we see this improve in the coming off season.

What other key parts of the game do you all think the Saints need to bring in to the way we play?

I think we can take the game right up to the Lions. They have been hurting us with their transition marking, but we have been getting better in this space recently with Sharman, Marshall and Wood amongst others bobbing up with marks or protecting a team mate.

But Lions have many marking options around the ground, so I think if Jack Hayes could come in if he is fit enough and after his 6 goals in the VFL game, as will be another contested marker around the ground for us, can do some chop out rucking and is a good kick for goal. He might even be a good Tactical Sub for the Lions game.

These are just a few thoughts that I wanted to share.

Cheers. Let's Go Sainters.

If RTB is sticking with this year being “ A year of Exploration” then he really needs to have a look at Hayes and see if he is a viable option to help out Romo as a Ruck forward. It’s not such a bad game to do it all things considered and timing is as good as it gets for Hayes as he seems to have hit good form of late ( not just goals by tackles / forward pressure etc).

RTB would have to be tempted to have a look at Hayes after 6..! Membrey and King working well together though and Sharman such a reliable set shot plus flexibility keeps him in. I’d just leave it as it is after an agonising team meeting

It's funny with Hayes. I didn't think he was that brilliant but just knows where to be at just the right time. I guess that's a talent in itself. I do like him though. He's got real finals experience in a side that doesn't have much of it on the books. He was a leader in his SANFL sides and a big game player. He's still firing on three cylinders at the moment.

If we can get him in for some finals games he could be a real wildcard for us. he won the Oatley (SANFL Norm Smith) in a landslide in a GF with 26 possessions, 7 clearances and 1.2 playing with a fractured leg that stopped him training before the match. He's the type of fairytale player like a Stewie Dew who comes in and makes history.

Brisbane having the same conversation they will come out fierce.

There’s two ways to look at this. Either we can rest all our key players and give their bodies 2 weeks off, or we can go up there with our best team and a plan and see how we stack up and continue to build some cohesion.

I fall in the camp of rest some sore players and have a look at others.

Out: Ross (inj.), King, Sharman, Hill, Webster.

In: Hunter, Caminiti, Billings, Byrnes & Paton. Hayes to the sub.

Marshall is in all Australian contention I’d give him another week to cement his claim. If he’s sore though let Tom Campbell have a game.

We could also consider releasing Windhager into the Seb Ross role and bringing Coffield in down back. But, I think Windy should be given as much opportunity as possible to settle in to his new role.

Still think we can push the Lions. What’s the point of having solid depth if you don’t use it to your advantage?
I like that

I like that

Windhager has been fantastic since going to HBF. It's dangerous messing with what's working but he looks like the player most likely to seamlessly take his spot. I guess you put Paton into that HBF role that he's playing mids.

Windhager started the game vs the cats on the wing and ran behind the ball straight off the centre bounce.

Sorry , Paton is not in my best team , just GOP

A few interesting stats.
We are no 1 in the AFL for frees against. That says to me we are an extremely disciplined side.
No 1 for least points against per game at 71.5.
4th for tackles
1st for marks
3rd for contested possesions

Interesting we're 18th for clearances.
Just says to me that we are controlling games and playing them on our terms.

There is a week off after. With the possible exception of King (because of his shoulder and Harris Andrews), I wouldn't be resting players. Perhaps a more cautionary stance on niggles. Maybe. But maintain the momentum and see if you can build confidence with a good performance at the Gabba.

Clark into the 22 for Ross.

Billings as the sub.

Imagine of we could get up the stats ladder on clearances -the flag would be in the bag

Brissy playing for a home final, don't see us winning this one away from home.

The premiers playing for finals...can't see them losing this unfortunately. We can beat them, those flaky ****ers will fall over.

Don't get me wrong they're definitely gettable if we're playing our best footy and kick straight this time, but they're also second on the ladder for a reason, not really comparable to Geelong.

They are a better team than us and they are in great form. Our defensive game plan will limit the damage but they should comfortable beat us.
