I personally don't care what the losing margin is...its about continuous improvement for me. Even from our first 2 games we have shown that our side is better than last season. All I want is for us to continually get better each game and that's all I am looking for in this game as well. Some posters expectations from our team this season is astounding and somewhat unknowledgeable regarding football development.
"All For One" and keep on the strategy of learning & improving every game we play this year. We keep doing that and one day (whenever that may be) we will be a force to be reckoned with. Just gotta be patient unlike some.

Not really concerned about the result this week but am concerned about how we go about it.

I know it seems overly dramatic, but I honestly believe this game will be decided within the first ten minutes.

If we come out and hit them hard, it’s game on and we could be a chance of making it a genuine contest

Or, we get blasted off the park and the game is over at quarter time. This week there will be no come from behind thingo. Not at adelaide oval

Hoping and expecting a big response from our skippers (beams, zorks and Harris). All need to have big games.

Need walker to lift badly. He doesn’t need to be a star, because he isn’t one. But he has the tools to be a very handy player but I’m still unsure about him. Needs to work his butt off to make aerial contest after contest. Only needs to clunk a handful of contested marks and kick a goal or two. But would just love for him o be constantly leading up around centre half forward/wing making contests for our smalls to mop up

Hipwood really needs to lift. Same as above. Get involved and be a little selfish, impose himself on the contest.

If these guys can give us a chance at bringing the ball to ground, we have the little guys to cause some reeeaaallll big headaches in our foward 50

Also would love to see fagan isolate guys like beams/robinson/Cameron/Christensen and even Rayner deep forward at times. He did it with Charlie and bundy last week and it was very effective

I thought Walker did do that on Saturday night with the exception of kicking the goals, which he should have had given he missed two very gettable shots.

I like Walker a lot and personally don't think he is too far off being that consistent 2-3 goal forward we've been crying out for, provided he is left forward. He has the requisite tools for a KPF with the added benefit of being able to give Stef a chop out for short bursts.

Would much prefer we were playing the Manangatang thirds!:(
Manangatang thirds +25

We are going to get pulverised this week. Port Adelaide would have this pencilled in as a percentage booster. Harmless hijinx with where we play McStay / Walker and a defensive set up where our backs play 10 metres off their men in the hope that our midfielders can pressure Port’s inside 50 delivery sufficiently to set Andrews and co up for a regular intercept mark and an effective rebound just won’t cut it. Port Adelaide are everything we are not ... a fair dinkum football team coached by an old school Camperdown boy. They will run hard, tackle, use the ball cleanly and murder us ruthlessly every time we hand the ball to them. They would beat St.Kilda and Melbourne by 10 goals at home so heavens knows what they will do to us.

The big question - can we win?

Realistically, not likely. The best chance I can see is Port underestimating us and writing this one off as a foregone conclusion. But if we go out there hard, they have 3 quarters to make their way back in. Ideal path to victory (excluding a 10 goal to nil first quarter):

First quarter - Port win by 6. Second quarter - Port now up by 10. Third quarter - Port still up by 10 and just coasting. Fourth quarter - we blast them away with 6 quick goals and by the time Port realise, it's too late to come back and we finish with a 2 goal win.

Good news: Port have lost at home twice in the last 5 games.
Bad news: their last two wins at home have been by a total of 165pts.
Good news: Port’s last home game at Adelaide oval at 1:15pm on a Saturday they lost
Bad news: they’ve only played two games at that time/day/venue – their only win was by 72pts

Would much prefer we were playing the Manangatang thirds!:(

TOOLEYBUC-MANANGATANG now MM, but looking for an omen bet, my final factual news is that BOTH last year and again this year Port have defeated Sydney and Freo in rounds 1 & 2. In 2018 they again play their round 3 game at the Adelaide Oval - the GOOD NEWS is they lost last years corresponding home game by 17 points!

GO LIONS!!! [by 17 points!]

Games like this, this year, are not about winning. They are sbout being competitive - and how long we can be competitive for.

That said, and tho I do not expect it, if we are competitive for long enough we can win.

That is the goal.

I really wish they use Matt Eagles at some point. He has presence, a bit of x factor, and a mature body. Our defence needs some mongrel. He reads the play well.

Hopefully Port aren't really switched on and we have a good start. Zac Bailey would be a good selection.
What’s the X factor with eagles? His hair?

This is a similar view to mine, not seeing the need/desire to rush in every kid on our list. We have spent years of "getting games into the kids" and I was all aboard with that. It was important for our age profile to get those games in. Now, those kids like Taylor, McStay, Andrews, Hippy, Robertson, Gardiner have built that early base, and need to continue onto the next step. That involves putting some consistency together and being competitive. Filling the team with the next lot of kids will just keep them on the same endless loop of being flogged. Not yet ready to focus on wins and ladder position, but definitely ready to try and improve percentage and competing. The best of the kids will get a go, and top prospects like Rayner will get those games while being good enough to contribute. Others can filter through at a more sensible pace without killing us on the scoreboard. It will do more for the team and club to have those second, third and 4th year kids playing decent football than clocking up miles on the rookies.

In: McInerney, Robinson
Out: Rayner (rested), Mayes

FB: Walker, McStay, Andrews
HB: Robertson, Gardiner, Hodge
C: Taylor, Zorko, Bewick
HF: Robinson, Cameron, McCluggage
FF: McInerney, Hipwood, Christensen
Foll: Martin, Berry, Beams
Int: Cox, Lester, Mathieson, Witherden

We need another KPD to play and Walker is the only real option.

Missed the game last week completely (not a lot of connectivity on Vodaphone in Kowanyama!) and not sure if I would have preferred to have watched it or just read about it (actually I am - I would have preferred to have been able to watch it).

Expecting a win - nope (but would be nice of course ... although I am not sure if it would be good for our development or not)

Expecting a close finish where the Power just manages to squeak out a win (due to a dodgy home umpiring decision of course!) - I wouldn't object

Expecting a decent contest - therin lieth the dream (ie this is my hope/expectation) - I want Port to come away from this game taking the Lions more seriously than they did before the game and relieved that they don't have to face us at the Gabba later in the year)

Expecting a thorough beating from a professional crusher of lower teams - certainly on the cards but I will be disappointed if we bring our own witches hats to the game.

Expecting a total humiliating thrashing - not acceptable (unless we lose four players to injury in the first quarter in which case pfffft)

Will get to see the game this time so that is a bonus.

Go Lions :fire:

Port/Lions by not the faintest idea.

Lions by 8. I recon we are a good chance this week. Beams will be a lot better for his first two games. Stef will dominate ruck. Our sloppy turnovers will reduce as early season rustiness improves. Port will also take us lightly too with us being wooden spooners.

Arguably our most important player this week is Stef. Dixon rucked last week v Sydney, holding his own against Sinclair (who is nowhere near the level of Stef on his day).

If Stef can get the better of Dixon in the ruck - first hand on the ball and putting the ball down the throats of our onballers, as well as beating him around the ground - it will go a long way getting us within the 47.5 pt line (which I think should actually be a couple of goals more).

This year we have to eliminate blow outs.

This is precisely the type of game where we need to minimise the difference between our best and our worst.

We should be aiming to match Port in contested ball and clearances, if we can the margin shouldn't be too big.

Honestly I'm more worried about next week.

Port by 30.

This side was full of kids and we came to Adelaide Oval and stoned the crows. We were deficient in every department but had enormous heart and followed a plan. I watched the game and we tackled hard and importantly, ran Adelaide off their legs. That’s what we want to see against Port Adelaide this week. We want to see the Lions execute a game plan for 4 quarters and I want to see some RUN. That would make a loss a fraction more bearable.

Not expecting a win but think that this is a really important game for our season. If we get smashed then there is the possibility the boys drop their heads if we compete for the entire game it is a great building block.

Contested possessions, clearances and tackles will be the key stats for me. If we can match them there that will be a win in my book.

We don't have Dancin Doug Hawkins this week like back in 95.
