AFL Autopsy Round 3: 21 point loss to Bulldogs

It’s difficult to know how to read the first three weeks from 20,000km away and not being able to watch any games. I suppose I am astonished at the side getting within 16 and 21 points in consecutive weeks with such low numbers from the midfield and what seems like incredibly poor decision making, field kicking and marking?
Which is the silver lining I guess. It is clear that there is plenty of improvement to be had if the players start to play to their potential. Right here right now, it appears that many are down on output and there is an obvious lack of cohesion. It isn't panic stations yet but we really need a win next week.

Just how can they be confused, they are at the club pretty much everyday of the week for 11 months of the year yet they are confused, clearly we need to review what they are doing in their time at the club because it clearly isn't working, maybe they are having too many meetings or too many photoshots or spending too much time in the Hanger and not enough time on the ground.

Good post.

Go through the corridor if it's there, if it's not...don't. Yet we try to force the issue despite the risk/reward being heavily against taking this option.

How many times did a player mark & give an incessant handball off to a player that wasn’t on??

Players not having any awareness of opponents around them, yet ok with giving the ball off to first bloke running pass.

Assess & make a decision.

We'll beat Port now.
thats what im afraid of, we'll see which port turns up on match day, on another note the coaching of Worsfold seem very similar to what he was doing is his last couple of years at WC, tactically soft and seeming to rely on the skills of the team to get the job done which is ok when you have the best team but is patchy at other times

It’s not about being good enough, it’s about teaching him a lesson.

You missed my point

There’s about a dozen players ahead of him that have greater need for ‘lesson’.

Time to swallow your pride Woosha. Hooker must go back. Will free up Hurley to be more damaging and de-clutter our fwd line.

Yep agree the 3 talls isn't working.

Just have Joe and Stewart as our 2 talls and the rest of the fwd line filled with small guys like Tippa,Fantasia,Green etc

This^^

Why blindly handpass backwards or into trouble. We have no composure with the ball ATM and opposition clubs know it and put extra numbers back and wait for the inevitable turnover.

The amount of times we went to a 2-on-1 to a small player when Bellchambers was one out with a midget frustrated me. Oh well, we'll be back.

Also, if something like tackles is a clear and measurable KPI relating to effort and intent; our players should be told that the top tackling teams are averaging 3ish per player in the 22.

Each player should be sent out with instructions to make at least those 3 tackles personally - win, lose, or draw. Hell, make the aim 1 single tackle per quarter for each player, surely that’s doable, then suddenly we’re the best tackling side in the comp.

Dew has the GC doing exactly this, and it keeps them in the game the entire time.

We’ve got far and away enough talent to win games, what we don’t have is the effort to ensure it happens. Too many waiting to add to their highlight reels instead of just working and doing the basics.

It’s a simple formula; focus on the basics - the rest of the flashy bits will come eventually - but the basics keep you in the game.

Would be great if we could lock the ball in our forward line. We have at least one too many non-chasers.

Merrett can look forward to being tagged again as it greatly improves the win percentage of the opposition.

People have pointed out Myers getting beaten 1 on 1 in the backline. I guess this means we have just accepted Hurley doing it.

We are being beaten by kids too. Belly should have snapped that kid in half. Hurley beaten in marking contests too.

At least Hartley punches the ball!!

i cant remember when it was but the ball was deeeeep in our forward line, like almost at the goal line. Dogs players picked it up and no joke side stepped through three of our fowards. Ball went down the other end and they kicked a goal. Seriously 3 players couldnt lay a finger. Inexcusable.

What's wrong with Zach Merrett? Seems uninterested and quiet. I know he's being tagged but his body language is down. Didn't even celebrate his goal.

Got completely out coached. Same as last week. We were beaten up front by their run out of defence. We didn't absolutely nothing to stop it. Again.

It seriously is that easy to beat us right now.
Just an observation... I was sitting behind the goals on level 3 today. On numerous occasions the WB would line up with 2-3 in our D50 when there was a centre bounce. They killed us on rebound/spread.

"Have been hanging around the fringes all day" - BT said this in the fourth and it was totally true, we hung in there without ever threatning. Exactly the same as the game vs Fremantle.

I don't think it's panic stations yet but I really hope we find our form in the next week or two, skill errors, inability to win on the inside and our lack of pressure is whats costing us games. Absolutely typified by Daniher's handball and Stewarts kick to no one in the fourth.

Great to see Raz back, brought some much needed intensity back to the side.

Raz was on from the get-go. I am continually impresses at how good he is. That left foot pass.

The tag he had today really wasn't that close if it was a tag at all. He just had a purely shit game.

Missed most of the game today, gladly by the scores, reaction etc. On a small side note, do we have a torpedo bloke as such? Do we try this? Especially kickouts, which seem to be a problem.

yeah he did, he could have changed the extra backman way before he did. And those 6 kick ins to start the game - he could have sent Hooker back for a quarter to settle everyone down. He could have said DON"T PLAY ON until the team is settled. He could have played a chaos card and just changed everyone around. Any thing to unsettle the Dogs in the first quarter would have done it.

I don't think you understand that if you can't hit the fat side of the barn then coaching adjustments dont make much of a difference. Coaching has nothing to do with turning over 6 kick ins in succession.

You know things are bad when the solution is to bring in Langford.
I wouldn't mind seeing Guelfi, Mutch or Clarke come in. I haven't seen much of them but at least there's a chance that they won't disappoint me.
