Seriously?

He had 20 possessions, an = game high 8 clearances, an = game high 8 tackles, a game high 24 hit outs. We didn't loose this game because Grundy didn't contribute.
Seriously? No wonder you're not rated on here. Grundy was woeful and cost us at least 5 goals that I can remember, didn't take a mark and was schooled in the last by a very average ruckman. Give it up fool

I went into this season with extremely low expectations. That third quarter alone was better than anything I expected to see from us this season and better than anything I can recall seeing from us in recent years. And that’s despite DeGoey and Grundy having relatively poor games and Adams having an absolute shocker.

It was a hugely positive team performance with so much for the players to learn and take encouragement from and for supporters to get excited about. Go Pies!

This was such a frustrating Game to lose its one we should have won . We should have been up by 50 pts at 3 quarter time but we weren't . Were a young team and if we play as well as we be did tonight we play finals it's that simple now I don't know about be all the doom and gloom calling for this kid that player to be dropped rah rah I was preparing for a Preety bleak year so I just enjoy watching us play an exciting brand win lose or draw

I reckon the same people who were predicting bottom 4 were the ones with borderline apocalyptic posting last night.I agree with your last statement, that’s how most of us should feel once we take the immediate emotion out of it.

I don't think Buckley is a great leader of people but he is a very astute observer of the game. He made the comment at half time that "We haven't seen the best of this team yet", alluding to our youth and inexperience playing this brand of football.

The last thing I am going to say is that the criticism of Henry is a little over the top. We're talking about a 17 year old. This was a finals type game and even though he made mistakes he didn't drop his head and his chase in the 3rd quarter showed that he will not stop trying even if he is low on confidence.

Mcrae is the perfect coach for this list with his development background. I don't know if he will take us to a flag but he is going to help these kids grow into their skin in a very healthy way.
Henry is 19! 20 in 4 months time. Not sure where the 17 comes from.

I do like the refusal of McFly to buy into any controversial topics raised by the footy journalists eg player contracts, Ginnivan's hair colour :D
I wonder when he talks about the defensive system failing and needing work, he's including the coaching panel and their teaching in that? We'll see I guess the next few times a team gets a run on against us. ;)

I thought in the last quarter we needed to shut the game down, and take the pace out the game. Probably play more of a ultra defensive game style in that last quarter. Get numbers back to help out the defenders, and make sure their key forwards had no impact in the last quarter...

Moore & De Goey had dirty days & Pendles & Sidey were relatively quiet.
For a first gamer, Reef showed good composure & Nick looked like he's played 100 games.
I liked IQ's game, especially in the first half.
As an indicator of where we're at, this game gave us a better insight that the last 2 games.
We're not actually too far off. Fly will do some tinkering to address the shortcomings.
The "chaos" game is all very well, but we still need quality disposal.
Other teams will look to get the ball over the back, as Geelong did in the last quarter, so the defence needs to be looked at.
We need Roughy back & it's worth looking at Kelly - he did OK in slippery conditions yesterday.
The forward line balance was not the same without McCreery & Kreuger.
Ash Johnson needs to come in next week, maybe at Henry's expense. Ollie struggled in the first half, but did some good things in the 3rd quarter, including the chase down of Selwood.
Overall, we're progressing well. We saw good signs & some exciting footy, but ran out of steam & came up short against a quality opponent.

We lost the game because we spent $1mill on a guy who breaks even with journeymen ruckman, while the Cats spent less than that on a guy who kicks six goals and wins the game off his boot.

Re the relative pay scales, pre-pandemic cuts Cameron was reputedly on $1.4m, and Grundy on $900k.

Whatever the rights and wrongs of Grundy’s salary, and it may be $100-$200k overs, it’s a fair bit below Cameron. Who doesn’t deliver every week and is often injured. But he certainly delivered the goods last night, when it counted.

BTW, I am not as critical of Grundy as a lot of others.

Obviously painful, but these kids will be just fine. In a year or two, once all the youngsters, like Daicos, Henry, Reef, Ginni, McCreery, Kreuger, McRae, Harrison, Draper, Murley, Poulter, Ruscoe, Begg and Dean have had a couple of preseasons under their belt, I think we'll look like a very strong team.

I thought DeGoey was one of our better players as was Sidey until he cramped up.

Ironic that we are badly missing mccreery and Kreuger already!,,

Sorta. But we're young and the youngsters went missing. The leaders did their best but the number of 1 on 1s we lost in that last half was terrifying. But also, they just had numbers around the ball and we didn't.

Finally, Mcrae has to take some responsibility -- needed a different centre square setup.
I must admit I was astounded to see our two best clearance mids in Adams and Elliott both sitting next to each other on the bench halfway through the last when Geelong were absolutely caning us there. Thought we needed to have at least one of them in there at any one time.

J Cameron wins games off his own boot regularly. I can’t remember the last time Grundy was a difference maker - Round 1, 2020?

Ginnivan needs to learn to shut his mouth if he can't back up his gabbin off ..... absolute passenger tonight who has got way ahead of himself

Bit over the top, felt like boys Vs men in some segments of the game and Ginnivan wasn’t alone.
He didn’t back down and did some good things.

All in all I think this will be a good lesson for him and the group collectively.

We need to develop a killer instinct as the way games have large one way traffic in scoring the moment you take the foot off it can go sideways very fast.

Last season against the same team we kicked 1 goal in the first 3 quarters. A loss is a loss but at least I could watch this without wanting to poke my eyes out.

Very good point. We have come a long way quickly.

Whilst the 3rd qtr was a treat and we have put on some great 1st qtr performances over the past 2 seasons. I really just want to see solid 4 qtr performances. The kids are great for sure, its just the bad habits/outcomes still keep creeping in despite all the positives changes.

The opposition are always going to sense a sniff if we keep lifting the foot off the accelerator throughout a qtr or two every game.

It was a disappointing loss in terms of us going to 3-0, and that would have put us right in the frame of making the 8 this year. So really frustrating to give up a 37 point lead so meekly, but positives throughout the day, including the performance of some of the youth in our VFL team too.
It's good to have an attacking brand of footy, but we really needed to switch to plan B for that last quarter and go defensive, particularly when Geelong were starting to shift the momentum.
Big game against WC next week now, and hopefully the players can get over this loss quickly and move on. I feel this loss will hang around though a bit longer.

I’m not comparing the two, the other poster did that. I was comparing the relative pay scales. Clearly Cameron is a match winner.

Disappointing end to what was a very good performance. We were very wasteful in the first half kicking 4.11 - if we nailed some of those we would have put the match beyond the reach of Geelong by 3 qtr time.

To kick 9 in a qtr and still lose leaves me scratching my head. I think it’s indicative of a lot of young bodies tiring and some of our leaders not standing up in the last qtr.

Last night showed again we desperately need an elite KPF, and KPD to help Moore. Jeremy Cameron always kicks bags against us - he a great footballer.

Be happy to see AJ get a game next week. Liked Reef’s game last night - he needs an extended run for the next 5-6 weeks.

Ollie Henry I like a lot - needs to get better below his knees.

The Daicos boys are going to provide a lot of highlights over the next decade.

We honestly looked like we just ran out of gas I think we need the other big key defender and yes we should have won but it wasn't lack of effort maybe lack of composure but that will come and we're a hell of alot closer to a premiership then the cats

Our downfall actuallt began at the end of the 3rd. Esava gets injured in the ruck contested when we are up 37.

We win the Center clearance. We look like we are going forward to score but silly handball turnover which leads to a goal for the cats.

We lose the very next Center bounce too. We lose the Center bounces 6 - 2 in the last quarter.
