So Is there going to be a middle ground with this game plan? I mean there’s got to be a way to slow opposition momentum while still having defensive structure.

Unfortunately we were too wasteful with our opportunities. However, there is clearly a lot to work with and I’m excited to see how far this group can go. It’s disappointing but I’m backing them in to learn a lot from this game and to be better for it.

Some thoughts...

The brand is great.

The intensity is great.

The effort is great.

The fumbles, the silly skill errors, and the terrible finishing - not so great. But we're a team in transition. We have things to work on.
Sucks to lose, but we're growing as a group and we forced some damn good football (and a healthy dose of luck) out of the premiership favourites.

The game was defined by almost-moments. Ollie Henry spills an uncontested mark inside 50 in the first, the ball goes down the other end for a goal. 12 point turnaround. Adams takes the advantage and misses, they score from the kickin - 12 point turnaround. Grundy wins the ball in the centre clearance but misses his boot with the attempted kick; Crisp goes for one too many handpasses when we're out in the last; Pendles handpasses out of the centre clearance instead of kicking long and we turn it over... all massive momentum shift moments.

We could have - and probably should have - won. The challenge now will be learning and growing from this, and not repeating the same mistakes week on week.

We remain paper thin in contested mids, so when Adams and JDG got beaten late, we got split wide open. The defence looked poor in the last, but the ball was coming in absolutely pressure-free. This won't be the last time this happens, until we bring in more elite midfield quality.

But it was really pleasing to see the whole midfield group stand up and dominate their opponents for so long. To be honest, I didn't think our mids would stack up at all this season. I thought we'd get routinely beaten in the guts by most sides. But they took it to a full strength Geelong contingent for the majority of the game - super encouraging to see.

Isaac Quaynor announced himself tonight, his intercept game was clean, creative, brilliant. I'm constantly impressed by his marking. He'll be one of our very best for a decade or more.

Darcy Cameron played a great quarter and was invisible for the other three. I'm not sure there's much difference between him and Cox - and I'd start Kreuger over both.

I'm so worried for Grundy. His best form is three years behind him. He's been breaking even with journeymen like Rhys Stanley, Andrew Phillips and Shane Mumford for 50 games now. He's become a good honest ruckman. And you can't pay those sorts $1mill per year and hope to remain relevant.

This group has the talent to make an impact over the next few years, but whether or not we can genuinely contend will depend oh so much on whether Grundy can become the best ruck in the AFL again, or whether the club can offload his salary and reinvest in some genuinely elite KPF talent.

Jez Cameron is getting paid less, and Geelong had to pay overs to get him out.

This club exists to give other clubs their greatest victories.
Correct. Can somebody who was tasked with job of playing on Jeremy Cameron? Finally, tonight's result shows why we need to recruit 2 key forwards. I am certain tonight that if we had an elite FULL-FORWARD and/or CENTRE HALF-FORWARD, we win the game. The latter is our ACHILLES HEEL! Goodnight & good luck.

I thought Howe spent a lot of time on Cameron. Madgen was there too. My question is why Moore wasn't used against him. Moore's our best defender, so why was he not switched?
I can't remember a centre clearance in the last and subsequently, our back six were under enormous pressure. We needed to slow it down after the first two goals, but we just couldn't get our hands on it. Still, the projection is good.

Big likes tonight:
Reef's debut
Nick's best game
Pendles' vision
Quaynor's first half

Disappointments:
WHE
Ginnivan
Noble
Maynard
Moore

As much as I hate to say it, going into 3QTR time with a 30 point lead, we needed to switch to the Buckley-era defensive lockdown game style to kill the momentum in the game. Only problem is we may have lacked the match fitness to execute it.

It's still a commendable effort from a young side with a new coach, just need to learn how to stem the bleeding.

Sorta. But we're young and the youngsters went missing. The leaders did their best but the number of 1 on 1s we lost in that last half was terrifying. But also, they just had numbers around the ball and we didn't.

Finally, Mcrae has to take some responsibility -- needed a different centre square setup.

Would really love someone to start tracking umpires and how they treat the pies in the frees against and for count. Simon Meredith is an absolute disgrace.
Will never happen because it's been happening since forever - the AFL simply can't NOT be aware of it so that leaves us only one conclusion to draw doesn't it?

Ginnivan needs to learn to shut his mouth if he can't back up his gabbin off ..... absolute passenger tonight who has got way ahead of himself

At this stage he lacks a physical element to his game and he is only mediocre-paced… so there are things he can work on like many of our boys.

We dominated that game and really should have closed it out a lot earlier
But when you leave goals on the table…a team that’s proven like Geelong can waltz right through the door just as quickly and made us pay for our own mistakes for leaving the door ajar.

Overall though on evidence to date..the improvements have been there.
More inside 50s
More contested ball and clearance wins
More scoring
Things we were promised have been delivered albeit on a small early sample size.

Let’s see what some of these younger players are made of next week when they have all week to have this sinking feeling to get over and then have to erase it and go again and atone
Coaching staff included
