Autopsy Round 4, 2023: St.Kilda v Gold Coast

I'm still a bit haunted by what Melbourne did to us in the preseason. I'm looking forward to seeing us play against Pies, Swans, Dees, Brissy, Carlton types.

Sydney play a similar very system driven team game and made it to a GF last year with a pile of hard working kids. I can see us being able to match that sort of performance if everything falls into place. Hopefully it's a year with no stand out side and we can Bulldogs Bradbury it.
If we were fully fit.

The Dees scare me. Mids too good.

Sydney. Good team. Great system.

The others you listed. I think we could go toe to toe.

just shows how good this kid is going to be - he was named best on ground by a few football commentators today - so how good is he going to be - frightening for other teams.
Yes he was fantastic!

Early prediction - he will get that nut case Maynard next game who will be right into him.

I’m sure RTB will prepare him & the team need to be prepared to support him if required. Part of his education & he will work his way through it.

No really my god
Imagine when he has played 50 to 60 games
He is made for the MCG in September

I'm so burnt by disappointment that I don't want to get too excited but every week he goes up a level. He's making it very hard to stay contained.

The suns early showed the comp how to beat it- you need to pass the ball lightning quick and practically flawlessly up the field before we get a chance to set up our zone.

Suns weren't good enough to sustain it- but they definately cracked us open (early stages) more than any other team so far
Touk Miller is a star , some teams last year had no answer to him so the double teamed him - he is one of the few midfielders who can get the hard ball as well as the elite speed to tear you apart on the outside - look at Neale , Tom Mitchell teams didn't even worry about tagging them - tonight he had 16 contested possessions out of 32 and his defensive efforts are not recognized by a lot of people - just look at that diving spoil saving a goal , so for us to quell his effectiveness was pretty good / he had a great game but it could of been more damaging.
If Miller was playing for a good team he would already have a Brownlow - however like Basket ball - if your team mate's don't finish off your work you don't get the assist.

Oliver is a contested beast and is just about the best in the game , but he has not got that break away speed as Miller and few have that can always win the hardball.

Our midfield is basically the blue collar hard workers with Steele , Crouch and Ross - but throwing Sinclair into the middle to me smoked the game with the efforts and hard work from Crouch , Ross and Clark.

Having Windhager - who has not been left to play a free running role yet will surprise everyone when he is allowed to - he is just doing the graft at the moment and having Owens in there , plus Pou is just mind blowing how good we could be.

From about half way through the game against Essendon you could see Stocker change through his gears. Something clicked. He'd been solid and dour before that, but he hit another vibe in that game. He is looking like a very astute pick up.

I think you're right. It's the ability to gear change that sets him apart. Wood and Stocker set the tone in the last quarter last week. Stocker really put the foot down a few times again tonight and made a huge impact, mostly when we needed a boost. Could be a very good find.

The head is sancrocent now and apologies for my spelling. In your opion does McKay deserve a week?

It’s a legal minefield now and more to come

I doubt Maynard actual knows how hard the kid attacks the football as a forward - he is going to be surprised - not many forwards win 19 contested possessions and with added confidence - Maynard is need to be at the top of game , but whatever happens Owens will be giving it.

Stoked that I live in SA and have tickets to the Gather Round next weekend. I’ll get to see Owens in the flesh

The only downside to tongiht was Bytel getting injured and the travesty that is Paddy McCartin. It’s honestly a disgrace the AFL let him continue his career after what he suffered with us.

It’s fair to say that the Collingwood v St Kilda match should be a sell-out.

What a game that should be. Match of the season.

If we win that then we are a fair dinkum contender. Tonight convinced me that something amazing is happening with this team, and that they believe it as well.

Stocker has been a very good pick
Really fitting in well in the back 6
Couldn’t agree more, but I’m gonna put my hand up and say that I need someone to explain to me what his role actually is?

Is he a lock down defender? An interceptor? Rebound of the HBF? Jack of all trades? I think he’s doing a terrific job but I haven’t been able to put my finger on it yet, who competes for his spot, Coffield? Highmore?

Regardless, love his grunt. Heart and soul player already, sticks up for his team mates without a second thought. 26 disposals, 7 marks. Many ticks of approval.

We didn't play anything like this system when we played melbourne.

Nothing like it.
