I think that's how we got Michael Gardner. We ended up with pick 1 in 1996 despite playing finals throughout the 90s.

Even more confusing is how we got pick 1 for Drew Banfield in early 90s.

Banfield: we traded Scott Watters and Tony Begovich to Sydney for pick 1. Absolute highway robbery.

Gardiner: Port, who were coming in that season, could sign a number of uncontracted players, but the teams that lost those players got compensation picks at the start of the draft (and then another pick at the start of the second round), in reverse ladder order.

We agreed to trade Bond and Brayden Lyle to Port for a late pick, in return they agreed to sign Ian Downsborough as an uncontracted player AND not to sign a player from a team that finished lower than us, resulting in us getting pick 1. We also got pick 24 which we used on the great Josh Wooden.
