Autopsy Round 8, 2024: Positives and Negatives vs Essendon

Not sure about this.

Pre-season it was touch and go between Waterman and Maric. Waterman put in a couple of good pre-season games and got his spot and clearly will keep it.

Darling is finding form, has been better in the last month, and on form is still in front of Maric.

When Oscar and Flynn come back it will be interesting.

Flynn, Oscar, Snake are three locks then it’s between JWilliams/BWilliams for 2nd ruck, and we may decide to go tall and it’s one of J/Williams/BWilliams/Darling/Maric.

Of that last group Darling is still ahead of Maric, and right here right now so it JWilliams.

Could see us going with Flynn in the ruck, JWilliams as fwd/ruck then Oscar, Snake and maybe Darling in that last spot.

B Williams and Maric are stiff to miss out but tall forwards is probably our most competitive area.
Darling and Maric play very different roles.

If Allen and Waterman are the two key talls then there absolutely is no place for Darling. Maric is much more versatile and useful in the 3rd tall role.

Maric and Culley in to bolster the fwd setup.
Brockman back in for Long
Hall to Debut for Yeo
Sheed can get out and Ryan can be sub.
Culley in is gross. Forget it and play Johnston

Did anyone watch Johnston during warmups. Guy is very 2 footed which is a fantastic sign. Had great technique on both sides of the body. I think chuck him into the 22 next week. He simply cannot do worse then Edwards.

I think there’s something about development I read earlier this year.

Players don’t truly really develop until they get exposed to games like this. The close games when the heat goes on and the intensity increases and you have to perform under pressure. Games where you aren’t in it in the closing stages don’t have the same effect.

Yesterday we lost. We will likely lose a few more this year. But id say that’s the sort of game that’s worth more for development than 20 mindless games of 40+ point losses where the intensity is gone at half time.

In the end, they had a bit extra class when it mattered. But some excellent signs from our boys, troubling injuries aside.

It was a push in the chest, Martin flopped and the over officious maggot fell for it.

Doesnt matter. There is no need for that grandstanding crap when you've got a forward taking a shot on goal. Do it AFTER Waterman slots it.

Cripps is an A-grade sucker who fell headfirst into an obvious trap, and it arguably cost the side a chance at the win. It needs to be addressed internally.

Yes but two things can be right at the same time. Cripps shouldn't have done it and the umpire shouldn't have rewarded the flopping scum player.

I agree with the majority of what you say, but fans are more likely to forgive a skill error than an undisciplined one like that.
I know.

But coaching staff are more likely to be concerned at skill errors.

How many goals has Cripps getting aggro cost us verse say, Whitherdon taking on more than he is up to with a kick?

It's why fans want Cripps dropped verse why he will not be.

So if Cripps hadn’t touched Martin at all would the umpire have paid Essendon a free kick??

If your answer is no it’s obvious who is at fault.

It was just a push in the chest, Martin flopped and the over officious maggot just had to insert himself at a pivotal moment. Cripps was stupid too.

Just to put to bed this notion that Cripps didn't do anything wrong and the umps are at fault, here is the vision.
The Essendon player was doing nothing, Cripps walks up to him and just starts it all.
Sure the oppo player put mayo on it, but it's 100% on Crippa. Just Stupidity.

But there were plenty of other brain fades that cost us the game too.

Cripps error was egregious, but it had no more impact than a dozen others.

The closer a game is, and the closer it is to the end, the more weight fans put on mistakes.

Shallow proximal cause thinking that coaching staff cannot afford.

Cripps will cop his wack for a dumb act, but the club will not blame him for the loss any more than any other error.

I suspect they will be more concerned with mistakes like positioning poorly, lack of effort, failure to follow the game plan etc, that in many cases most fans wouldn't even notice, than one off brain fades.

Not sure why were mentioning other brain fades, when this is the one that was due to an undiscipline act. As a senior player he should know a lot better. Poor skill execution is a completely different discussion.

never said he was to blame for the loss or that he should be dropped. Just that his act was significant in the context of the game. You can pretend it wasn't, but it was.

Gee it's deflating to be an Eagles fan these days isn't it.

Finally look like we are past the hell that has been the past few years and then this happens.

Reid looking like a gun -> rested then doesn't look the same player then injures himself
Yeo looking like the bull he used to be -> groin injury which is the worst case scenario for him
Waterman looking like he has arrived -> concussed and hamstring
Long working into some good form -> knee exploded

But don't worry everyone, Sheed is still out there! And Ryan!

This may hurt some feelings but we cant play Ryan in the WAFl. The team is too atrocious for a guy like Ryan to get into form or well do anything good. He is just gonna sit up forward, watching the other team kick goal after goal.

Now we can sit here and bitch and moan about Ryans form and needing to find it in the WAFL, but our system sucks so bad, it doesnt actually give us this as a option

For now all we can do is leave Ryan up forward til gets his groove back. Its the only place he will be able to achieve this. Its not his fault either so lets not I guess berate him for our horrible system
I agree to an extent.

Gaff will return to alleviate the pressure

Culley in is gross.

Watched the replay this morning, I feel like our biggest deficiency on the ground right now is from our small forwards - they're either not scoring or not pressuring well enough. Defence is working very well all things considered, midfield is doing well enough, tall forwards doing as much as they can. Need more from the small forwards to lock that ball in there and contribute to the scoreboard.
