Prediction Round 8: Changes Vs Hawks + prematch discussion

Well considering after 25 years of existence we had beaten Hawthorn just 8 times.

We have won the last 4 games since Longmuir took over and the hawks are the only team he hasn't lost too.

So hopefully we win as we owe still them another 20 years of punishment.
We have beaten them more than 8 times.

I would like to see Fyfe straight back in if fit. Sub him out when he starts flagging.

Rather that than see him start as sub and come on when we are 4 goals down in Q3.

I just need to put this here....

I don't mind the dockers struggling with lack of game experience.

But yeah... Ranked 18th in game experience on the backline sucked.

Average games per defender is 70 games.

Would Nathan Wilson on the back 50 help?

Has to be Barlow doesnt it?

in terms of players I was most excited for on potential after 20 odd games it would currently have to be:
- Fyfe, Amiss, Johnson (though both need to get to 20 game qualifier obviously), Serong, Cerra, Brayshaw off the top of my head

Only 13.5 games until

You have to question why we have this lack of experience in the 7th year of a rebuild?

Maybe trading out 2 x 100 gamers and another who was close to it at the end of last season has something to do with it. Plus the experience lost in previous years with the departure of Hill, Langdon, Neale, Hogan, etc.

All true, but also because the early part of the rebuild was buggered up

Well when you think about it..

After that 2012-15 finals period was done, that squad was an ageing squad.

As I said, look at the 2022 Elim finals win. Only 31 year old Michael Walters and 37 year old David Mundy. 18 or 19 of those blokes that played in that finals win had their 1st ever finals win In their career.

7 of them were aged 21 or under.

Come to think of it David Mundy is the only bloke from our 2006 and 2010 sides that won a final.

Then you look at the back 6 in 2012-15. Duffield and McPharlin were retired in 2015. Zac Dawson and Ibbotson retired in 2017. Then finally Lee spurr and Michael Johnson were gone in 2018.

It’s a byproduct of our poor drafting 2011-2015 tbh. Didn’t develop enough quality long term players in that time and the ones we did left (Langdon, Weller, Neale). The guys we picked at the start of our rebuild in 2016 are on around 80-100 games. Just no one good or experienced above that. Doesn’t help that guys like Fyfe/tabs are always injured. And anyone we did have (Lobb, acres, hogan, hill) were traded in

I call it equalisation to be Honest.

We made finals in 2010-15. And he one year we didn't make finals was In 2011.

In 2011, we finished 13th. That should be pick 6. But that season was like pushed back to pick 12-14 because of GWS

It’s why long term rebuilds when players have lots of freedom of movement are dumb.

You need to use every avenue at your disposal to get good fast and stay there. Otherwise players will just move on to where they perceive they can have more success.

I think people were giddy about Barlow after his first preseason match against Melbourne. He was exactly what we needed at the right time. Don't think there's ever been a bigger and more immediate catalyst for improvement at Freo.

Nope

Mods turned us from a complete debacle into the laughing stock we are today

We tried that too, it didn't work

Hogan, hill, Wilson, Conca, lobb

The two talls either end of the ground spent considerable time injured too. The rucks and mids are arguably ahead of schedule but lack the senior bodies around them.

We traded in a half back who couldn't get a game at Geelong and a mid who couldn't get a game at GC.

Switta has been injured a lot.
O'Driscoll for about 40% of his career, injured.
Amiss for half of his.
