Prediction Round 8: Changes Vs Hawks + prematch discussion

Well considering after 25 years of existence we had beaten Hawthorn just 8 times.

We have won the last 4 games since Longmuir took over and the hawks are the only team he hasn't lost too.

So hopefully we win as we owe still them another 20 years of punishment.
A very crazy stat. Beaten them only 8 times in 25 years.

I’m preparing to lose any remaining interest in this season tomorrow when Sturt is dropped while Banfield & Hughes keep their places & we don’t reward Treacy & Wilson for excellence WAFL form.

This.

Sturt needs to be kept in the side, needs the opportunity to string a few games together.

He just goes missing though. Maybe 1 more.
Whilst this is broadly true, have a look at his time on ground figures. Barely more than 50% in the last game, created 2 shots on goal and was dragged for Erasmus. I'm not saying he's a guaranteed star just that he doesn't need many touches to create scoreboard impact and if it clicks for him he could be 3-4 goal/game forward that plays smart.

I just don't understand why he seems to held in such low regard by JL when we're screaming out for players who can make a difference at the moment but then I have no access to inside knowledge so who knows, its just my pet bugbear. Or one of them ;)

There was talk he’d been assured a good run at it - then subbed the next game.
Have we ever had a Treacy, Amiss and Sturt forward line? Just once I’d like to see this happen !
I’m also keen to see if Corbett can out perform Hughes on the wing. Was an elite runner at GC, a good size with sticky hands, worth a shot I reckon.
Waiting till 4pm today to see 🤞 also waiting till 6pm for Powerball, think that’s more realistic to be honest!!🤣

It's impossible not to go missing in that role but all we want from it is 10-15 touches of quality and some decent pressure. I think Sturt is either directly having or creating 2-4 shots on goal a game. These are the key comparisons between the two

They are providing similar at the moment on numbers that matter for their spot, though I'd prefer Sturt's number on pure numbers alone. Importantly, despite touching it less, he provides as much or more offensive impact than Banfield does because most of Banfields touches are meangingless at best and negative at worst. I think pressure acts are as much an indication of work rate as anything but the massive difference between the two is we know after like 80 games, we are not getting more than this from Banfield, this is who he is. There is some hope Sturt can grow and give more

He just goes missing though. Maybe 1 more.

Players in his position always go missing. It comes with the territory. And compounded by our woeful ball movement and forward structure.

He has played only 7 games in his entire career. Even Amiss has played more, and nobody is calling for him to get dropped because he goes missing.

Sturt should be given every single game of the season to see what he can deliver. While playing alongside at least 2 taller targets (not 1 like he does currently, with JL refusing to put Jackson, Amiss and Sturt in the forward line at the same time). Doubt it will happen though.

Mitchell must really want Reid. Fair enough. We'll (hopefully) be happy to assist so WC don't get him.
Not really, half our board wanted CJ dropped anyway. Breust has been struggling in patches as well, last week looked well off the pace after half time

I want to see us mix up the midfield rotation lot more, I’d bring in Treacy for Banfield and play Jackson in the middle/wing more often, Erasmus comes in for Johnson, give Frederick another week to recover. Rotate all of Switter, Erasmus and JOM through half forward and midfield.
I actually thought Hughes played better as a defender than a wing last week but I think we need extra height in the backline which we haven’t had since Chapman went out, so Hughes out for Hamling or Draper.
In: Treacy, Erasmus, Hamling
Out: Banfield, Johnson, Hughes

Sturt also has pace to burn, is a longer more reliable kick for goal.
On talent alone no other team would have Banfield ahead of Sturt.

Sorry I beg to differ 🙂

The part where you say his touches are meaningless. Off the top of my head from the last game he was involved in two that resulted in goals or should have. The tap in the goal square and the quick handball around the 50 metre arc. Also few kicks that hit the forward in other games

Seen him run into the defensive half and middle which Sturt doesn't.

I get it. You and majority prefer Sturt with his youth, future prospect and X factor. But comparing the two now only on performance to say Sturt has been much better is bit of an embellishment

Breust already has 3x 3 goal games this season

That's phenomenal for a small forward in a bottom 4 team

They are both below average in everything just about. Ideally you wouldn't play either if both were on 50 games. Only one is.

Okay. But that response outside everything else is about impacting games as it is. Not what could be but what is
